CAS Promotes Seven Chemical Abstracts Service has promoted Dr. John T. Dickman to as
sistant department head in the abstract editorial d e p a r t m e Ή t. Formerly an assistant editor, Dr. Dickman now is responsible for editing CA-Bio-
Dickman chemical Sections. A native of New Bremen, Ohio, he
received a B.S. in science education from Ohio State University in 1950. He taught chemistry at Urbana High School (Urbana, Ohio) for three years, served in the U.S. Army for two years, and then returned to Ohio State where he received an M.S. in 1957. He joined CAS in 1960 after receiving a Ph.D. in physiological chemistry from osu.
Dr. Dickman is a member of the American Documentation Institute, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and ACS.
Four CAS staff members have been promoted from assistant editor to associate editor. Dr. Michael N. Hoech-stetter joined CAS in 1960 in the general subject indexing department after receiving a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Michigan State University.
Edlen G. Johnson, who received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1959, joined the CAS staff in the general subject index-editing department that year.
Parran M. Keesecker, Jr., a 1957 graduate of Carson-Newman College (B.S. in biology and organic chemistry), has been with CAS in general subject index-editing since 1960. He had been a research chemist with S. E. Massengill Co., Bristol, Tenn.
Dr. William C. Undeutsch joined the CAS staff in 1958 in the organic index editing department after five years as a research chemist with Du Pont. Now in the abstract editorial department, Dr. Undeutsch received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1958.
In the CAS Research and Development Division, two staff members have been promoted from research assistant to research associate. Frederick
Feaver, who is responsible for CAS payrolls and data processing operations, joined the staff in 1962 after six years as data processing manager for Midland-Ross Corp. Harry L. Morgan, formerly with the State of Ohio, Department of Highways, joined CAS as a programer in 1962. He received a B.S. in mathematics from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1961.
Levitt Joins Analytical Staff Dr. Arnold E. Levitt has joined the staff of Analytical Chemistry as an as
sistant e d i t o r . He transfers from the C&EN New York editorial office. Dr. Levitt received a B.A. in chemistry from Reed College and an M.S. and
Ph.D. (1955) from Oregon State University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, and worked as a research chemist for Esso Research and Engineering and for American Potash & Chemical.
Dr. Levitt joined the Applied Journals staff in October 1961 as an assistant editor in the C&EN Washington office. He transferred to the New York editorial office in April 1962, and remained there until his return to Washington to join Analytical Chemistry.
Appointments Dr. Henry Eyring, President of the American Chemical Society, has appointed the following members to represent the Society at special functions:
• Dr. Gilbert E. Moos will represent the Society at the inauguration of William Louis Whitson as president of Clarkson College of Technology on Sept. 20.
• Dr. L. H. Dunlap will represent the Society at the inauguration of Keith Spalding as president of Franklin and Marshall College on Sept. 26.
• Dr. William D. Ehmann will represent the Society at the inauguration of Carl McClellan Hill as president of Kentucky State College on Oct. 11.
New Local Section Officers UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS. Dr. Russell S. Drago, associate professor of inorganic
chemistry at the university, is the chairman of the University of Illinois Section for 1963-64. Other officers are Dr. Thomas J. Han-ratty, chairman-elect; Peter Beck, secretary; and Dr.
John M. Clark, Jr., treasurer.
MOJAVE DESERT. Dr. Raymond T. Merrow, head of the solid propellants
branch at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake, Calif., is the new chairman of the Mojave Desert Section. Other officers are Wallery M. Sergy, chairman-elect; Dean H, Couch, secretary;
and A. Pat Townsend, treasurer.
NORTHEAST TENNESSEE. Dr. Kermit B. Whetsel, senior chemist with Tennessee
Eastman Co., is the new chairman of the Northeast Tennessee S e c t i o n . Other officers are Dr. V. A. Hoyle, Jr., chairman-elect, and Albert L. S t o n e , secretary-treasurer. All officers are with Ten
nessee Eastman Co.
INDIANA. Maurice E. Clark, department head of analytical laboratories at
Eli Lilly and Co., is the new chairman of the Indiana Section. Other officers are LeRoy A. Springman, chairman-elect; Dr. Sidney A. Kilsheimer, secretary; and Dr. Robert I. Blicken-staff, treasurer.
SOUTH CAROLINA. Dr. Oscar D. Bonner, head of the department of chem
