But since you asked, I have put to-gether some basic cold-weather strat-

egies for keeping comfortable thiswinter.They’llwork finewhether youlive in an area with mild or brutalweather, so think about these ideas.

• Keep your furnace filters clean byreplacing themon a regular schedule.When the filters get dirty or plugged,it’s hard for that heated air to getinto your homewhere your want it.

•Don’tblockthermalmasslikeconcretefloors or heat-absorbingwalls that cansoakupthesun’sheatduringthedayandthenreleaseitintoyourhomeatnight.

•Closethefireplacedampertightlywhenitisnotinuse.Ihavereadthatkeepingthedamperopenisequivalenttokeepinga�8-inchwidewindowwideopeninwinter.

•Close yourwindows and latch themtokeepthemtightlyshut. If they’renotclosingtightly,useweatherstrippingandcaulkingaroundthemtogetatightseal.

•Dressfortheweather.Youcanfigurethatwearingaheavysweaterindoorswillgiveyouwarmthequaltoaboutfourmoredegreesofheatcomingoutofthefurnace–andthat’sheatyoudon’thavetopayfor.

• Finally, keep in mind that energyexperts recommend amaximum ther-mostat setting of 68 degrees inwinter.Every degree above that can add from3 to 10 percent to your heating costs.

It’s that timeof year again,when somanyof usmake aNewYear’s Resolution to goon a diet, get in shape andshed those extra pounds……andTHIS time we plan

Inastudyof60femaleswhowereatleast20%over-weight, the groupusinghypnosis lost anaverageof17 lbs,while the non-hypnosis control group lost only .5 pounds(Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986). In1996,ameta-analysisof18weightlossstudiescom-paring the resultsof addinghypnosis to variousweight lossinterventions, showed that subjectswhoseweight loss treat-mentwas supplementedwith hypnosis lostmoreweightthan90%of subjectswhodid not receive hypnosis.Moreimportantly, itwas determined that those receiving hypno-sis hadmaintained theirweight loss over an extended pe-riod. (JournalofConsultingandClinicalPsychology,1996.) Another meta-reanalysis looking at “hypnotic en-hancement of cognitive-behavioral weight loss treat-ments”, indicated that hypnosis increases the effective-ness ofweight loss interventions substantially over time.. (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996.) Atrulysuccessfulweightlossprogramshouldtargetbody-fat losswhilemaintaining or increasing leanmusclemass.The bodywill go through ametabolic shift, burningmorebody fat than it stores. Incorporate the following into yourlifeandyou’rewellonyourwaytoaleanandhealthybody.

1. Eat a variety of wholesome, natural, low-glycemic, high fiber food. Don’t skip meals.

2. Drink lots of pure, fresh water. Eliminate pop and sweet drinks.

3. Exercise! Breathe deeply. Find activities that are joyful, uplifting, and fun.

Farming organic grapes, for thedeLeuzefamilyofZDWines,wasnot their original intention, but

becametheirmethodbydefault.Whenaerospace engineerNorman deLeuzealongwith his former co-workerGinoZepponi decided to venture intowinemaking in theNapaValley, Californiain 1969, the distinction between or-ganicandconventionalfarmingwasnotapertinententrepreneurialdecision.ButbecauseofNorman’singenuity,pragma-tism and search for “zero-defects”, theeco-consciousprincipleswereadopted.ZDWineslocatedintherollinghillsideofSilveradoCountyinNapaValley,alsoin-cludesa3�-acre,organically-farmed,par-celintheCarnerosDistrict,hometotheoriginaloldvinesthatwereplantedoveradecadeago.WhenZDWinesexpandedin1996bypurchasingtheproperty,thelandwas already being organically farmed. Not onlywere the original natu-ral farming procedures surprisinglycost-effective, but they saved the vine-yard.Around 1985, Norman’s sons,Robert and Brett deLeuze, were on-board andNapa vineyards were un-successfully battling a phylloxera-binfestation.Phylloxerabugswill ravagea grapevine and can devastate entirevineyards.ButZD’svineyardssurvived,if not for an apparent “natural immu-nity” due to its authentic environmentdescribedbyBrettdeLeuze.The3�-acreparcel still bears fruit from its originalvines,a rarity inavalleywherecount-less vineyardswere forced to replant. “Organic growing is the signifi-cant reason, if not the reasonwhyour

vineyard survived,” productionman-ager,RobertdeLeuzesaid“Conventionalfarmingisoneofthereasonsphylloxeraspreadthroughouttherestofthevalley.”Organic farmingatZDWinesnotonlyincludesdiscontinuinguseofherbicidesand pesticides, but also allowing thenatural eco-system of the vineyard toflourish. Bright green crop cover padsthe rowswith vetch, oat and legumesprouts, providing a protective bar-rier for the soil, keeping itmoist andrichwith organisms. In one gram ofsoil,millions of live organisms can befound,many ofwhich are unnamed. By allowing the vineyard to takea natural course, only using organicpest control and using compost asfertilizer, ZD’s vineyards are strongcontenders to stave-off disease andbear fruit year-after-year, comparedtoNapa’s conventional counterparts. “It’s an interesting thingyoufind,”Robert said “youdon’t needpesticidesorherbicideswhenfarmingorganically.” In fact, Norman deLeuze, thefounder and father, realized thiswhenhefirstwasexperimentingwithhisnewvineyardandhadaninfestationofleaf-hopperbugsthatweresodenseonthevines and in the air, that you couldn’ttake a deep breathwithout inhaling afew.Norman,outofinexperienceatthe

time,hadthevineyardsprayed.Thebugsleft,buthecouldn’tgointothevineyardfor three days and it smelled terrible.And the bugs returned only amonthafter.Norman figured, “I’m not doingthat again”, and searched out naturalmeasuresofpestcontrolandfoundthatby farming the vineyard organically,along with nature’s hand, the in-fe s ta t ion dec l ined on i t s own. Rafael Llamas, ZDWines’ vine-yard maker was sold too.The soil,organically grown is humus and loosecompared to conventional farms.Ac-cording to Rafael, previously pluggingsoildowntherowswasdifficultandtime-consuming, now it “feels like butter.” ZDWineshasbeencertifiedorganicthroughtheCaliforniaCertifiedOrganicFarmersAssociation(CCOF)since1999,even though they have experience inorganic farming since thebeginning in1978.ZDisalsoacertifiedorganichan-dler,amoreuncommoncertification(oneoutofonlytwointheNapaValley)thatrequiresthatavineyardnotuseonecon-taminatedcomponentinthewinemakingprocess.ZD’swinesarecertifiedas,“winemadefromcertifiedorganicgrapes”,buttheyarenotcompletely“certifiedorganicwines”duetousingaminoramountofsulfites.Sulfitesactasantioxidantstopro-tectthewinesfromoxidation.Atthistimethereisnoknownsubstituteforsulfitesthathasthesameprotectivebenefit.ZDusesthelowestamountallowedwithintheirorganiccertification,100partspermillion, and still receives the benefits.

isveryemotional.Thereisnodoubtthatmostofushopetoeathealthier.Infact,nearly90percentofAmericansbelievethattheycouldmakehealthierchoiceswhenitcomestoeating.AstheNationalCulinaryVolunteerspokespersonfortheAmericanHeartAssociation,Ihavefoundthatthosewiththemostsuccesshavemadesmallchangesintheirdietandcookingratherthandramaticones.Theseareafewsuggestionsthatareeasytofollow,butthatcanmaketheroadtohealthiereatingalittlelessbumpy.

1. Beginwith seasonality – foods that are fresh and inseasondonotneedasmuchfat.Afreshgreensaladisdeli-cious tossedwith amixture of balsamic vinegar andwater.

2. Don’tbuyanyvegetablesorsaladgreensthatarepre-washed,trimmed,andthenchopped.Theyloseflavoriftheyarecleanedandchoppedbeforeyoubuythem.Iftheyhavenoflavor,youwillneedtoaddthingslikebutterandoiltomakethemtastegood.

AlthoughIGF-1levelsarenotactu-allyameasurementofgrowthhormoneitself, they can serve as an accuratealthough indirect indicator of growthhormone activity.This is because IGF-1 is formed in the liver in responseto the presence of growth hormone. Many physicians are likeme andprefer touseIGF-1asa test forgrowthhormone. It alsomakes sense becausealmostallofthebenefitsofgrowthhor-monestemnotfromthehormoneitselfbut from IGF-1. In adults, like growthhormone, the IGF-1 levels also signifi-cantly decreasewith age. Somuch sothatthevaluesintheaverageseventyyearoldmanarelessthanhalfofwhattheywerewhenhewas thirty-five.Happilyenoughhowever,whendepletedgrowthhormone levels are replaced, studiesshowthat it isquitepossible to restoreIGF-1levelstothosecommonofyouth. Practicallyspeaking,oftentheonlytrueway to diagnose a deficiency ofgrowth hormone in a personwith anIGF-1 level less than 230 ng/mlwhoalso has some of the signs and symp-toms of growth hormone deficiency istoperformaclinicaltrial.Aclinicaltrialmeans administering growth hormonefor6-9monthsandobservingwhathap-pens.A diagnosis of growth hormonedeficiency is confirmedwhen growthhormonereplacementtherapyresultsinasignificantincreaseinIGF-1levelsalongwith improvement in energy, strength,lean body mass, and bone density.Inthesecondpartofthisseries,Iwillbediscussinghowtotreatgrowthhormonedeficiencyonceyoufindoutyouhaveit.
