For quite some time I was thinking and rethinking about how it would

be like if Laconia had its own magazine. This blessed land deserves to

have a special place among our summer journeys and beyond. And

somewhere in there... this idea became a reality with the valuable as-

    sistance of Apostolos Romanos.

In just a few pages we managed to sum up the immense beauty of this

place and we kept alive our memories of these wonderful people. There-

fore, I like to thank very much all of you who helped us to make our

dream come true and I promise you that we will come back with even

more amazing pictures For you must remember that...

    The journey continues...

    Prefecture of Laconia

    is standing imperious the

    beautiful Sea - City

    ofMonemvasia.

    Next to the waves, under

    the hot sun, the birthplace

    of Giannis Ritsos seems

to glow as the "ship of stone"

    travels back in time, where

    Venetians and Ottomans

    wandered its cobbled

    alleyways.

    Monemvasia or poetic

    Monemvazia, Malvouazi

    for the Franks, Malmzy for

    for the local people, this

he only way for anyone who want to approach the oldtown of Monemvasia, is by following the small footbridge

that connects it with the new city. To this narrow strip of landowes its name because Monemvasia means "single entrance".The hospitable locals will gladly show you the way to theByzantine Fortress-City. As you enter the city a magical jour-ney through time begins. Castles, old manors, Byzantinechurches, thrones of emperors, cobbled alleyways. Shortlyafter our entry into the rock, as the locals tend to call Mon-emvasia, we find the home of the Greek poet Giannis Ritsos.Next, the main street with the small shops is leading to thesquare with the cannon and the church of Christ Elkomenos.Across from that is the Archaeological Museum, which has anextraordinary collection of architectural sculptures and pot-tery artifacts of old daily use. After the visit in the museum is

completed, the route to the Upper City begins. The visitorneeds nearly 15 minutes to get to the "Goulas", as the Uppersection of the city is called. There he will gaze the sea, as sheembraces tireless the walls of the lower city section. Thechurch of St. Sophia is standing out just few meters higher, which was built in the 12th century and is a rare example ofoctagonal churches in our country. The view from this point isbreathtaking, giving each visitor a unique, almost metaphys-ical experience. With the Myrtoan Sea in the background andthe smell of the sea as our companion, we are slowly goingdown to the wonderful small taverns of the Fortress.Inside the Fortress there are 40 churches. Some of these are:Panagia (Holy Mary) the Chrysafitissa, Panagia the Myrtidi-otissa, The Panagia the Cretan, and the churches of St. Niko-laos, St. Stephanos, St. Paulus, the church of St. Anna etc.
