KOINONIA GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter SEPTEMBER/ ™∂¶Δ∂ªμƒπO™ 2015 New Beginnings . . . I would like to wish everyone in the parish a happy month of September. To me the month of September when you see the leaves change from green to the bright colors gives me the season of hope. September is a month in the Church calendar that celebrates on September 1, of every year the beginning of the new Ecclesiastical Year. It has also been desig- nated by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America under the spiritual Leadership of His Eminence Arch- bishop Demetrios as “EARTH DAY”or “GREEN DAY”. If we look back from last September till today, I can say that the St. Nicholas Community is growing and improving day by day. Throughout this year we saw old and new faces working together. It was great to see thousands of people coming to church with their families experiencing that our faith in Christ is grow- ing. There hasn’t been a Sunday that our church was not filled and even through the summer months the atten- dance in church has been amazing. Continuing on, I think that everyone had a great time during the Greek festival. I saw many new faces working the booths, the kitchen, the dining room and many other areas of the festival. It’s great to see the support from our young adults. I would like to personally thank our festival Chair- men, Frank Mitsos and John Korologos for the months of preparations that went into making this festival once again a great success. I would like to thank the commit- tee chairpersons, members, volunteers, and sponsors that truly helped to put on this festival. I also would like to thank all our young people especially our Goyan’s, the Hellenic Dancers, Ellinakia Dancers, Greek school Dancers and their instructors for their wonderful per- formances throughout the festival. There are so many people and Organizations to thank especially the La- dies who for five months were preparing the delicious food and pastries that were sold at the festival. To all the Organizations who sponsored the festival baking sessions, and donated all the ingredients that went into making the delicious food. God Bless all of you. To the officers and members of the St. Nicholas Parish, to our financial team and all of our cashiers who collected the monies from the festival, I thank you for your dedica- tion and service. A job well done!! Thank you to all our wonderful and dedicated volunteers along with our Se- curity team for spending many hours securing all the CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 locations of the festival and keeping our community and neighborhood safe. I also would like to thank the festival Raffle Committee for dedicating months before the festival to sell the tickets. This is not an easy task; the Raffle committee plays an important part in the fi- nancial success of our festival. Thank you Maria Salpeas our Church Secretary and her staff of volun- teers, for their dedicated work and service. This year we had a pleasant surprise. His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey gave his bless- ings to bring the Holy Icon of the Panagia Ipseni from Lardos, Rhodes to our church. Multiple services were celebrated from morning to night. Hundreds of people gathered to give honor and tribute to our Mother of God each day. I would like to thank Mother Mariam the Abyss of the Monastery, and Sister Kassiani for bringing the Holy Icon of the Panagia Ipseni to Balti- more. This event was one of the highlights of the year for our parish. Strolling down memory lane, we also had the pleasure of celebrating our 60th Church Anni- versary. Over 700 people attended this jubilant cel- ebration and it brought back a lot of wonderful memo- ries to the parishioners of our Community. I would like to thank on behalf of the parish, Mrs. Nora Kefalas and her hard working committee members for not only planning this event, but making it the greatest event ever attended. These are just a few events that took place during the year. If I had to write down all the activities that our parish goes through during the year, there wouldn’t be enough room on this newsletter to express our yearly schedule and events that our Church and Organizations go through throughout the year. September is also the month that everything begins in the church. Our families are back from their vaca- tions, our kids are in school, and our church organiza- tions are ready to start fresh their schedules and activi- ties. We are welcoming back, the members of our St. Nicholas Byzantine Choir, our Chantors, our Philoptochos Members, our St. Nicholas Diamond’s, our Goyan’s along with their Advisors, our JOY group along with their Advisor, our YAL group, our Sunday School Teachers, Faculty, and Students, the officers and members of our Greek school PTA, the Greek School Teachers and Students, our Hellenic, Ellinakia, and

MESSAGE FROM THEPARISH PRESIDENT

MHNYMA TOY ¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀΔ∏™ ∫Oπ¡OΔ∏Δ∞™

··Dear Parishioners,

The Saint Nicholas Church is moving for-ward, and we want all of our parishioners tobe informed.

Starting in mid-September, 2015, we willbe opening the Saint Nicholas Bilingual EarlyEducation Center.  As I write this letter toyou, the staff is busy setting up and preparingfor the new school year.  Look for future in-formation regarding an open house.  Also, weare actively seeking qualified teachers andaides.  If you know someone that may be in-terested, please have them contact ParishCouncil Board Member, VasiliosArgiropoulos at [email protected].

Furthermore, we are actively looking to hire a Youth and YoungAdult Ministry Director to develop programs and guide our minis-tries.  A job description is posted on the church bulletin board andwill soon be posted on-line.  In addition to a Youth Director, weare also seeking an administrator for the Plateia.  Again, the jobdescription is posted on the church bulletin board and will soon beposted on-line.

We have also seen a very busy spring and summer when projectshave been undertaken:1. Painting the Greek School office, classrooms, and hallways.2. Installation of new photo-copying machines in the Greek Schooland main office.3. Installation of a new floor in one of the Greek School classrooms.4. Purchase and installation of 5 Prometheans Boards for the GreekSchool and Early Education Center.5. Professional cleaning and waxing of all the floors in the GreekSchool classrooms and hallways.6. Professional cleaning and waxing of the floors in the large andsmall hall.7. Painting and repair of the outside of the market in preparation ofthe opening of the new Early Education Center. Outside awningswill be installed in the near future.8. Installation of new flooring in the Early Education Center tomeet Baltimore City codes.9. Purchase and installation of  brand new furniture for the EarlyEducation Center in accordance with Baltimore City codes.10. Painting of the gym, installation of a new basketball hoops andnew regulation flooring will be completed by the end of September,2015.11. Painting of the stairwells in the church and school building12. Currently in the process of replacing all the heating and air con-ditioning units of the church.13. Replacement of the Atrium and Early Education Center roofsas well as repair of the church roof and fascia.14. Installation of carpet on the 2nd floor of the Plateia.15. Re-striping of the church parking lot.Future Projects include:1.  Painting the outside of the church.2.  Renovation of the restrooms throughout the church.

None of this would be possible without the generous donationfrom an anonymous donor and donations from several familieswithin the St. Nicholas Community.  These funds were earmarkedspecifically for the church facilities and for the improvement of ourGreek School and the advancement of the Saint Nicholas BilingualEarly Education Center.

Your continued stewardship pledges and involvement in ourchurch are still greatly needed.  We will be holding a General As-sembly meeting on Sunday, September 20, 2015 to discuss ourprogress as well as nominate individuals to the Parish Council.  Serving as a member of the Parish Council is a privilege and ahonor.  Please consider giving of yourself.  We are looking for indi-viduals with a strong desire to serve as well as individuals who canthink outside the box and help us grow in our faith and commitmentto spread the word of our Lord Jesus, Christ.Thank you.

In Christ, Demos Anastasiades,Parish Council President

Greek school dancers, the members of the Parish Life Committee,Festival Committee, Parade Committee, the outside societies such as,Rhodian Society, Chios Society, AHEPA, Pan Gregorian Society,Peloponnesian Society, and Macedonian Society.

We are gearing up to face another challenging year, which will in-clude the opening of our new “Learning Center”. It should be up andrunning this month. I would like to challenge all the parishioners whohave the ability to advertise our new Learning Center. I have alwayslearned that the best way to advertise is by word of mouth. If youknow of any families that could register their children to our Learn-ing Center please contact the church office so we can accommodatethem.

We are continuously working on the “Plateia.” I hope that in2 years or less we can burn the mortgage and free us from theenormous expense that we struggle to pay every month. I hopeand pray that by the Grace of God, we can accomplish this greattask together. In order for us to accomplish this major task, weneed the help of our parishioners. We can’t do this over night, butwe can accomplish this if we work together. If you are schedulinga Baptism, a Wedding, a Makaria Luncheon, a Birthday Party, aSweet Sixteen Party, an Anniversary, or any kind of event, pleaselook into booking our Plateia for your event. We have a wonder-ful facility that can hold up to (400 to 500) people on the secondfloor and (150 to 175) on the first floor.

May the Lord our God continue to enlighten and strengthenour new Ecclesiastical year.

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

I would like to welcome you to our Greek School and wishyou a healthy and prosperous academic year. All the teach-ers of our school, and I as the President of the Greek School, hope to meet up with the needs and expectations of both, you, as parents, and the students.

We are proud to present a well organized curriculum thisyear, with staff well trained in educational skills and having afluency in Greek, as all of our teachers are born and raised inGreece. As the acquisition of fluency in a foreign language isa rather complex process, it is required that both parts, us asa school and the kids as students, are accountable, so that thebest results are accomplished. Therefore, it is going to be aprocess that requires a lot of work in class, first and foremost, but also a good preparation at home is essential. For thesereasons, we consider the relation of teacher-parents as a re-lation of collaboration and constructive feedback for bothsides, and we will do our best to work towards this direction.

This year, we are also hoping to form 3 classes ofEllinomatheia:

-Ellinomatheia 1 (A1-A2)-Ellinomatheia 2 (B1)-Ellinomatheia 3 (f1)

These classes will prepare our students for the Final Ex-ams of Language Literacy, and according to the level theywill succeed at, they can manage to get College credits, oreven a teaching license, once succeeding in the Exam of °2-level. It is important for all the parents to consider support-ing their children for these exams, since they provide, notonly a better knowledge of the language, but also a well-rec-ognized degree they can use later on in their life. Please, con-tact me for further information.

I hope this year will be creative and joyful for everyone! The school year will begin with the Blessing within the first 2weeks of September, and student registration will also takeplace in the church, starting September 2nd. You can send orbring the registration form in the Church Office anytime, within the summertime.

The following are enclosed in the envelope:

- One Student Registration Form- The Weekly Program- The Annual Program

I am looking forward to dynamic school year and I expectto meet you all at school!

Sincerely Yours,

Mrs. Stamatia IeromonahosPresident of the Greek School CommitteeCell phone: 443-742-2424e-mail: [email protected]
