HAIDARI

History

Haidari

Haidari is a western suburb of Athens, located between Mount Egaleo and the Poikilo Oros.       Centuries now is the natural and historic entrance of the capital, the western gate of Athens. The root of the word Haidari probably comes from the Arabic HAIDAR (lion). The name may be given by Haidar- Pasha, during the Turkish owner of the farm, where today there is the tower Palataki ,which called Acherdari. The history of Haidari is connected to all the historical periods of Greece, starting from ancient times to the ancient town of Aphaia and ancient Sacred Way, which connected the ancient times the Agora with the Temple of Demeter at Eleusis. Then a piece of ancient municipality "Ermou."      In the Byzantine period found in Haidari the most important monument of Byzantine art, the monastery of Daphne in the name mosaic.] In the Ottoman period Haidari has an important place here. On the site where is the traditional castle of the king in August 1826 Karaiskaki’s and Favierou’s forces faced Kioutachis who was sieging the Acropolis.

During the German occupation, Haidari’s camp wrote history. In these areas imprisoned and tortured 21,000 people and killed more than 2,000. Quarantine feature the BLOCK 15 retained exactly as it was then.       By the end of the century Haidari was known as a beautiful pine area with good climate without permanent resident population. By 1924 virtually come first inhabitants, 54 families of refugees mainly from New Fokea Tsakmakli and Asia Minor.       Expropriated 50 acres and built 25 two-family houses. Points and Cappadocians were installed in 1927 at Haidari and new houses are springing up. In 1928 Haidari reaches 1,000 inhabitants. The city is 1947. The agricultural land is converted into small plots and the 1,000 residents in 1928 of almost 13 773 (1951) and 24.002 (1961). In 1955 Haidari becomes first city plan in which they most areas and the rest in 1967. Last put in the plan and the Upper Dasos and Skaramangas.       The mountains Egaleo and Poikilo are rocky limestone blocks, mostly with herbaceous vegetation.       In several places there are small clusters or dasylia by large trees such as pines, myrtles from a pine forest that was destroyed. According to descriptions of Pausanias, the traveler and philosopher Dikaiarchou Thucydides fertile area was planted with fruit trees, fig trees and grapevines.

mountain areas, especially the foot was covered with pines, cypresses and forests of Dafni, Korydallos and Scaramanga was renowned for the extent and density.      The years that followed the Asia Minor disaster and the harsh occupation period many trees were cut for firewood or destroyed by fires that put the Germans to hunt or not to allow insurgents to hide (though the logging area at the time of great economic crisis saved many families from the economic decline and certainly at that time no one could imagine what would follow regarding the destruction of the environment).      Also the site of Poikilo mountain long used as pasture for herds of goats. According to the study of mountain reforestation Egaleo (1977) of G.
