A Message Father ªichael Wants to Share with Us

Let’s take Seriously the Work of Christ

Let’s take seriously our faith, our worship (the Divine Lit-urgy, the Sacraments, the Services, Church Attendance), Biblestudy, our participation in the mission and work of theChurch, i.e. missionary work, philanthropy (IOCC), our rela-tions with God and our fellow men and women. Let’s take allthese seriously, and not just for show. Not in order to impressother people, but for our own benefit.

What good does it really do us when we come to the lit-urgy a few minutes before the end, greet the member of theparish council at the candle counter with a smile, as if we aresaying, “You see, Lord, I did you the favor and came!”

Or, what good does it do us to take Holy Communion oneor two or, at most four times a year and think that we havedone what we must for our salvation?

And what good does it do us never to take Holy Commun-ion all our life, and frantically call for a priest to give us HolyCommunion when we are on our death bed?

Or, of what benefit is it to us when we give help to some-one reluctantly, in order to get rid of him/her instead of withlove and concern?

And how do we benefit when we become stewards (mem-bers) of a church not because we love the church but becausewe need some service? And when that service is over, weforget all about the church until we need it again?

All of these little things that we do are like the small fishwe catch in shallow waters. We must go out to the open seas,

work hard, labor, sacrifice if we really want to fill our netswith big fish, our heart with joy and our soul with salvation.

God asks for three things from us in exchange for all thelove and blessings that He has bestowed and is bestowing, onus.

A little time….A little talent….and A little substance! If we give voluntarily of our time, let us not think that we

can do the job that we have undertaken whenever and which-ever way we want to do it; but with the same devotion, dedi-cation and care as if we were receiving the greatest salary.

If we give voluntarily of our talent, let us not think thatwe can do the job sloppily and carelessly, but meticulouslywith the same craftsmanship and detail as if our life dependedon it.

If we give voluntarily of our substance, our wealth, ourmaterial goods, let us not think that we can give crumbs whenwe can give a whole loaf. Let us not think that we can insultthe other person, even God, by humiliating him or by givinghim something useless that we were ready to throw away. Wemust always give him something that we ourselves would ap-preciate if someone else gave it to us.This is what Christ teaches us: Don’t wait for the other person to love you beforeyou love him/her. You love first!

Don’t wait for the other person to help you in orderto help him/her. You help first!

Don’t wait for the other person to forgive you before

In Order to be Good Stewards of Our Orthodox Church of Christ…By Evagoras Constantinides

COMMUNITY NEWS - ∫Oπ¡OΔπ∫∞ ¡∂AFESTIVAL FINAL COUNTDOWN

June is finally here, and our festival promises to be bigger andbetter than last year!! But in order for the festival to be success-ful, EVERYONE must pitch in and do our part. So as I said backin January, the time has come for all of us to roll up our sleevesand volunteer during the 4 day Festival to help make it a spectacu-lar and successful one.

Again, we are asking for help to prepare and serve the food inthe outside tent area. This is one of the most profitable areas ofthe festival, and we need to serve the food in a timely manner. Inorder for that to happen, the outside area needs volunteers all fourdays. PLEASE contact me at 410-294-1253. Remember, our St.Nicholas Church is depending on us!

Church…definition of: 1: the entire number of people, allover the world, who believe in Christ and follow His teach-ings. 2: a local congregation of believers who worship as anassembled group.

At this time, we would like to say Thank you to our studentsand to their parents who continue to understand the importanceof bringing their sons and daughters to church every Sunday andto Sunday School. Without you, the people, coming to the Houseof God regularly espe-cially on Sunday’s,there will be noChurch. There will benothing.

We hope that eachof our students whohave been attendingSunday School andchurch regularly will beable to take with thema little more knowl-edge about their Or-thodox Faith. Througha bible story they readin class, a lesson theywere taught, or an es-say they wrote on aspart of the St. JohnChrysostom Oratoricalfestival and more im-portantly their partici-pation in the DivineLiturgy.

With that we, theSunday school staffwould like to congratu-late all of our studentsfor a job well done. Toour 10th Grade gradu-ates, we extend God’sBlessings and look forward to having you return in September tohelp out in Sunday school as aides.

Some of our 10th grade students were asked to write a shortessay on what they have learned during their 12 years in SundaySchool. Here are a few comments from some of the students:Niki Canning writes, “In my years of Sunday school, I havelearned the importance of respecting your faith, being proud of itand never losing your trust in God”. George Karagianopoulos

writes: “I have learned about the roots of our Orthodox religionand how it was started.” Gia Stavrakis writes: “I’ve learnedbible stories that have taught me different lessons on how I shouldhandle situations.

I am inspired by what the different Saints have accomplishedand why they were so great.” George Bouloubassis wrote:“Throughout my years in Sunday school, I have really been ableto gather a new look on religion as the church has taught me howto lead a meaningful life through God.” Lia Karagianopoulos

writes, “Praying con-nects me with God,giving me a sense ofsupport. Fastingcleanses my soul. Tak-ing communion makesme feel pleased that Itruly have My Lord inme. Simply coming tochurch makes me feelbetter about myself.”

Paraskevi Theo-haris says that “I havelearned that coming tochurch is essential forbeing a true Greek Or-thodox Christian. If itwasn’t for my parents,I probably wouldn’tcome to church as of-ten as I do. Because ofthem, I will most likelycontinue to come tochurch.” Kosta Pik-ounis writes “I havelearned the manyprayers like the “OurFather” and “TheCreed”. My parentsand grandparents haveinfluenced me to come

to church more often and without their love and them “pushing”me to come, I wouldn’t have come as often as I did. Patience andbeing respectful to my peers and family, just like Jesus did, aresome virtues that I learned in church, and Sunday School.”

We wish everyone Kalo Kalokeri…and we look forward toseeing you in Church on Sundays during the summer months, too.

Also, don’t forget to support our Festival on June 10-13th

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS: MOTHERS OF THE YEAREvery year the Ladies Philoptochos Society of Saint Nicholas

honors a MOTHER OF THE YEAR in Church. This year 3Mothers were honored. Here is how the President ofPhiloptochos, Mrs. Zoe Perdikakis presented it.

“The first lady that we are about to honor was born in a smallvillage in Chios. From a young girl she dreamed of traveling andpossibly making a life in the U.S.A. Finally, at the age of 21, withthe help of her aunt, she obtained a 6 month visa and came to theU.S. in January of 1959. Soon after she was pursued by a hand-some gentleman, and eleven months later in November, 1959 shewas married at Saint Nicholas Church. They established a wonder-ful life, overflowing with love and soon thereafter, this specialwoman became the amazing mother of four (4) and grandmotherof seven (7).

Most importantly, she always possessed a strong love for theGreek Orthodox faith and Saint Nicholas Church. She passed thisdevotion on to her children and grandchildren and raised them inthe church. They were all baptized at Saint Nicholas, attendedGreek School, Sunday School and are active members of theChurch participating in GOYA, Golden Coins, YAL, TeachingSunday School and volunteering at The Greek Folk Festival. Shehas been volunteering at the Festival for over 25 years, makingher known as the Loukoumades Expert.

Along with all the blessings in her life she has been dealt herheartbreaks, including the loss of her son. She accepts and bearsher cross with all that comes her way and with unwavering faith. When her grandchildren were asked to share special thoughtsabout their yiayia and why she is mother of the year this is what

was said….. “She is supportive, when they come home from ahard week at college she has their favorite comfort food waiting, the real Yiayia’s bakery is on Umbra Street. She is a best friendand confidant, from shopping sprees to parimies, she taught themto have faith in themselves. She is the epitome of strength, facinghard times with courage and continues to make the best of anysituation. They feel so very blessed to have her as their motherand Yiayia. She’s the rock of the family and the glue that keepsthem together. And her name is……. “Despina Cornias”2nd Mother of the Year Honored—Mrs. Elpida Birch (Birbitzaki)

She was born in a small village in beautiful Chios. She came toAmerican in the early 1960’s. Two years later, she married PeterBirch and they had one daughter. Today she is also blessed with 3grandsons. She is a devout Christian, wife, mother and grand-mother. She is a member of the Ladies PanChian Society and theSt. Nicholas Philoptochos. A noteworthy fact about Mrs. Birch isher poetry. She has honored us with her numerous poems that areread at the Mother’s Day Luncheon every year.3rd Mother of the Year Honored - Mrs. Sophia Stamidis

Mrs. Sophia was born in a village in Macedonia. During herearly years in Macedonia life was hard and difficult. In the late1960’s, they made the move to America and to Baltimore. She isalso a devout Christian and attends church regularly where shefinds peace and solace in the service. She has also lost a son notmany years ago but her faith keeps her strong. you forgive him/her. You forgive first!

Don’t wait for the other person to do good to you beforeyou do the same. You do the Good first! And as the Greeksaying goes: “Do the good and toss it in the sea (and forgetabout it)!”

And don’t ever expect anything for the good that youhave done.

Are you a true Christian? Take the initiative, do whatever youcan, as much as you can, with love and a smile and wait for re-payment, not from here on earth, not from unjust and evilmen….but from up high in the heavens, from the just Judge andthe Loving Father.

GREEKTOWN CDCGreektown has seen great progress over the past few months.

Athena Square began building another new row of town homesand Kettler, a Virginia based developer is ready to break groundas early as this summer. The Planning Committee has made head-way into creating new Greektown signage on the corner ofOldham and O’Donnell Streets that will help identify the neighbor-hood. The Greektown CDC has requested and received assistancefrom the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) toensure cleaner sewers. DPW has placed the Eastern Avenue sewerline on a bi-annual maintenance schedule to prevent sewage back-ups to our residents.

The Greektown CDC hosted a Baltimore Heritage Tour ofGreektown on May1st. Approximately 50 people enjoyed learn-ing the history of Greektown and our Greek culture.

The Greektown CDC will be hosting a community meeting onJune 15, 2010, 6 pm at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

Best Wishes to the St. Nicholas Church Festival Committee onthis year’s festival. We all look forward to a great time!!

Please check our newsletter or website,www.greektownmd.org, for more upcoming events. If you areinterested in volunteering or becoming a member of one of ourcommittees, please call our office.

Believe in your community!John E. Gavrilis, CEO
