^&&^CS'~J^<>**Z^>£s Do-It-Yourself Fluoridation
Cities considering the question of fluoridating their water supply almost without exception run into opposition. Vociferous anti-fluorine groups raise their voices to the high heavens, condemning the idea as forced medication and a danger to the public health. Still, in towns that vote down fluoridation, there usually remains a sizable group which wants fluoridated water.
Well, if the latter group is willing to pay for it, it can get just what it wants. A fluoridation unit, invented by a group of Canadians for home use, is designed to serve the have-nots. The unit connects to the home's water system just back of the tap . It consists of a small, 6-inch-high canister that contains a polyethylene bag that holds 310 cc. of 2 % sodium fluoride solution.
The system diverts some water through the canister, forces fluoride in the bag to enter the main stream of water. Amount of fluoride can be regulated to meet specific needs. The Canadians who developed the device say it's expected to cost $130 to install.
How About α Beer The birth of the "barn" (C&EN, May
19, page 90) recalls to Frederick C. Strong, III , his efforts to establish a name for the unit of measurement of a compound's molar absorptivity.
If Strong, associate professor of chemistry at Stevens Institute of Tech
nology, had his way, the unit would be called a "beer" to honor the originator of Beer's Law: The intensity of an emergent ray of light is inversely proportional to the concentration of the solution and the depth of liquid through which i t travels; hence, the absorption depends on the number of molecules present.
Strong first suggested the name "in spite of the danger of making English-speaking spectroscopists a perpetually thirsty species . . ." in a paper he gave at the 1952 meeting of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
So far, though, his idea isn't getting across. Says Strong, "As yet, my proposal has not met with significant approval. I have evidence of secret opposition from 'dry' wet chemists who envy t h e laboratory accomplishments of spectroscopists."
