The Socratic Method

The Socratic Method is a form of inquiry and debate between individuals with opposing viewpoints based on asking and answering questions to stimulate rational thinking and to illuminate ideas. It incorporates dialectic (Greek: διαλεκτική) reasoning based on the exchange of arguments and counter-arguments, advocating propositions (theses) and counter-propositions (antitheses).

The Socratic Method

The outcome of such an exchange might be the refutation of one of the relevant points of view, or a synthesis or combination of the opposing assertions, or at least a qualitative transformation in the direction of the dialogue.

Socrates Cafe

The Socrates Cafe is a national grassroots movement devoted to bringing philosophical inquiry into our daily lives. The goal is for each of us to be better questioners and listeners. We can then use our improved skills to make better decisions in our personal lives and better consider public issues.

Socrates Cafe

A typical group meets in a public place, is open to anyone who wishes to attend, and uses the Socratic method to discuss a question which is chosen by vote or which is announced shortly in advance. Typically there are no prerequisites, and no reading or other preparation is required.

Socrates Cafe

The kind of conversation most of us experience -- browbeating, talking through one another -- is literally destroying America. Socrates Cafe revives a kind of anti-guru philosophy in which the questions are more important than the answers.
