34. Christ is the foundation of the whole educational enterprise in a Catholic school. His revelation gives new meaning to life and helps man to direct his thought, action and will according to the Gospel, making the beatitudes his norm of life. The fact that in their own individual ways all members of the school community share this Christian vision, makes the school "Catholic"; principles of the Gospel in this manner become the educational norms since the school then has them as its internal motivation and final goal.

The physical face of the Lord is pictured with infinite variety by countless imaginations, though whatever it was like, he certainly had only one.

Nor, as regards the faith we have in the Lord Jesus Christ, it is in the least relevant to salvation what our imaginations picture him like...

What does matter is that we think of him as human.

35. The Catholic school is committed thus to the development of the whole person, since in Christ, the Perfect Man, all human values find their fulfillment and unity. Herein lies the specifically Catholic character of the school. Its duty to cultivate human values in their own legitimate right in accordance with its particular mission to serve all men has its origin in the figure of Christ. He is the One Who ennobles man, gives meaning to human life, and is the Model which the Catholic school offers to its pupils.

Task #2Responses to research on

academic achievement and/or the Vatican II quotes

How do you define academic achievement/excellence

in your classroom?School-wide?

What are differences between Public, Private, Catholic schools?

Page 37: Monday, June 17, 2013. ALiz BMary Eileen CSandi DGerm EDon F Jane Peter Jensen will be joining us from Peru online T-Th.

Liz: I have to admit, my first reaction was a healthy dose of skepticism…

Germ: I think we all tend to be rather egotistical about things...so we think our schools, our jobs, our country is the best. We forget that their are both struggling and fantastic school in all arenas. Sometimes in the same building!

Don: … 1) The quality of the education is high2) Their is a strong values component. The values are not

only exuded by the staff, but there is a strong shared values among many of the families and fellow students.

3) The spiritual instruction/Catholic philosophies. Our children have heard our perspective on faith matters for their first years. It's nice to have additional divergent voices that allow our children to find their own faith trail.

Task #3Identify a specific challenge that concerns you related to Catholic schools being able to fulfill the

mission of Christian faith in action

Page 39: Monday, June 17, 2013. ALiz BMary Eileen CSandi DGerm EDon F Jane Peter Jensen will be joining us from Peru online T-Th.

1) Liz: For me as a Catholic educator, it is clearly a challenge; how to express and live out the message of love and inclusion...but not rock the boat, and not "call out" biblical 'purists' who vehemently disagree with me? Mary Eileen: How will the schools deal with current issues and questions of equality and justice when the Church's teaching are not changing?

2) Liz: “Walk the Walk”Mary Eileen: How to make it available, and thus affordable, to everyone… Another related concern, stemming from the socioeconomic status of many students attending Catholic schools, is the lack of knowledge and awareness students have of the plight of many in our society- those struggling with poverty, discrimination, illnesses, injustices, etc. How will Catholic schools bridge this gap?

Page 40: Monday, June 17, 2013. ALiz BMary Eileen CSandi DGerm EDon F Jane Peter Jensen will be joining us from Peru online T-Th.

Sandi: A totally different perspective - I had one student in my class the last couple of years who attended Hill because of a scholarship. He was poor, really poor and it gave me a new perspective…Hill worked for him because he graduated and it worked for him because he left his background for 8-10 hours a day to be successful in school. Hill worked for him because the gang members were not here.

8. The influence of the Church in the field of education is shown in a special manner by the Catholic school. No less than other schools does the Catholic school pursue cultural goals and the human formation of youth. But its proper function is to create for the school community a special atmosphere animated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth grow according to the new creatures they were made through baptism as they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith.

Closing Prayer -The Sign of the CrossCrossing & Blessing One’s Self With the Trinity

We have an ancient practice. If no passage of Scripture has prescribed it, assuredly custom, which without doubt flowed from tradition, has confirmed it. For how can anything come into use, if it has not first been handed down?

At every forward step and movement, at every going in and out, when we put on our clothes and shoes, when we bathe, when we sit at table, when we light the lamps, on couch, on seat, in all the ordinary actions of daily life

we trace upon the forehead the sign of the crossTertullian, De Corona Militis, Chapter III, A.D. 204
