Ι. CURRICULUM VITAE
1949 Born in Athens. 1967 Graduated from the Ζ' Lyceum of Athens and started my studies on
Natural Sciences at the University of Athens. 1971 Obtained my diploma of «Physiognosy and Geography». 1972-1974 Served the Greek Army as a liutenant of Artillery. 1973-1976 Registered and studied at the newly established Geological
Department of the University of Athens and obtained the Diploma of Geology.
1974 I started to work as assistant at the Laboratory of Geology and
Paleontology of the University of Athens and started my PhD thesis. 1977 Elected member of the Board of the Geological Society of Greece
and re-elected in 1979, 1981, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1994.
1978 Attended a Seminar on Tectonic Geology within a post-graduate
course of 3rd cycle at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. 1978 Nominated Doctor of Geology from the School of Sciences of the
University of Athens. 1979 Nominated Chief-assistant with permanent post at the Laboratory of
Geology and Paleontology of the University of Athens. 1979-1980 Obtained a scholarship from the Swiss Government and I worked for
one academic year at the University of Lausanne. During my visit I participated at the post-graduate cycle on Tectonics and the Geology of the Alps and initiated my research at the western Alps. During the summer period of 1981 I revisited my fieldwork area in the Western Alps following a second scholarship from the Swiss Government.
1980-81-82 Lectured on the subject of Applied Geology for the students of
Geology at the University of Athens. 1982 Nominated Lecturer of the newly established Department of
Dynamic, Tectonic and Applied Geology of the University of Athens. 1982-1983 During the first semester of 1982-1983 I worked as Professeur
Associe at the University of Reims (France) giving lectures on Tectonic Geology for the 3rd year students (Licence) and Paleogeography and Tectonic Development of the Eastern Mediterranean for the 4th year students (Maitrise).
1982-1983 From the second semester of 1982-1983 up to the present day I lecture on Geology of Greece, at the University of Athens. In 1986, I published a textbook on Geology of Greece (240 p).
1984 Organised the Annual Meeting of the IGCP Νο 5 of UNESCO / IUGS,
followed by a 6-days geological excursion on Pre-Alpine formations of Northern Greece (Very positive remarks in Geochronique, 13, 1985).
1985 Elected Assistant Professor on Dynamic Geology, Tectonic Geology,
Geology of Greece and Neotectonics at the Department of Dynamic, Tectonic and Applied Geology of the University of Athens.
1985 Appointed Member of the Editorial Board of the Scientific Journal
“Annales Geologiques des Pays Helleniques”, which in 2006 was re- named as “Hellenic Journal of Geosciences”, edited by the University of Athens (since 1942).
1985-1986 Organised and gave lectures for the newly established topics of
Microtectonics (5th semester) and Structural Analysis (6th semester). For both newly established cources I published textbooks.
1986 Organised the 3rd Scientific Congress of the Geological Society of
Greece (President of the Organizing Committee). This congress was the first international with strong participation of foreign colleagues and included two geological excursions.
1986 -87 During the second semester of 1986-1987 organised and gave
lectures for the Geology of Europe. I published a short textbook for the newly established cource.
1988 Organised the 4th Scientific Congress of the Geological Society of
Greece (President of the Organizing Committee) with two additional geological excursions. Simultaneously, I organised the 2nd regional meeting of the IGCP National Committees of UNESCO / IUGS of Southeastern Europe.
1988 UNESCO/IUGS approved the International Geological Correlation
Programme IGCP Νο 276 entitled "Paleozoic Geodynamic Domains and their Alpidic Evolution in the Tethys" which I had submitted in 1987. I was elected Project Leader of IGCP no 276 by the representatives of 21 participating countries.
1988 Elected President of the Geological Society of Greece and re-elected
in 1990 and 1994. 1989 Elected Associate Professor at the Department of Dynamic, Tectonic
and Applied Geology of the University of Athens.
1991 Appointed Member of the Editorial Committee of the scientific journal "Geologica Balcanica" which is edited in Sofia by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
1991-92 & Elected Director of the Department of Dynamic, Tectonic and 1992-93 Applied Geology of the University of Athens. 1992 Organised the 6th Congress of the Geological Society of Greece,
focused on «The Geology of the Aegean». Simultaneously, I organised two annual meetings with field excursions of IGCP progects No262 and No 276 of UNESCO / IUGS.
1992 Co-organised the Symposium ΙΙ/12 entitled : "Paleozoic Geodynamic
Environments in Tethys" within the 29th International Geological Congress, held at Kyoto, Japan. The Symposium contained 26 scientific contributions, which were published in a special volume.
1993-95 Elected President of the Carpatho-Balkan Geological Association by
the 8 member states at the board meeting in May 1993, held in Budapest.
1993 Elected Professor of Tectonic Geology, Geology of Greece,
Neotectonics and Dynamic Geology at the Department of Dynamic, Tectonic and Applied Geology of the University of Athens.
1993 -98 Appointed President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection
Organization (EPPO), supervised by the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.
1993-99 Appointed President of the European Centre for Earthquake
Prediction and Prevention within the Scientific Agreement of the Council of Europe (Strasburg).
1993-99 Appointed National Representative for Civil Protection at the 11th
Direction of the European Union in Brussels and in the Council of Europe at Strasburg.
1994-2000 Elected President and Director of the National Centre for Marine
Research (NCMR). 1994-2000 Appointed Member of the Board of the International Commitee for the
Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean (CIESM), based in Monaco.
1995-2000 Elected President of the Marine Research Centres of the
Mediterranean (MEDMARIS). 1995-2000 Elected Member of the Board of the European Marine Sciences in
1995 Appointed Member of the Editorial Commitee of the scientific journal “Geologica Slovaca”, which is edited in Bratislava, Slovakia.
1996-2000 Appointed President of the National Commitee of Marine Research
