Dear friends of the Greek National Opera,

The two summer months in the 2012/3 artistic period promise a medley of delights, with famous directors, internationally acclaimed soloists and works that are landmarks in the history of the world operatic repertory.

It is with great pleasure that we announce two major opera productions at the Herod Atticus Theatre, starting with Richard Wagner’s grandiose The Flying Dutchman, conducted by Lucas Karytinos. The performance, which is directed by the internationally renowned Yannis Kokkos (premieres on June 7), honours the memory of the Greek bass George Pappas and his contribution to the art of opera.

The second major production, opening on July 27, is Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, directed by Hugo de Ana. This production promises to be a majestic performance with impressive sets and marks the famed Argentinean director’s second appearance at the Roman Odeon after his successful presentation of Tosca, last year.

In the context of its outward-looking philosophy, the GNO will also be on the road with the «Suitcase Opera» continuing its tour of the country. The GNO Ballet, meanwhile, will travel to Nafplio Festival, to the Apollo Theatre on Syros and the Festival of Arts and Letters in Lefkada.

Back at the capital’s Olympia Theatre, talented young artists with very bright future ahead of them will appear in the annual show organized by the Greek National Opera’s Dance School on July 4, while on July 16 & 17, students of the Greek National Opera’s Opera Studio will present their modern and entertaining take on Mozart’s comic opera, La finta semplice (The Pretended Simpleton).

Last but not least, we are also happy to announce the debut appearance of the students of Dance Box, an educational initiative launched by the GNO in December 2012, which will be held as part of the Evening of Young Choreographers, in which the emerging talent of the GNO Ballet present original pieces. The two groups will appear together in one performance at the Olympia Theatre on July 6 & 7.

We look forward to seeing you at our performances.

The Greek National Opera celebrates the bicentennial of Richard Wagner’s birth with a production of The Flying Dutchman, an opera presented for the first time at the Herod Atticus Odeon. The Flying Dutchman marked the composer’s shift to a new set of values.

Yannis Kokkos, in his first collaboration with the Greek National Opera, imbues the Dutchman with very human and timeless qualities, telling his story through the eyes of Senta. By exploring the notions of hubris, redemption, love, self-destruction and death, the acclaimed director presents a stunning interpretation of the work with direct references to ancient Greek drama.

After completing their cycle of studies, the students of the Greek National Opera’s Opera Studio are presenting a contemporary take on Mozart’s comic opera, The Pretended Simpleton. The opera transports us to a magical toy store where the marionettes become the heroes and come to life. They fall in love, get into squabbles and set traps for one another. Through their surreal adventures and games of honour, they all end up connected in the bond of marriage.

Seven dancers of the Greek National Opera Ballet present their own choreographies for two nights at the Olympia Theatre. As in years before, this year too, dancers who want to present their own choreographies to a theme and music of their own selection are given the opportunity to do so at the end of the artistic period. Their pieces are performed by their colleagues from the Greek National Opera Ballet.

For the first time this year, moreover, 11 dancers from the Dance Box initiative of the GNO Ballet, which was launched in December 2012, will be presenting their first team effort in a piece choreographed by Renato Zanella.

THE NEW HOUSE OF GREEK NATIONAL OPERA AT THE STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION CULTURAL CENTRE In late 2015, the Greek National Opera is scheduled to move to its new premises at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. The new opera house, with an area of 28,000 square metres, is an architectural gem designed to enhance the operatic experience for the audience and the artists alike. Cutting-edge acoustics, new technological possibilities, flexibility in scene changes and aesthetic quality rank the new building among the best opera houses in the world.

Construction for the new venue began in October 2012. The Cultural Centre represents the biggest single donation made by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which will be covering the entire cost of constructing as well as equipping the building with a donation of 566 million euros.

Other than the new premises for the GNO, the SNFCC will also include the new cutting-edge Greek National Library, as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park, which will cover an area of 17 hectares. Upon its completion at the end of 2015, the SNFCC will be donated to the Greek State, which will then have sole responsibility for its operation and upkeep.

Designed by the internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano and his firm, the SNFCC is an ambitious project on a national scale with significant potential to transform the Greek cultural and urban landscape, especially under the current circumstances. The relocation of the Greek National Opera to its new premises, promises to mark a new and bright chapter in the history of the country’s only opera company.

Meanwhile, July 2013 is expected to see the launch of the SNFCC Visitors’ Centre following a nationwide competition for its design by architecture students at Greek universities. The plan foresees a light, temporary structure that will operate until the completion of the SNFCC in late 2015, offering visitors the opportunity to tour the site, and to learn more about the SNFCC, such as its history, its structure and its mission, as well as its future prospects. The building will also function as a public exhibition space and a venue for other events related to the development of the SNFCC. The Visitors’ Centre will provide information pamphlets, interactive screenings and wireless Internet access, all aimed at providing continuous updates on the progress of the project and at raising public awareness in regards to its role.
