The Bernier / Eliades Gallery has a history of showing art that is not characterised by

timidity and restraint. With the presentation of Lari Pittman, they follow their tra-

dition that dovetails with the attention the Gallery has had for recent art in Los An-

geles. Pittman’s work is characterized by the lusciousness of his colours, and by

intricate surfaces composed of layers of concurrent narrative and visual events. It

could be defined as the antithesis of Minimalism: it employs decoration as a visual

strategy, it feeds into the vividness of colour–although it is far from being decora-

tive work.

In an interview with the artist by Paul Schimmel from a catalogue published in

1996 by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Pittman is quoted say-

ing: "In a way, minimalism is Shaker, to the extent it says it is good to be simple and

pure. That informs how you view and value minimalism and reduction. So when-

ever you present an image that you have dolled or tarted up, an image too colour-

ful, too frosty, or whatever, it's harder for a culture to accord it a certain meaning".

It is work that can seem as the quintessential expression of an outdoors,

drenched-in-light contemporary urban context. It is fast-paced, full of visual infor-

mation, obsessive and deep, built equally with bricks from contrasting high-brow

and popular cultures. Like a harmonic case, it resonates to the many influences that

make up the very special texture of Los Angeles. It is light and joyful, and yet it re-

veals its dark and mysterious underbelly.

In structure, Pittman's paintings respond to a series of aesthetic criteria that are

articulate and complete: they have security of expression, a complexity and a vigour

that embraces both content and form. His paintings have a visual aggressiveness that

moves the viewer and that is coupled with his substantial ability to convey the im-

plications and the layering of human experience. Yet, Pittman's paintings are evoca-

tive, rather than direct or arbitrary.

On seeing them over the years (I’ve had the privilege to work on a show with

Pittman in 1996), I am left with the feeling that in its colours and shapes I recognize

the person who has painted them: one who subsisted as a whole, with the certain-

ties, the contradictions, and the baggage of emotions and thoughts that comprise a

single individual. Above all, I am drawn to Pittman’s work because it is beautiful,

and this attraction reminds me of how partial I am to beauty, how disarmed I am in

front of it.
