Articles Member of the Month: Colleen MacDonald By: Courtney Slack As Reported on: Pitt PBL.org Congratulations to Colleen MacDonald, for being recognized as PBL’s first Member of the Month for the

2013 school year! As Recruitment Chair, Colleen has been the driving force behind the entrance of 26 new,

excellent members! This was certainly not an easy task; after applying and being selected for her

Recruitment Chair position this summer, she dove head first into her duties. Through planning each night of

recruitment week, coordinating tabling schedules, attending any activities fairs, speaking in CBA

classrooms, posting flyers, managing promotional materials, and of course, making sure each recruitment

event ran smoothly and efficiently, Colleen was able to draw in over 70 hopeful interviewees. Colleen is a

senior marketing major with an economics minor, as well as a Certificate in Leadership and Ethics, and has

been a member of our organization since the fall of her freshman year. Throughout her time here with Phi

Beta Lambda, Colleen has held positions as a member of the Berg Cup Planning Team, as well as the

Charity Poker Tournament Chair. Outside of PBL, she held two internships this summer, studied abroad in

Italy, and is currently participating in a consulting project for Sara Heinz House. Because of her hard work

and dedication to the organization, PBL has had one of its most successful recruitment weeks to date, and

Colleen herself agrees, “I was very impressed with the caliber of students that came out for PBL this

semester and have extremely high hopes that all of the new members will develop as individuals within

PBL, as well as continue to help grow our organization to the best it can be.” Thank you to Colleen for an

amazing recruitment week – it was certainly a success!

Recruitment in Raving Reviews By: Casey Pacifico and Allison Dobos As Reported on: Pitt PBL.org

As the lights came back on in the College of Business Administration for the first time since the Spring semester, all of the ABSO organizations prepared for their Fall recruitment activities. One of these organizations was, of course, Phi Beta Lambda. With selected recruitment chair Colleen MacDonald readily planning the week of September 3-7 to spread the word about its desire to accept some outstanding new members. The first night of recruitment went extremely well. The event, known as the Information Session, took place in the Cathedral of Learning, an unusual spot for a PBL event. With over 70 interested students in attendance, you could feel the energy and excitement from all who were present. As Brad Mayer, Matt Michaels, and Frany Tish spoke about their experiences within the organization, the interest just grew and grew. Almost everything about that evening made the current members proud of their organization and the potential members eager to learn more. The following two nights consisted of Meet the Members and Resume Workshop. The potential recruits and the members continued to become better acquainted and asked each other a variety of questions. Whether one argued if they were a Pens or Flyers fan or laughed at the hilarious skit about Alina Crisi’s character, Stella, and her ‘professionalism’, there was plenty to talk about. Finally, the last event before the Interviews on Sunday was Game Night. With plenty of Rita’s to go around, the room broke up into teams to compete against each other at PBL’s first ever attempt at Headbands; a game where only yes or no questions were accepted and the two teams raced to be the first to guess the given noun. As Saturday arrived, the Leadership Team worked diligently to select their ideal members among the 71 individuals who interviewed. With all recruits dressed professionally and hopeful in their quest to secure a spot in the organization, the decision was not easy to make. LT member, Olivia Domachowski, said, “We were so impressed with the quality of all 71 individuals who came out to interviews, and we sincerely congratulate all the new Fall semester members.” With that said, the recruitment experience was one all enjoyed despite the hard work and effort that was put into every small detail. From all of us at PBL, we welcome the 26 new members to our organization. May you learn, grow, and achieve as many successes as possible at Pitt and beyond.

FBLA-PBL Collaboration FBLA-PBL Mini Conference, 2013 On March 22, 2013, The University of Pittsburgh’s Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda held the 5th annual FBLA Mini-

Conference. The conference was help on Pitt’s campus in both Sennott Square and Mervis Hall and welcomed over

80 delegates and advisors from around the Pittsburgh Region. Students attended multiple different workshops

throughout the day where current business issues were tackled by current Phi Beta Lambda members and corporate

officials. PBL upperclassmen were able to share their experiences and tips with these students to help them achieve

in their futures. The event ended with a very nice luncheon that was enjoyed by all in attendance!
