Terms 2 and 3 2019 Johnsonville School Board of Trustees Newsletter 27 September 2019 Kia ora koutou As we bid the 2019 winter adieu, we welcome spring, new life, more sunshine hours, and warmth...and brace for the windiest season of the year! New student enrolments We have 27 newly enrolled children at Johnsonville School in Term 3, bringing our roll to 378. The Board warmly welcomes them and their whānau to our school community. We envisage a school roll of 400 by the end of the school year. New staff & appreciation We welcomed our new Deputy Principal, Simon Flockton, at the beginning of Term 2. We also welcomed teachers Melissa Brooke (to our Special Education Unit) and John Cormack (to Room 1, Years 5 and 6) in Term 3. The Board thanks all staff for the excellent work they have done in Terms 2 and 3. Our school charter: aims, purposes, and objectives The Board has commenced a process of reviewing and refreshing the school’s Charter (hyperlinked). Throughout Term 4 this year, we will engage with you, the school community, on updating the Charter. To start with, we have come up with 3 questions that we would like to hear from you on: •What do you love about our school? •Is there anything you don’t like about our school? •If you could change one thing at our school to make it better, what would that be? If you have any comments about, or responses to, the questions that you’d like to share with the Board, please email: [email protected]

BOT Elections—new and outgoing trustees The Board of Trustees election was held in June, and the new Board took office on 14 June. We have welcomed 2 new parent representatives on the Board: Suhel Mangera and Helen Wharehinga. During its first meeting on 19 June, the new Board unanimously reappointed— •Lucy Saunders as the Board’s Chairperson; and •Anshuman Chakraborty as the Board’s Deputy Chairperson. The Board thanks the outgoing parent representatives on the Board, Nick Urlich and Paul Dudfield, for all of their contributions to the Board.

ERO Report Representatives from the Education Review Office (ERO) visited our school during Term 2 in the course of their standard periodic review of all education providers in New Zealand. The purpose of ERO’s evaluation is to give parents, whānau, and the wider school community assurance about the quality of education children receive at our school. ERO looked at the quality and effectiveness of the school’s processes and practices for continuing and sustaining improvement. ERO has acknowledged the good work done at school and has suggested actions for sustained improvement and future learner success. The Board thanks the staff and everyone who engaged with ERO representatives before, during, and after their visits to our school, resulting in a positive and an encouraging external evaluation report. We encourage you to read their report, available at the ERO website (hyperlinked). New classrooms project We were very excited by the Ministry of Education’s announcement last year that we will receive funding for—

•4 new classrooms to reflect our roll growth forecast; and •3 new classrooms to replace Rooms 13, 14, and 15, as they approach the end of their useful lives.

Further details regarding the timeline and logistics will be communicated to parents and caregivers of students as we know more. The staff and Board are working on an Education Brief to guide the project, and the Ministry of Education is in the process of appointing an architect to design the new classrooms.

2019 Raffle The Home and School Association organised a raffle to raise funds for upgrading the school hall. The raffle was drawn on 22 August. The Board extends its thanks to— •the Home and School Association, led by Annouschka Martinsen, for organising this fund-raising initiative and for raising $10,000 from the sale of raffle tickets; and •the businesses and individuals, local and further afield, who generously donated or sponsored the attractive array of prizes for the raffle; and •the parents, whānau, and people in the local and wider community for participating in the raffle by selling and purchasing raffle tickets. The names of the 10 prize winners of the raffle draw are posted at the Johnsonville School website (hyperlinked). Please feel free to contact any of the Board members in person to discuss issues related to school governance.
