Review for Mastery Circles and Circumference

A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are the same distance from a given point, called the center. A line segment with an endpoint at the center and an endpoint on the circle is called the radius r. A line segment with both endpoints on the circle is called a chord. A line segment with both endpoints on the circle, and which also passes through the center is called the diameter d. The length of the diameter is twice the radius.

This is circle P.

PQ and PR are radii. QR and ST are chords.

QR is a diameter.

Identify each part of the circle. 1. center _________________ 4. chord _________________ 2. diameter _________________ 3. two radii _________________

The distance around a circle is called the circumference. The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is always the same. This relationship is called pi and is represented by the Greek letter π.

Pi is a decimal number that has no end and never repeats. 3.14, or 227

,

is used to estimate pi.

To find the circumference C of a circle, use a formula.

C = πd ≈ 3.14 • 6 ≈ 18.84 The circumference is about 18.84 units.

Find the circumference. Use 3.14 for π. 5.

Challenge Cheesy Pies

Have you ever seen strips of cheese placed around the edge of an apple pie? I am sure you will agree that “cheesy pies” sound very tasty indeed.

Find the circumference of each pie. Use 3.14 for π. Then find the total length in inches of the cheese strips in each box. Imagine placing the strips around the circumference of the pies. Which box of cheese strips would be best to buy for each pie? Draw a line from the pie to the appropriate box of cheese strips. 1.

Reading Strategies Focus on Vocabulary

A circle is a closed curve with all points on the figure the same distance from a center point. The radius of a circle is a line segment connecting the center of the circle to a point on the circle. A chord of a circle is a line segment with both endpoints on the circle. The diameter of a circle is a line segment that passes through the center of the circle and connects two points on the circle. The diameter is twice the length of a radius. The circumference is the distance around a circle.

Use the pictures and definitions to name the figure described in each exercise. Write “circle,” “center,” “radius,” “chord,” “diameter” or “circumference.” 1. All the points on a circle are equidistant from this point. ___________________
