Carnivaliscomingandaseveryyearmanyniceandfunnyactivitiesare

taking place in several places aroundGreece. It is always a nice opportu-nity to take a small step out of reality,getdressedasyouwouldn’tdare todoinyoureverydaylifeandhavefunwithfriends, relatives or even people youmeetforfirsttime. 

ThisyeartheYouthCentreofKalama-tawillparticipate inmanyof theseac-tivities.WewillcelebratewithchildrenthemorningofTsiknopemptiandwithbarbecue the evening. We will be the“Demonicmade Angels” at Kalamata’sCarnival and we will visit Nedousa toattend the strangebut traditionalmix-tureofpaganandChristiancelebrationof “marriage”which is the outcomeofmanyinfluencesthroughtheaeons,cel-ebratinglove...withtheDionysianway! 

Carnival is also anopportunity to for-get the problems and leave a bit be-hindyourresponsibilitiesanddowhat-ever youwant! Is it?Canwe really dothisinaperiodthateverythingaroundusiscollapsing?Well...yesandno.Yes

because although the problemswe arefacingwehave tohave fun.Anyway itisintheDNAofGreekstodancewheneverythinggoeswrong.Andsuchwe’lldo...On theotherhandweneed tobeconsciousthatmanyofourfriends,rel-atives,neighborswillhavesobigprob-lemsthatitwillbeimpossibleforthemtocelebrateorevensmile.Forthatrea-sonweshouldnotforgetourresponsi-bilityasactivecitizens. 

Thisyearwecanwearsimplecostumesortomakethecostumesourselves.Themoneywewillsavewecandonatethemto an organizationwhich is facing theoutcomesofthecrisis,ortomakeagiftdirectlytosomeoneweknow...Spendalittle less timeforcelebrationandofferyourextratimetohelpsomepeopleinneed. 

I think that’s all fornow...haveanicemonthandwewillmeetattheactivitiesof the YouthCentre! Also don’t forgetthat at 15th ofMarch the celebrationsfor the 4 years of theYouthCentre ofKalamatawillstartwithmanynicesur-prises...tobeannouncedsoon!!!

OntheeveningoftheFri-day 15thof Febrary, the

Youth Center of Kalamataorganized the second meet-ingcalled“EVSCAFÉ” inor-der to share informationabouttheEuropeanprogram“Youth in Action” and moreconcreteabouttheEuropeanVoluntary Service (EVS) foryoungpeoplebetween18and30yearsold.

ThiswasthesecondmeetingaftertheonewhichtookplaceinNovem-ber,anditsmainpurposeistogivesomeusefulinformationandadvic-estowardsthenextdeadlineoftheprograminMay.SomeofourEVSvolunteerswhoarehereinKalamatathankstothisprogramcomingfromcountriesasFrance,SpainorMontenegro,explainedthebasicsoftheprogramandsharedtheirexperienceswiththeideatogiveamoredirectandclearerexamplesofsomerealprojectswhicharebeingrun-ninghereinKalamataattheYouthCenter,thehorseridingSchoolorKekykamea.

TheYouth inAction is aprogram inside theEuropeanCommissioninitiativesanditisspeciallyfocusedforyoungerswithlessopportuni-tiestohaveashort-term(2-6months)orlong-term(6-12months)stay

I’mfromPortugalandIamherework-ing in the Youth Center, through theprogram Leonardo da Vinci. I do ad-ministrative work, I teach PortugueseandIgosomemorningstoKikikameatohelpintheworkshops.

WHy did you apply to coMe to WorK in tHe youtH center of Ka-laMata?

BecauseinPortugalIwasunemployedsoIneededtogainexperiencetomay-be laterfinda job more easily…ThisisagoodexperiencebecauseIimprovemy language skills andbecause Ihavetheopportunitytoseecloselytheexpe-rienceof theYouthCenter,which is averyinterestingproject!

reallyspecialdayforeverybody.For theGreekpeoplefirst,because it’s thedayofCarnival, this important event.Butforthevolunteerscomingfromabroadalsobecause formost of us, this celebration isnew!CarnivalisnotcelebratedinthiswayintheothercountriessuchasSpain,France,Estonia,Slovenia…SoitwasveryexcitingforallofustofeelthisfestiveatmosphereinKalamata.

First,whenIwokeupinthemorningandopenedmywindow, I smeltmeat smokedeverywhereinthestreet!AndwhenIwenttotheYouthCenter,Imetatleast5nomadbarbecuesonsidewalks,withpeoplearound,eating,talkingtogetheranddrinking.Later in the afternoon, I went to PlateiaAmfeiaswithsomeothervolunteerswherewediscoveredthebigstageinstalledonthesquare.With the other volunteers, we at-temptthisniceshowwithalotofdifferentdancing groups, singers…, Kalamata is atownfullofgiftedpeople!!

Suddenly, the speaker announced in themicrophonethattheteam#35wasaskedtocomeonstage:theYouthCenterteam!!So,

after crossing tense eyeswithother volun-teers,wewentonstagetopresentourteamfortheparticipationtothetreasurehunt.Wedidnotreceivedanyspecialovationfromthepublic, or very-very strong applaudingbutanyway,ourteamgotourflagwithnumber35andwewere ready tocameback to theYouthCenterwherethebestpartofthedaywaswaitingforus.

Around8:00p.m.,westartedpreparingthefood,cooking…Andat21:30,thestartwasgiven.Then,thesmokingandgoodsmellingmeatwasarrivingendlesslyfromthebarbe-cueinstalledonthebalcony,peoplebroughtmore andmore delicious salads,winewasdrunkfasterandfaster…Inaword,Ididn’tsawthepartypassing,Ihaveeatensouvla-ki,pork,Greeksalad,russiansalad,toastedbread,homemadewine…,suchabigquan-tityoffood,everythingsotasty!!!

Afterall,Ifallintoareallyheavysleep,andwhenIwokeupthedayafter,myfirstthoughwas: I have tofind away to comeback toGreecenextyearforTsiknopempti!

First I visited Ulcinj andthe famous beach  calledBig beach, where I tookthepicture.Itisthelongestbeach in Montenegro, 13km long and with a veryfinesand,likedust.

From Ulcinj I continuedto go around the coastaltowns.Iwasmostdelight-edofbeautyofSt.Stephen,which is also called thepearloftheMediterranean.

teddy’s diaryWonderfulMontenegroAfter Podgorica, I continuedmyjourneytothenorthofthecountry.Theroadwasa littlebitscary,andpeopledriveveryfast,buttheviewisamazing.

Wherever you look you willseemountainsandrivers.ThebeautyoftheriverTaraleftmebreathless and jumping bun-geefromthebridgemademeexperience something won-derful you also can try everysummerfromthesamebridge.After adventure went to themountainDurmitor.

ImettwogirlsandIwentwiththem hiking. We climbed tothehighestpeakinMontene-gro, Bobotov kuk, also calledheaven bracket. From thereI could see a lot of Balkansmountains.

I visited a few other moun-tainsinMontenegro,asProk-letijewhere I took this beau-tiful picturewith horses, and

Everywhere I have been,they gave me a lot of raki-jaandfood.I triedahome-made cheesethatIhavenev-ertriedbefore,thenkajmak,that is alsomade frommilkandthatisoneofmanytra-ditional things in Monte-negro.Ofcourse,I triedthefamousprsutaandkacamakandsomeotherfood. Every-thing wasnjamnjam. 

IwillstayinMontenegrofewmoredaystoenjoythewon-derful nature and the clearair.

CuiSiNE of CulturES - Spanishdish-PAELLAthedishPaellaissaidtobeaperfectunionbetween2culturesfromSpain,

theromans,forthepanandtheArabs,whobroughttherice.Thedishwas developed in the Spanish city ofValencia.ThereisanoldstoryofhowtheMoor-ishkings’servantscreatedricedishesbymixing the left-overs from royal ban-quets in large pots to takehome. It issaidbysomethattheword paella orig-inates from the Arab word “baqiyah”meaningleft-overs.

Ingredients: • 2cupsshortgrainwhitericebyperson • 1wholechicken,cutintosections • 10-15saffronthreads(ifit’spossible!Orfood colorantinstead) • 1/2onion,cutinsmallsquaredpieces • 3or4largeripetomatoes,diced • peas • 1greenpepper,diced • 2garliccloves,pressedordiced • roastedredpeppers,sliced,togarnishontop • Extravirginoliveoil

Method:1.Inapan,putalittlebitofextravirginoliveoilandbrownthechickenonbothsidesduring6-8minutes.Addwaterandmakeitboiltomakesome
