Maundy Thursday andGood Friday ServicesOn Maundy Thursday we celebrate the Lord’s Supper remembering
that it was on this night that our Lord and Savior told his disciples in
the upper room after breaking the bread, “This is my body given for
you; do this in remembrance of me”(Luke 22:19). “In the same way
after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant
in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of
me.” Please join us at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, in our
Sanctuary for a family friendly Maundy Thursday service. Rev.
Orlando Lopez will be preaching and Chuck Alexander will be
leading worship as we come to the Lord’s table on this special
evening of worship and remembrance.
On Good Friday, we have a service of darkness remembering the
darkness that came over the land on the Friday that Jesus was
crucified. Norman Goad and our wonderful choir will lead us
through a moving service of diminishing lights as we gather for
worship to remember the great sacrifice our Lord and Savior made
for us. Please join us at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6, for a time of
thoughtful reflection and worship.
What Are You Doing withthe Rest of Your Life? That’s the question this year’s Morris Distinguished Preaching Series
speaker will ask in three compelling messages Sunday and Monday,
April 22 and 23.
Rich Kannwischer, pastor of the 3,000-member St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach, CA will be on a speaking
marathon of sorts, preaching the first message of the Series at all
three Sunday morning services, April 22.
He will give
his second
sermon in a
special 5:00
p.m. Sunday
service in the
Fellowship
Center. Rich
will complete
the Series at a
noon lunch in
the Parlor,
Monday, April
23 from 11:45
until 12:45
which will
allow people to come from work, have a box lunch and still get back
before 1:00 p.m.

Rev. Howard Griffin says, “We only spend a very small percentage of
our time in church, and Rich’s theme comes from his conviction that
wherever you are, wherever you go, whether it be your office, your
school, a social event, wherever, God has sent you there and he
wants you to be a light of his love where he sends you.”
Kannwischer, a native of Waco, is known to some in the
congregation for his work a few years ago as the navigator for the
year-long planning process in which representatives from all areas of
the membership developed the church’s vision for the future. At
that time, he was pastor of First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio.
Reserve your box lunch for $7.00 by noon, Friday, April 20. You may
bring your own lunch, but please reserve a seat so that adequate
seating can be arranged. Prepayment for the box lunch is
encouraged to expedite checking in, distribution of the box
lunches, and beginning the message at 12:10 p.m. Reservations and
pre-payment may be made online at firstpres.com or by calling the
automated reservation line, 373-4288.
Care for children through kindergarten will be available at all
services.
For 21 years, The Joe S. and Lettie S. Morris Distinguished Preaching
Series has brought outstanding preachers to First Pres for the
benefit of the congregation and community.
On April 22 and 23, what will you be doing with your life?
"Bringing Our Love"to Bolivia Mission TripOn March 11, a team from First Pres landed in La Paz, Bolivia with
the mission of “Bringing Our Love,” to the Mallasilla Bible Church
and to further the major investment of money and talent First Pres
is making in Camp El Puente, the retreat center it operates in the
Los Yungas jungle outside La Paz.
The team composed of Murray Gossett, Joe Batson, Ruth
Whitehead, Marty and Cal Smith, Diana and Norman Goad, and Jan
and Charley Hargrave worked at the retreat center for three days.
First Pres has also contributed building materials, a stove,
refrigerator, and microwave oven to the camp.
During the remaining five days of the trip in La Paz, probably the
most humbling and interesting time was half a day the team spent
dressed as, and working with, “shoe shiners,” under-resourced
people who shine shoes for 15¢ a pair, and to whom the Mallasilla
church has a ministry.
The team visited the church’s prestigious K-12 school, the only one
in Bolivia recognized by both that country and the US. Graduates of
the school have been accepted at ivy-league schools and other
institutions of higher learning in this country.
Before returning home, the team worshipped with more than 200
Bolivians on Sunday morning in their "new" church still under
construction.
Many new friendships were formed during meals and Bible studies in
the homes of the Mallasilla congregation. Every team member
returned to Amarillo filled with love for the Bolivians, assured that
God is doing a mighty work through His servants there. We are all
looking forward to partnering with our new Bolivian family there and
back here!

Mother-Daughter TeaUshers in Spring!Spring hats, finger sandwiches, photo ops, and tea were everywhere
last Sunday morning during the Third Annual Mother-Daughter Tea in
the Parlor. The room was abuzz with lively conversation, smiles, and
hugs as can be seen from a few of the many photos made during the
event sponsored by Children and Their Families and FPC Women
Ministries. Purses and toiletries were collected to contribute to the
Downtown Women's Shelter. Residents there will get first choice of
the goods and the remainder will be sold in their thrift store to help
fund the Shelter. Following is a photo glimpse of all the fun.

"BACH'S" LUNCHES CONCLUDE
The "Bach’s" lunches conducted at various churches every Friday
during Lent have been a wonderful time for reflection and hearing
good music among friends. The 25-minute organ recitals beginning
at 12:05 have been followed by time for “Bach’s” lunches with the
host churches providing tea, coffee and a place to eat with plenty
of time to get Bach to work by 1:00 p.m. The last of this year’s
recitals will be this Friday, March 30, at St. Andrew's Episcopal
Church with Margaret Lacy as organist.

REAL LIFE TO FEATURE DENA LOPEZ
“Real Life” will resume meeting on Tuesday, April 3, from 11:45
a.m. until 1:00 p.m., in the Parlor. Dena Lopez, wife of our
Hispanic ministry pastor, will be the speaker. Dena will recount her
“faith journey” and tell how she loves to share the love of Christ to
let everyone know they are not alone in their struggles.
All women of First Pres are encouraged to attend and guests are
welcome. A catered lunch will be provided for $8.00, or you may
bring your own lunch, but let us know you are coming so we will
have adequate seating. As an added convenience, childcare will be
available. Reservations must be made for lunch as well as childcare
no later than noon on Friday, March 30, by calling the automated
reservation line at 373-4288.
Dena grew up in Amarillo, attended Amarillo College, and after
much prayer surrendered to the call of God. She attended the Latin
American Bible Institute where she met the love of her life, Orlando
Lopez. They graduated, married, moved out of state, and began
their first pastorate, all within three months. They have three
children.
The Lopez family moved back to Amarillo in 2006 to begin their
second pastorate. After two years they felt the call to plant a
church. They are currently doing just that at First Pres. The “Road
Fellowship,” First Pres’ bilingual fellowship will meet on Sundays at
11:00 a.m. in the Chapel beginning May 6. Until then, they have a
monthly "preview" service the last Sunday of each month at 11:00
a.m. in the Chapel.

HELP HEM BLANKETS FOR EVELINE RIVERS
Join the Jean Miller Circle in hemming blankets for Eveline Rivers
Christmas boxes. Thousands of pieces of fleece are being hemmed
throughout the Panhandle to put in Christmas boxes for needy
children. For some children, these “blankets” will be their only
blankets. We do this in the spirit of Dorcas (Acts 7:36-39).
Blankets can be hemmed by non-sewing methods, sewing machine,
serger or hand sewn. If you are doing the blanket stitch by hand and
would like to have the edges pre-punched, please call Barbara
Biehler at 356-7501 or email her at [email protected].
Hemming of the blankets takes place from March-October. Blankets,
along with directions and sign-up sheets will be in boxes next to the
officers' mail boxes in the office hallway. Hemmed and un-hemmed
blankets will be due at the church on October 7 in order to be
returned to Eveline Rivers by October 11. Please share this mission
and deliver blankets to persons confined at home who would like
blankets delivered to them to hem. Please call Barbara Biehler at
356-7501 or Barbara Harrison at 358-2243 for more information.
