WASHINGTON: What's commonbetween a Texas wildfire, a dentist's chair, and Pakistan? Not much, but all three wereinvoked by angry and dismayed USlawmakers, some of whom want to stopthe US administration from givingAmerican taxpayer money to atreacherous, disloyal ally.

One of them, Texas Congressman TedPoe, introduced the Pakistan Foreign AidAccountability Act on recently, requiringthe state department to certify to Congressthat Pakistan is not providing sanctuary toterrorists before any money can bereleased. A furious Poe pointed to massivewildfires in his home state to ask withwhat conscience Washington could givemoney to Pakistan while neglectingdomestic needs.

"Too bad Texas isn't a foreign countrylike Pakistan," fumed Poe, pointing outthat the federal government has shelled outover $500 million for flood disaster aid toPakistan while ignoring wildfires in Texas.

"When Washington considered aid, if any,for disaster relief, it should at leastconsider Americans in Texas just asimportant as Pakistanis, but that doesn'tappear to be the case. Meanwhile, the firescontinue to burn in Texas."

Many lawmakers are confused andupset that the Obama administration issigning off money to Pakistan while at thesame time criticizing it for harbouringterrorists.

But in a move that recalled the US freepass for Pakistan's nuclear weaponsprogramme in the 1980s, secretary of stateHillary Clinton on March 18 certified toCongress that Islamabad had shown a"sustained commitment" to ending itssupport for Islamic militants in order tomeet conditions laid out in the Kerry-Lugar legislation to facilitate aid disbursal. Two days later, Mike Mullen, the top USmilitary official, accused ISI of ties withthe Haqqani group, even as CIA waszeroing on Osama bin Laden.

Pakistan's dalliance with terrorists isnow the worst kept secret in WashingtonDC, indeed in all of America. But its manyapologists in the capital, primed by alobbying firm that is paid $75,000 amonth, have already begun a damagecontrol exercise to keep the US moneyspigot flowing.

Mark Siegel, a lobbyist for Pakistan, told that he had been on Capitol Hill everyday to promote Pakistan's position on thekilling, talking to congressmen, senatorsand their aides.

Senator John Kerry, one of Pakistan'sprincipal supporters, said that the countrybe given benefit of doubt.

    D U B A I : A l - Q a i d aconfirmed the death ofOsama bin Laden in aninternet message and vowed

revenge on the United Statesand its allies, includingPakistan, according to a

statement issued by theIslamist militant group.

Five days after USPresident Barack Obama

announced binLaden's death in aUS raid in Pakistan,al-Qaida confirmedthe death of itsleader as a historicmoment, and vowednot to deviate fromthe path of armedstruggle.

"In a historic dayfor the great Islamicnation... themujahid (holywarrior) ShiekhAbu Abdullah,Osama binMohammed binLaden, God havemercy on him, waskilled on the path

taken by those before himand will be taken by othersafter him."

The global militantgroup, which said it willsoon release an audio tapemade by its leader a weekbefore he died, vowed not todeviate from the path ofarmed struggle and said binLaden's blood "is moreprecious to us and to everyMuslim than to be wasted invain."

"It will remain, withpermission from GodAlmighty, a curse that huntsthe Americans and theircollaborators and chase themoutside and inside theircountry," the militantnetwork said in a statementreleased on Islamist Internetforums.

"Their happiness will turninto sorrow, and their bloodwill be mixed with theirtears," al Qaida said.

"We call upon our Muslimpeople in Pakistan, on whoseland Sheikh Osama was

killed, to rise up and revolt tocleanse this shame that hasbeen attached to them by aclique of traitors and thieves... and in general to cleansetheir country from the filth ofthe Americans who spreadcorruption in it."

The al-Qaida statementalso urged the United Statesto treat the bodies of Osamabin Laden and those killedwith him in the raid withcare, and to return theirbodies.

"We warn the Americansnot to harm the corpse of thesheikh or expose it to anyindecent treatment or to harmany members of his family, living or dead, and to deliverthe corpses to their families,"it said.

"Any harm done willopen the doors of evil uponyou doubly, and you will nothave anyone but yourselvesto blame."

A Pakistani intelligenceofficial says a Yemeni-bornwife of Osama bin Ladenhas told them she had beenliving in the al-Qaida chief'sfinal hideout for six yearswithout leaving the upperfloors of the house.

  • booming economy has ledto improvement in standardof living everywhere, especially in cities.

Whether it is food, travel, entertainment or work, there is a greatrush everywhere.

But for the youth, the focus isgetting more on gizmos, gadgets, discos, pubs and internet. They don'thave any interest in national politicsand don't even know what'shappening around the world. Yet, theyhave their own unique problems.

For them, what matters is havingnoisy nights out, lounging in the pubs, tapping their feet to rocking music, showing off their high-end i-pods,mobiles, jeans and shoes and publicdisplay of affection to their partners. They feel being 'cool' and having'cool stuff' alone will give them agreat image in college campus or theircommon hang-outs. We can seearound us guys and gals strolling inlanes and parks with earphones andportable music systems or cellphones, completely shutting out fromthe world. They don't care aboutanyone or anything.

At the same time, they are lookingfor answers, support, freedom and aplace in the big wide world.

Todays girls feel it's cool toappear like a desirable youth icon. They don't feel any difficulty inflaunting their bodies, wearing shortskirts and tops. In the name of afashion statement, anything isacceptable, whether it is zany clothes

or visible marks on body or tattoos.Wearing tight clothes, exposing

legs or other parts of bodies, wearingmake-up, carrying accessories, everything is acceptable. The point isto make their own fashion statementor create their own little fashionworld and live their life according toown choice.

New technology like internet orweb gives us freedom to connect tothe rest of the world and search outnew things from the comfort of thehone. Of course, this tool is used formaking friends or dating, as they callit. Everyone who is young issupposed to be active on social mediasites such Facebook, Orkut, Twitter orMy Space.

The new generation is falling in,and out of love, at the click of amouse and no one bothers about old-fashioned statements like spendinghuge bucks on red roses, fixing yourhair for a date, blowing kisses orgiving tight hugs, love in today'stechnology-driven world has come toacquire a different meaningaltogether.

One sign of fast development isearly maturity in girls. In this agechanges are seen, felt andexperienced in the body as well at themental level. Being a teenage girl isvery difficult. This is an age whenthey don't know what they are doing;only they want to be happy andjoyful. They have fragile self-esteem

and ego and can hurt anyone easily, aswell as get hurt equally easily.

Teenage girls deal with a range ofemotional highs and lows. Oneminute you might feel great, and thenext you feel sad and tearful. Theirlife is changing, just like their body.

Teenagers need to manage stressand emotion but need all the supportof friends and family. But teens don'tmanage their emotions, theiremotions manage them.

The rise in teenagers' behavioralproblems earlier was confined to"non-aggressive" actions such aslying and disobedience rather thanfighting. The need is for thembecoming more responsible. We havehigh expectations with exam targetsbeing one of the. Then there is anattachment issue. We are not givingteenagers the emotional support theyneed, a hug and love. When they donot get it, they go to experiment withother things in life. While some maygo in for smoking, some go in forheavy drinking. Excessive drinkingcan have devastating consequencesfor young people. Some teenagers trydrugs to get high or to shut out thereal world.

Teenager still needs the support, understanding, and finally freedomfrom family, friends and othersaround them. Underneath the strangeclothes, make-up, hair or whatever itis you don't like, they are still thesame person. They may talk a lotabout freedom but they are stillmaking the transition to adulthood.

The list of things teens worryabout is long - appearance, popularity, lack of confidence, the future. Friendsare very important and rejection orcriticism by the peer group is hurtfuland leads to feelings of uncertaintyand lack of self-worth. At the sametime, they are put under increasingpressure to succeed academically. They want someone who listen themproperly. Listen twice as much asthey speak and try to understand thesituation from their point of view. Many teenagers crave forindependence. Independence is theultimate goal of adolescence. Theywant to strike out into the world andnot have to do what their parents want.

As expert sociologists andpsychiatrists have suggested, theyoung people, especially teenagers, are at a critical juncture of life. Theywant to see and explore the worldfrom their own eyes, rather thanbelieve what their parents tell them. They want to have a unique identityrather than become a part of thecrowd. They want everything and theywant it in a hurry.

Wanting more out of life is anatural reaction of young people. They can be understood and guidedonly if people around them react in amanner that is friendly and equal, rather than preaching andadmonishing.

Youth are the future. Handle themwith care.
