About METAdrasiMETAdrasi is a Greek NGO founded in 2010 with the main aim of facilitating the reception and integration of refugees, migrants and unaccompanied children in Greece. Our main aim is to fill crucial gaps in areas not covered, or covered only to a limited extent, by the public authorities or other NGOs, through innovative interventions.

METAdrasi is headed by Lora Pappa, co-founder, who has 20 years’ experience in human rights, migration and refugee issues. In 2016, Ms Pappa was awarded the Council of Europe’s North-South Prize for the protection of human rights.

Since 2010, METAdrasi has been operating as an implementing partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Determined to uphold and protect fundamental human rights through its contribution, it helps to restore the dignity of those in need and offers essential support services to alleviate the plight of all those displaced.

Over the past two years, with the entrapment of refugee population in Greece, METAdrasi scaled up its activities significantly. This was embraced and supported by the UNHCR, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), International Rescue Committee (IRC), numerous Embassies in Greece, the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), as well as a significant number of private donors and Greek and foreign foundations.

METADRASI’S PRESENCE THROUGHOUT GREECE

Refers to the period from 12/2011 to 12/2018

METAdrasi’s four main axes of activity: The training of interpreters and provision of interpretation services in over 43 languages and dialects, to enable vital communication with refugees and migrants.

The protection of unaccompanied children through a comprehensive safety net of activities including transit accommodation facilities, their safe escorting from border locations to permanent accommodation facilities and the pioneering activities of guardianship, foster families and supported independent living for unaccompanied minors.

The protection of vulnerable groups through the provision of legal aid to asylum-seekers, identification and certification of victims of torture and humanitarian aid material collection and distribution.

The education and integration of refugees and migrants by offering a tailored educational program for children, Greek language lessons and work placement opportunities for adults and by developing innovative educational material for teaching or learning Greek as a foreign language.

To continue providing its core services on an uninterrupted basis, especially in light of the persisting gaps, the phase out of international organizations and international NGOs and other actors, and to expand into related areas concerning the education and integration of refugees, METAdrasi is now seeking to broaden its funding sources and to develop a sustainable basis of institutional and charitable funding.

Guiding principles: consistency, efficiency and the flexibility to adjust to needs as they emerge

«In November 2015, a 2 year old boy from Syria was found alone in the Evros region, near the Northern borders of Greece. Our escorting team set out immediately to escort the boy to a suitable children’s accommodation facility.

It was not the first time that a child was found alone in Greece, near the borders. And there are so many more that are not detected or found ...

Another day, we were notified of a 4 year old Syrian child, who was traveling with someone who claimed to be his father. It was revealed that he was a trafficker of Romanian origin.

We accompanied the child safely to the unaccompanied minors‘ accommodation facility in Alexandroupolis. During the journey, the child was attached so much to me, that it was impossible for us to say goodbye and be separated. So, I spent the night by his bed, until he started getting adapted to his new environment. This experience shocked me.

«Two little siblings from Syria, aged 4 and 9, found themselves alone in Lesvos.

As soon as they were identified at Skala Sykamias, a member of METAdrasi’s Guardianship Network for Unaccompanied Minors took urgent action and managed to cooperate effectively with authorities and quickly initiate all necessary procedures for their protection. As a result, the children were transfred directly to the Transit Accommodation Facility of METAdrasi, without having to spend a minute in the First Reception Center of Moria. They were taken care of by the facility’s staff and soon felt at home.

Being the youngest kids, they attracted the attention and special treatment of all the other children in the shelter!

Fortunately, their mother was soon located, and a few days later, the family was reunited and they were able to continue their journey together.

« Sami arrived in our country alone, about a year ago, seeking for shelter and safety, leaving behind conflicts, violence and the loss of people he loved. METAdrasi has been standing by Sami from the very beginning, through the Guardianship Network for Unaccompanied Minors and the Accommodation Facility in Chios. Thanks to the Semi-Independent Living Activity initiative, Sami now lives in an apartment in Athens, where he has his own room, he goes to school and feels that he can realize his dreams and plans.

Despoina, the member of METAdrasi’s Guardianship Network that has undertaken his support, recounts: “Sami is a studious and consistent teenager. From the first day I met him, I was impressed by his politeness and the fact that he is always smiling, despite the difficulties he had to face from a tender age. He is very happy to have his own space and study area. His aspiration to complete his school studies, which was impossible in his home country, is now feasible and he works very hard in this direction. I was moved to hear that his school community embraced him from the first day, even more when the Parents and Guardians Association initiated efforts to cover his school fees”.

« ...I want to say that I'm happy to be in Greece. I'm happy to live with you, because you're all very kind to all of us... I want to thank all my teachers. Each one individually. The Maths teacher, the Greek language teacher, the English language teacher, the Computers Science teacher and the Gym teacher. Because they tried so hard so that I could learn how to read and write. I want to thank all my classmates for walking this road with me. I'm happy because, although I le my country, I found here a country that embraced me so warmly, that oen I would forget how much I miss my family and especially my mother. I will never forget this country and its people, because they gave me precious knowledge for the rest of my life.
