Students Step Back in Time During Canal Days
A 28-year tradition continued along the Oswego River this schoolyear as fourth-graders participated in Canal Days.
The annual event brought students, school offi cials, politicians and local dignitaries together for a step back in time. All seven fourth-grade classes at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School werepropelled back into the 1800s and early 1900s to experience lifeduring that era in local history.
“This goes along well with what the students are learning inclass,” said event organizer Glenda Stanbridge. “There is always agreat turnout and a lot of parents who came to Canal Days whenthey were in school are coming back with their own kids today.”
Hundreds of students and chaperones walked along Canal Park, where they were greeted by local historians who offered lessons oneverything from making candles to cleaning horseshoes. Studentsexplored hand stitching, early 1900s games, antique fi re equipment, and, of course, the canal system.
