TThhee SSoocciieettyyThe Macedonian Society of Great Britain was founded in 1989 and is a Registered Charity (No:1044357) with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It is dedicated to the promotion ofMacedonian history, culture & heritage and is the main organisation in this country that informs andeducates the public that Macedonia, its history and its heritage, are Hellenic. The society is involved inorganising lectures & presentations, by well known historians, academics, journalists and politicians allopen to the general public. These events keep alive in the public consciousness the fact that although theMacedonian name has been misappropriated by a foreign people, our identity can not be.

Dinner - Dance andVassilopita 200628th January 2006

Last year’s Dinner-Dance was again held atthe London Marriott Hotel Regents Park.The Vassilopita was blessed by theRevd. Archimandrites Theonas Bakalis andNektarios Papagiannoulis. The event was agreat success with over 180 members andfriends of the society attending.

“Thrace: diversity is an advantage.”Lecture by Mr. Theodoros Theodorou

19th June 2006

Mr. Theodorou, Ambassador Councillor at theGreek Embassy in London, gave a very interestingand informative lecture concerning the borderregion of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which isinhabited by Greeks of different religions andcultural backgrounds. The subject matter was verychallenging and of great importance to thedevelopment of Greece in the context of anenlarged European Union.

Lecture by Dr. Zoe Chatzistavrou,organised together with the HHeelllleenniicc CCeennttrree

6th July 2006

Dr. Zoe Chatzistavrou, from the Museum ofModern Art in Thessaloniki, talked about theevolution of cinematography following World WarII and its effect on cultural and social life in

Central Macedonia, especially in Thessaloniki and Drama. The lecture also featured a short film,“Protection”, awarded the 1st prize at the Drama Film Festival.

Day cruise on the Thames with the“P/S Waverley”

24th September 2006The Waverley is the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world.Fifty members and friends of the Society embarked on a day cruise along the Thames to Sheerness andthe Medway. The fantastic weather, the clear air and the varied scenery made this day long cruise a tripto remember.

St. Demetrius - Cheese & Wine Party27th October 2006

The yearly Cheese & Wine Party held to commemorate the patron saint of the city of Thessaloniki, St.Demetrius was held at the Hellenic Centre. Over 100 people gathered for the event making it a veryenjoyable and successful evening. This was also the day the Society officially said farewell to its outgoingpresident Dr. Thanassis Giortzis, who has moved to Greece with his family for professional reasons.

Annual General Meeting14th January 2007

This year’s Annual General Meeting was held inthe crypt of Aghia Sophia. The special occasionwas the presentation of a cheque for £8,000 to theSociety, by the President of the Greek OrthodoxCommunity in Harrow & District, Mr. PantelisDemosthenous. This magnificent amount wasreceived following a surprise win of the top prizein a fundraising raffle draw held in support of thechurch of St. Panteleimon, which have finished theNew Community Hall and School and are buildinga new Byzantine Church.
