WINTER 2014-2015 AEGEAN NEWS 1

“Location, Location, Location.”One of the perennial dictums of selling is to position

yourself in the most favorable location the market has to offer. In the course of its development, Aegean has been adding key location after key location, key market after key market, and a product mix that responds to customer needs.

In retail, beginning from a few locations in Northern Greece, Aegean has expanded to cover large portions of the country, earning an enviable market share in a few short years.

Aegean lubricants are now ranked among the best available, whether for automobiles and trucks, industry, or the marine market.

In bunkering, Aegean has maintained a strategic program of global expan-sion that has earned it the title of largest independent bunker supplier in the world. This from a humble yet ambitious beginning in the Port of Piraeus, long before the current upgrading of the port that is jettisoning it to be one of the leading ports in Europe.

Currently, Aegean is opening new bunkering operations in Los Angeles, California, the Gulf of Mexico, and Hamburg, Germany—a major operational move designed to establish the Aegean brand as an indisputable market leader in bunkering.

As shipping continues to play a dominant role in transport, and regular-ly catalyze economic development in new regions, Aegean is proud to be a beacon in this global industry, reflecting the vision of its founder, ascribing international prestige and glory to the Hellenic Republic, and providing a sus-tainable livelihood to thousands of families throughout the world.

Location is indeed key. Equally important, however, is the commitment to excellence, the desire to succeed, and the knowledge that what you do has a positive impact on your environment, no matter what its location.

Participation at the Singapore International Bunkering Conference and Exhibition

The Singapore International Bunkering

Conference and Exhibition (SIBCON) is

held once every two years. It was another

successful event in 2014. Held in October

2014, the 18th SIBCON attracted over

1,600 delegates from all over the world.

During each SIBCON, the Maritime and Port

Authority of Singapore (MPA) announces

new initiatives concerning the Singapore

bunkering industry. This year some of the

main initiatives were:

• Additional incentives were introduced to help bunker barge owners installing mass flow

meters. On top of the $80,000 per bunker barge, barge owners can now apply for the Pro-

ductivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) scheme which is administered by the tax authorities.

• Singapore Standards SS600:2014 Code of Practice for Bunkering and the SS524:2014

Quality Management for Bunker Supply Chain has been updated to provide even better

transparency and give better confidence to customers lifting bunkers in Singapore.

• Another change that was announced is that come January 1, 2017 all bunker surveyors

will have to be licensed by MPA. Currently, bunker-surveying companies are accredited and

not licensed.

Colleagues from the Piraeus, Antwerp, U.S. and Singapore offices represented Aegean at the

conference. It was a fantastic opportunity for our customers to be able to meet with the team

and have a better understanding of the needs and expectations of both parties. It was also a

good time to foster even stronger relationship between colleagues.

Traditional Carols On December 24, 2014 the Pontian

Association of Korydallos, Nikea, sang

traditional carols for Aegean on the

ground floor of the company head-

quarters in Piraeus.

The Association’s children's dance

team gave a special touch to the fes-

tive atmosphere with the beautiful

spectacle they presented.

Aegean founder Dimitris Melissanidis

thanked the club for their kind perfor-

mance and wished everyone a Merry

2014 Energy Conference

B U N K E R I N G

The 2014 Energy Conference took place at the Ritz Carlton South Beach Hotel in Miami Beach,

Florida on October 26 - 28, 2014.

On October 24, 2014 Aegean hosted a cocktail reception at the Soho Beach House Roof

Top in Miami Beach, Florida. The event kicked off the annual Energy Buyer’s Conference, which brings together the traders, brokers and sup-pliers of the fuel oil business.

Regional Manager Christopher Roberts said: “As the first event of the weekend, our party is by far the best attended event.” In attendance were over 150 members of the Fuel Oil in-

dustry. Some of Aegean’s customers in attendance were from Royal Caribbe-an, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines, PBF Energy, Mitsui OSK Line, Hapag Lloyd, CSAV, Toyota and Marubeni. There were also numerous Bunker Brokers in attendance, including Bun-kers International, World Fuels, Glan-der, and KPI. In addition to the bun-ker players there were many oil traders at the reception. Aegean was well rep-resented by attendees such as Tony Vertommen from Rotterdam. Sal Dra-

go, Managing Director of Aegean Bunkering USA, was pleased with the outcome and stated: “During the weekend-long event, we got the op-portunity to sit down with some of the national oil companies, refiners and oil majors that supply our business. These meetings and the relationships we have formed have already added benefits to our bottom line.” Mr. Dra-go was also the winner of the World Fuel Services Tennis tournament that took place over the weekend.

Delivery of Barge PT40Aegean took delivery of the newbuild barge PT40 in Shanghai, China

on December 23, 2014.

The PT40 is an unmanned, dou-ble hull, tank barge suitable for the carriage of petroleum prod-

ucts and will reinforce the bunkering service operations of the Vancouver subsidiary, ICS Petroleum.

The barge was built at the Sinotrans & CSC Zijinshan Shipyard, under the rules and supervision of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and in accor-dance with the latest safety and envi-ronmental regulations of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Canadian Transport Authorities.

The 76-meter long barge can carry up to 4222 dwt at the maximum draft of four meters. Its 10 fuel oil and ma-rine gas oil tanks have a total capacity of 4,100 cubic meters.

The barge is equipped with Cum-mins diesel engines for electrical and hydraulic power generation, which are compliant with the current air pollution prevention requirements of MARPOL.

Three cargo pumps perform fuel oil delivery, each having a capacity of 400m3/hr, while two Emerson Coriolis mass flow meters installed near the manifolds measure loaded and deliv-ered fuel oil.

The barge may be either towed or pushed by a tug. Handling of the

barge will be made easier by the use of the 470kW bow thruster, which dras-tically increases the maneuverability when pushed.

PT40, with its cargo capacity and modern equipment, will join the Van-couver double-hulled barges fleet and will be a valuable asset to the station.

The Biggest Ship in the World

Its name is Prelude and it is not just a very large ship. Manufacturers are reluctant to classify

it as a "ship" because of its gigantic structure. The Prelude measures at 485 meters in length

(more than the height of the Empire State Building), 73 meters in width and has a displace-

ment of 600,000 tons of water, in other words that of six aircraft carriers. For its construction

260,000 tons of steel were used, which is more than that was used to build the World Trade

Center complex in New York. It is actually the largest floating offshore facility ever built. The

Prelude is currently under construction at the South Korean shipyard in Geoje, the island

where Samsung Heavy Industries manufactures large vessels and drilling rigs. The Prelude is

designed to take advantage of inaccessible or “stranded” natural-gas deposits, stranded be-

cause until recently they cost too much to make their capture worthwhile. It is estimated that

the Prelude will be able to produce more gas than what Hong Kong needs annually.

A New Era for the Port of Lavrio The Port of Lavrio has become a major attraction for many companies, after the completion of the modern new station of the port and because of its easy acces-sibility. The Port of Lavrio is a short distance from the Athens International Air-port "Eleftherios Venizelos" with easy access via the Attiki Odos highway and the suburban railway (after its impending expansion). The goal is to increase the outward orientation of the port and, through the creation of additional facilities, to strengthen the economy of the entire region. The president of the Port of Lavrio, Aristidis Vitsios, indicated that the redevelopment and maintenance of existing facilities, along with the completion of the Regulatory Plan by the end of the year, will allow for the overall use and development of all available land and marine installations.

A New 3 year-long HELMEPA Awareness Campaign Across Greece On October 29, 2014 the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) unveiled its revamped “Marine Environment - Shipping - Sciences” Exhibition in the Piraeus Port Authority’s Events Hall. The Minister of Shipping and the Aegean Miltiadis Varvitsiotis; the Chairman and Managing Direc-tor of the Piraeus Port Authority S.A. Yiorgos Anomeritis; Member of Parliament Anastasios Neratzis; the Vice Mayor for Culture of the Municipality of Piraeus Irini Daifa; the President of the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Masters George Vlachos; the President of the Greek Maritime Museum Anas-tasia Paloumbi-Anagnostopoulou; the President of the Museum of the City of Athens Antonis Vogiatzis; the President of the Hellenic Off-shore Racing Club John Maragou-dakis; stakeholder representatives, Hellenic Coast Guard senior offi-cials, HELMEPA members, teachers, Piraeus Port Authority Executives, members of the shipping Media and 30 students of the “HELMEPA Junior” Program from the 14th Pri-mary School of Nikaia, accompanied by their volunteer teacher Sofia Papadopoulou, as well as many other notable invitees, all honored the event with their presence. The campaign’s goal is to present important, new information on the oceans, the risks they face, as well as shipping and maritime related science. The campaign is funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and will be touring 14 cities throughout Greece over the 2014-2017 three-year period.

A Cruise Liner for… Ships It seems that the sea gives man the ability to make the impossible possible, and nothing is

quite big enough for the shipbuilding science.

Meet Dockwise’s cruise liner for ships. This incredible vessel is capable of carrying 22 barges

or even an oil rig. The Blue Marlin can carry up to 75,000 tons. This is truly the ship of all

ships. The largest bulk carrier in the world has four piers and 18 hulls and is 217 meters long

and 42 meters wide. The giant ship has a deck as long as two football fields. It reaches a top

speed of 13 knots and is powered by a giant diesel engine of 17,000 horsepower. For its crew

of 24 it must be like trying to navigate a floating building office complex. Since there is no

crane that can lift the oversized loads on this ship, the Blue Marlin submerges and it’s cargo

simply floats onboard. Then they pump the water out and loading is complete.

Dockwise has already announced that an even bigger ship is under construction that will be

able to carry 110,000 tons. The new vessel has already booked its first job: the transfer

of a giant oil rig from Korea to the North Sea over the next year. Shipyards in Korea have

undertaken the construction of the new vessel and the total cost would amount to more

than 300 million Euros.

New Guidelines for Fire Protection in the Marine Industry The risk of fire on board requires deep understanding of how critical the situ-ation is and improvement of facilities and safety management procedures for offshore and seagoing vessels. The new Lloyd's Register guidelines (Lloyd's Register Energy Guidance Notes) are targeted at designers, owners and operators of oil and natural gas equipment and dictate how they should evaluate the loads in an installation and how to protect people and equipment against various fire scenarios, such as leaks or ignition and fire due to electrical cables, diesel fuel or methanol. The primary objective of the new guidelines is to provide criteria and guide-lines for prevention, detection and protection. This way the shipping industry will be able to increase the level of protection against fires on ships, mobile offshore drilling units, mobile offshore units, offshore installations, and on-shore infrastructure.Source: Lloyd’s Register

Waterproof Glue for Ship Repair Inspired by Shellfish Inspired by the natural glue secret-

ed by shellfish, scientists at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

(MIT) have created a new strong

waterproof glue that integrates natu-

terial protein. Dr. Timothy Lu explains

that many aquatic organisms, such as

I n 2014 Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. completed the acquisi-tion of the U.S. East Coast bunkering business of Hess Corporation, a leading supplier of fuel oil in the USA. This acquisition marked the en-

trance of Aegean in the U.S. market and new bunkering stations supply ports with very heavy traffic, such as New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Charleston. This move also made Aegean dominant on the East Coast and allowed it to further expand its partnerships with customers from the USA worldwide.

In 2015 Aegean Marine Petroleum expands its bunkering operations with two new stations on the West Coast of the USA at the Port of Los Angeles and off the USA coastline in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as one more new station in Europe, at the Port of Hamburg in Germany.

About the Port of Los AngelesThe Port of Los Angeles occupies 69 kilometers of waterfront and ad-joins the Port of Long Beach. The port employs nearly 1,000 people, and is the number one container port and a leader in container volume and cargo value in the U.S. The Port of Los Angeles is recognized as a global model for sustainability, security and environmental responsibility. It is also an economic engine both regionally and nationally. Global trade and goods movement are Southern California’s strongest industries in terms of jobs and economic activity. The Port of Los Angeles powers these industries, handling almost a quarter of the cargo that enters the United States each year.

Over the years, the port has also built a strong reputation for envi-ronmental stewardship, carefully balancing growth with pollution-re-ducing measures.

Aegean Adds a Bunkering Location on the West Coast of the USA In the beginning of 2015 Aegean announced its new physical bunker operation in Los Angeles, California, USA. This exciting news represents Aegean’s first entry into the U.S. West Coast bunker market. Adding this location enhances Aegean’s North American footprint and will bring ma-jor synergies with the existing U.S. East Coast bunker businesses acquired from the Hess Corporation in late 2013.

Aegean successfully bid on OW’s Los Angeles assets in an auction in December and in doing so gained approximately 30,000 metric tons of bunker fuel and a storage contract for 60,000 cubic meters at the Vopak terminal in Los Angeles. Los Angeles and its sister port Long Beach are key ports in Pacific Rim trade and together form the largest container port in the United States with a combined volume of 14.6 million TEU’s in 2013. In addition, they also form the third largest bunkering port in the U.S. after Houston and New York.

Aegean is also delighted to welcome four new and experienced em-ployees, forming a well-respected bunker team in North America. They are: Keith Richardson based in the New York area; Martijn Kelderman, Cindy Bauer-Gomez and Ray Bacani based in Los Angeles.

Gulf of Mexico

Gulf of Mexico

Location: American Mediterranean SeaCoordinates: 25°N 90°WRiver sources: Rio Grande, Mississippi RiverOcean/sea sources: Atlantic OceanBasin countries: USA, Mexico, CubaMax. width: 1,500 km Surface area: 1,550,000 km2

About the Gulf of MexicoThe Gulf of Mexico, or Golfo de México in Spanish, is an ocean basin largely surrounded by the North American continent. It is bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the Gulf Coast of the United States, on the southwest and south by Mexico, and on the southeast by Cuba. The U.S. states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida border the Gulf on the north, which are often referred to as the "Third Coast" in comparison with the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific coasts, or sometimes the "south coast.”

The Gulf 's basin is roughly oval and is approximately 1,500 kilo-meters wide. It is connected to part of the Atlantic Ocean through the Florida Straits between the U.S. and Cuba, and with the Caribbean Sea (with which it forms the American Mediterranean Sea) via the Yucatan Channel between Mexico and Cuba. The size of the Gulf basin is ap-proximately 1.6 million square kilometers. The basin contains a volume of roughly 2.5 million cubic kilometers of seawater.

Aegean Expands its Bunkering Business into the Gulf of Mexico After the new bunkering station in the Port of Los Angeles, Aegean an-nounced the startup of a new physical bunkering location off the USA coastline in the Gulf of Mexico.

Adding this new location both significantly enhances Aegean’s North American footprint and will bring synergies with Aegean’s existing Ca-ribbean bunker businesses.

Aegean successfully secured the continuation of the time charter of the bunkering vessel Elisalex Schulte that will continue to supply bun-kers in the offshore bunker market in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico bunkering market has grown rapidly in recent years with major supply locations in international waters at either end of the U.S. Gulf Coast, off both Louisiana and Texas. This market has become a critical and timesaving bunkering option for vessels, particularly tankers that operate in this area or transit the Gulf of Mexico.

Aegean welcomes three new employees and a highly experienced and well-respected bunker team: Adrian Tolson and Georgia Kounalakis based in the New York area, and Clemente Ramos based in Panama.

HamburgAbout the Port of HamburgThe Port of Hamburg, or Hamburger Hafen in German, is an artificial port on the river Elbe, located 110 kilometers from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea.

The Port of Hamburg is the third busiest port in Europe (after the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th-largest worldwide. The location of the port is naturally advantaged by a branching of Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and trans-shipment facilities.

With total throughput of around 110 million tons, the Port of Ham-burg set a new record in the first nine months of 2014 and is growing rapidly into one of the most competitive ports in Northern Europe.

Aegean Launches Physical Supply and Marketing Operations in GermanyFollowing the recent expansion in the U.S. and in the Gulf of Mexico in January 2015, Aegean has launched physical supply and marketing op-erations in Germany. Operations include the physical supply of marine fuels and lubricants to all German ports and are based out of Hamburg, the second largest container terminal in Europe. To support its local German operations, Aegean has assumed the contracts for two modern, double-hull bunkering barges and approximately 20,000 cubic meters of on-shore storage capacity.

Aegean has also established a marketing and business development office in Hamburg for the sale and marketing of marine petroleum products throughout the Aegean network and to customers on a world-wide basis.

“We continue to execute on our strategy to opportunistically enter new markets, strengthen and diversify our operating reach, all while enhancing our ability to service our customers on a worldwide basis. As we embark on a new year we remain confident that we are well posi-tioned to capitalize on several risk-averse opportunities that will allow Aegean to increase the scale and efficiency of its global marine fuel logistics network, grow our customer base and enhance shareholder value,” an Aegean representative said.

Aegean welcomes five new and experienced colleagues that will form the new bunker team in Germany: Henning Haskamp, Jens Reese, Kris-tina Baliuleviciute, Raphael Giemsa, and Melchior Poszumski.

22 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2014-2015

Please provide us with a brief recap of the purchase of Hess by Aegean.Aegean purchased the U.S. Bunker business from Hess Corp on December 18, 2013. Hess was in the process of selling most of their non-core businesses in order to focus on de-

veloping their upstream business. Besides selling its bunker business, Hess also sold their retail gasoline and terminal operations businesses.

The Hess purchase enabled Aegean to enter into many of the key ports in the U.S. East Coast, such as New York, Phila-delphia, Baltimore, Norfolk and Charleston. As a major gate-way port to the U.S. East Coast for containership, cruise line and tanker traffic. NY is a key bunkering location for Aegean and provides the company with an abundance of opportunity.

How is the market in New York and the East Coast of the U.S. defined?

The greater port of New York is roughly defined to include many of the locations both within NY waters and in and around the port of New Jersey. In fact the main

container terminal, which serves the greater NY area, is actually in Elizabeth, NJ. Bunker demand in the Port of New York is estimated to be 3 million metric tons per year.

What are some of the challenges of working in this market? As a main gateway port for the U.S. East Coast, the port

of New York is far more competitive than many of the smaller ports. New York currently has between 6-8 bunker suppliers.

Managing Director of Aegean Bunkering USA LLC., Sal Drago, speaks with Aegean News about

the acquisition of the U.S. East Coast bunkering business of Hess Corporation by Aegean Marine

Petroleum Network Inc. and what this move represents for Aegean.

And how has Aegean responded in its first foray into the Northeast United States?

Buying any established business has its challenges. Many of the existing front and back office systems such as ac-counting, finance and trade entry provided by Hess had to be re-created at Aegean. Of course we had to re-introduce ourselves to our customers under a different name and re-establish credit lines. As a buyer of base fuels and blend components, we also had to ensure that our credit lines were intact. Luckily we retained nearly all of the former Hess Team, which enabled us to make these transitions quickly.

Today, as the price of oil is falling, we are again entering an uncertain environment. What do you see as the main issues arising from these trends?

As a supplier and buyer of fuel oil and blend compo-nents, falling oil prices will benefit Aegean in a number of ways. It reduces our overall capital requirements and is a financial boost to many of our customers in the way of a reduction to their fixed overheads. The last six months have seen bunker fuel prices fall by just over 50%. These lower prices may actually increase demand as many of the cost saving efforts that were put in place when the prices were much higher, such as slow steaming, begin to get re-laxed. Overall, a healthier shipping industry can only help key global bunker suppliers such as Aegean.

Aegean is expanding its operations in Europe, the West Coast, and the Gulf of Mexico. How do you see this strategy complementing its global presence, especially vis a vis the key NY market?

Expanding our presence in key bunker markets such as the U.S. West Coast and Gulf of Mexico allows us to better service our global customer base. We see a number of syn-ergies and cooperation within regions that can strengthen our brand. These include offering customers optionality on bunker lifting locations or developing economies of scale in our bulk purchasing program. These benefits can be easily recognized as we add the Gulf of Mexico off-shore activity with our other Caribbean businesses in Ja-maica and Trinidad.

Sal Drago talks to Aegean News about his background in the bunkering industry.

“I have been fortunate to have been around the bunker industry most of my working life. I started in the busi-ness in 1990 working for Texaco's Marine Marketing group where I was a bunker sales coordinator covering the U.S. East Coast and Panama. This gave me a strong foundation in the business and I soon started to get more interested in supply and blending economics and with that background helped to develop a hedging program. I was then sent to the Texaco London office where I worked on the trading desk in support of various bunker locations including Falmouth and Gibraltar. Next came a two-year assignment in Singapore to run the Asian region and help develop their trading business. This assignment lasted six years and after seeing the company through its merger with Chevron, I returned to New York as Global Head of Trading for ChevronTexaco. I was fortunate enough to move to Hess where I realized the potential to expand the fuel oil trading team and start a bunkering business. I am very excited to help build the Aegean Bunkering team with what I believe to be one of the best (and most efficient) teams in the industry.”

Tell us about your business, Mr. An-thoniou. What services do you offer? Do you employ any personnel? We sell Aegean fuel and lubricants, and car accessories. We do not employ any staff. From the beginning until today this station has been a family business.

How long have you been in the fuel busi-ness?This service station has been in opera-tion since the summer of 1987.

Aegean has recently celebrated 15 years

in the retail sector in Greece. How long have you been working with Aegean? We have been working with Aegean since 2009.

What made you choose Aegean? Our initial personal contact and the subsequent evolution of the company. The right people came together at the right time. There was good chemistry from the first moment. I think both sides knew each other well. When there is genuine and mutual respect, the economics are going to work out.

How is your collaboration with Aegean?I am going to insist on the importance of good personal relations. Even on the

rare occasion when problems arise, the people of Aegean are always present and willing not only to solve the prob-lem, but to make sure it never happens again. This creates certainty and boosts confidence in the service station owner toward the supplier. It also results in improvement and progress.

What is your relationship like with your customers? We know our customers very well. And they also know who we are. We maintain s relationship of mutual re-spect and trust.

Is there a lot of competition in your ar-ea? In what ways are you trying to boost your business?

Competition is indeed harsh. We operate our service station in a small town and there are many other service stations in close proximity, which of-ten operate under conditions outside the limits of fair competition. The combination of our good name in the market, the confidence inspired by the Aegean brand, the excellent quality of our fuel and the best possible price are strong incentives for our customers.

Do you feel that Aegean is helping you?The people of Aegean are a part of our family.

What would you like to wish Aegean for the New Year?I wish that Aegean continues to grow with steady and confident steps and as a family, as they have been doing so far. The sky is the limit. I believe Ae-gean can reach very high. After all, Aegean is still just a teenager!

Word=ContractPeriklis Filippidis, Georgiani, Kavala

Periklis Filippidis, a service sta-tion owner and a close associate of Aegean for the last 15 years,

speaks to Aegean News. This interview was conducted in early fall, 2014, be-fore Mr. Filippidis retired.

Well I am 70 years old. I have been a service station owner for the past 48, maybe 49 years. I have worked with many different companies, but the re-lationship and collaboration I had over the last 15 years with Iakovos (Melis-sanidis) have been second to none.

“In 2000 a gentleman came to my station. We sat and talked. During the conversation I understood it was Iakovos. He introduced himself to me. It so proved that we had two things in common: we were both of Pontian descent and we were both fans of the Greek association football club AEK.

“We talked a while and we came to an agreement. I never signed a contact and Iakovos never wanted to sign one either. It was a deal between Pontians and AEK fans.

“After that he visited me two or three times. The only thing he has promised and has not kept his promise so far is to come with me to a celebration in my village at the foot of Mount Paggaio.

“I will continue to run the service station until November (of 2014). The

only person I wanted to inform of my retirement is my dear Iakovos. He is a person close to my heart as a human being, first and foremost, and then as a businessman and an associate.

“I am looking forward to his visit and it will bring me joy just as I am happy to greet my own children.

“During the time I was working

with Aegean, other companies ap-proached me. Everyone got the same answer. I did not say a word. I'm a Pontian and the Pontian word forms a stronger bond than written contracts.

“I say ‘bravo’ to Iakovos. He is an honest, worthy, and pure man and a clean professional—at least as far as I am concerned."

The city of Kavala is the capital of the regional unit of Kavala and geographically lies

in Eastern Macedonia. Built at the foot of Mount Symvolo, Kavala is the third largest

city in Macedonia and is located 680 kilometers from Athens and 165 kilometers from

Thessaloniki. The smaller town of Georgiani belongs to the municipality of Paggaio, a

regional unit of Kavala. The capital of the municipality is Eleftheroupoli.

The Maritime Tradition Muse-um is a non-profit organiza-tion, which has not requested

nor received, during all its years of op-eration, any government subsidy from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense, or the Ministry of Ship-ping. The museum is maintained and developed with funds kindly offered by members of the Board, the Integrated Marine Education and Research Expe-ditions (INMER), and its sponsors.

The Museum of Maritime Tradi-tion in the few years of its operation has succeeded in differing from other Greek museums because of the great nautical relics from all over Greece that are displayed in its halls and also

because of the cultural activities the museum organizes that go beyond the typical museum practices. It is indeed a "living" innovative cultural institution.

An Eager TravelerThe museum’s official opening took place in the summer of 2014 in Pera-ma. However, the Maritime Tradition Museum is not limited to its premises. Instead, it travels where there are peo-ple who want to learn, see and admire

the Greek naval tradition. In collabora-tion with public and private institutions of the country and with the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), the Museum organizes exhibitions, the-ater performances and musical events

focused on the maritime tradition of Greece, entitled "Sea and Art." With its acquired expertise, the Museum of Maritime Tradition also participates with its exhibits in international and Greek exhibitions and events, so more and more people get to know about it.

A Graceful HostThe welcoming premises of the Mari-time Tradition Museum are open to organizations, Greek and foreign muse-ums and artists who want to present their work to the general public of Ath-ens and Piraeus. As a result, the Mari-time Tradition Museum has hosted ex-hibitions of foreign naval museums, the works of renowned artists, book pre-sentations, and theater performances related to maritime tradition.

Honoring the Greek naval culture, the Maritime Tradition Museum, founded in 1992 in

Piraeus, maintains as its main objective the collection, preservation, storage and display of

relics and other objects related to the maritime tradition of the Greeks.

We thank the Maritime Tradition Museum, and especially the Director, George Markogiannis, and Evangelos Kiriazopoulos for kindly providing the material for this article. For more informa-tion visit http://www.maritime-museum.gr/.

thousands of visitors every winter.

Must SeeFolk Art Museum The Museum of Folk Art lies in the town of Metsovo, housed in the renovat-ed Tositsa Mansion. It is a typical old Metsovo mansion and contains numerous items of great value.

Monastery of Assumption of the Virgin The Sacred Assumption of the Virgin Monastery is a unique monastery located in Metsovo and was built in 1754. It includes two-story cells, hostels, paved courtyards levels, frescoes, and icons of the 17th century as well as a bell tower with a bell that was constructed in Ioan-nina in 1870.

Garden of Averoff This is a micrograph of Pindos, as this beautiful ten-acre park is filled with trees and plants that constitute the entire flora of the region, such as pine, fir and beech. Besides the incomparable natural beauty, the park also includes a playground for young and older children and the church of St. George.

Metsovitikos River The Metsovitikos springs in the area of Katara and Anilio. Along the way the river encounters the Aoos Springs at the height of Chrysovitsi. The landscape is impressive as it is surrounded by high moun-tains and dense forests that are home to many species of fauna. Nature lovers will surely be impressed.

Lake of the Springs of Aoos The artificial lake of the springs of Aoos that was constructed in 1987 at the Politses plateau covers an area of approximately 8.5 square kilometers and lies at an altitude of 1,300 meters. While it was originally intended merely to generate elec-tricity, it subsequently became a particularly important habitat for the region. Guests can enjoy a tour of the lake by bike or horse.

Ski Resorts In the area of Metsovo there are two ski resorts that offer plenty of options for the lovers of winter sports. The first lies on the Karakoli hill outside Metsovo with two long runs of 1,000 and 1,200 meters at altitudes of 1,350 to 1,520 meters respectively, while the second is located at the Politses plateau with six long runs of 700 and 1,000 meters at altitudes of 1,430 to 1,620 meters.

Metsovo is a mountain town of Ioannina at an altitude of 1,160 meters. This traditional settlement lies at the eastern end of the county, close to the border with the prefecture of Trikala,

among the mountains of Pindos, the largest mountain range in Greece. Its inhabitants, mainly farmers, amount to about 3,000 and are mainly of Vlach origin.

The Name "Metsovo"There are several versions and stories on the origin of the name "Metsovo." According to one point of view the word Metsovo derived from the Slavic words "metska" (bear) and "ovo" (village), and means "the village of bears." However, Metsovo, in Vlach, is called "A-mitzio" meaning "in the middle of," perhaps implying the topographic position of "ovo" - the village - in the middle of the area.

WINTER 2014-2015 AEGEAN NEWS 29

Where is Antarctica?

Surrounded by the Southern Ocean, Antarctica is the southernmost

continent on Earth on the geographic South Pole. After Asia, Africa,

North America and South America, it is the fifth largest continent of

the world with an area of 14 million square kilometers. Antarctica

is 1.3 times greater than Europe and twice the size of Australia.

Approximately 98% of its surface is covered by ice, which is at least

one mile thick! The coastline has a length of 17,968 kilometers and

consists mainly of ice formations.

What is the climate like at the South Pole?

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and most windy continent on our

planet, and has the highest average elevation of all other continents.

Temperatures range between -80°C and -90°C in the interior of

Antarctica in winter and between 5°C and 15°C near the coast

during the summer months. The temperature in Antarctica has

once reached -93°C! However cold Antarctica may be, the risk of

sunburn in Antarctica is substantial as the snow surface reflects

almost all UV radiation.

Is there life on the frozen continent?

There are no permanent residents in Antarctica except 1,000-

5,000 scientists who visit Antarctica throughout the year and

stay at research stations that are scattered across the continent.

Only cold-adapted organisms can live in Antarctica, such as pen-

guins, blue whales, killer whales and giant squids to name a few,

as well as the famous imperial penguin, who is the only penguin

that reproduces during the winter in Antarctica. The climate of

Antarctica does not allow for extensive vegetation, due to very low

temperatures, poor soil quality, and lack of moisture and sunshine

preventing the growth of plants.

Why is Antarctica so important?

The ozone layer is located in the upper layer of the atmosphere

(stratosphere). The reduction in the thickness of this layer over

Antarctica, as a result of ozone depletion, is a very worrisome

phenomenon known as the "ozone hole."

The ozone layer is a filter that plays an important role in main-

taining the planet's ecological balance. This layer absorbs the

dangerous rays of the sun thereby regulating its temperature and

the general circulation in the higher layers of the atmosphere and

therefore the climate of our planet. The creation of the ozone hole

has negative effects on human health. It also increases the tem-

perature of the planet and negatively contributes to melting ice.

The cause of this phenomenon (mainly) lies in the excessive use

of chlorofluorocarbons (used in air conditioners and generally in

refrigeration appliances), as well as vehicle exhausts, and gaseous

waste from factories.

On September 16, 1987 the Montreal Protocol was signed, aim-

ing to phase out substances that deplete the ozone. So far all 196

member-countries of the UN have signed the Protocol. Fortunately,

the ozone hole has now ceased to grow. Nevertheless, this change,
