The longest riveris Haliacmon (about 297 km). The name is composite and derives from άλλας (sea salt) and άκμων (anvil).

In Greek mythology Haliakmon was one of the sons of Oceanus and Tethys. In Haliacmon you can do many sports like rafting.

Lake Pamvotis Lake Pamvotis has a perimeter of about 33 km, the length reaches almost 8 km and at its broadest point up to about 5.5 km, while the depth reaches on average 4-5 meters, while in some places even 13 meters

     The lake of Ioannina is a fine and delicate ecosystem, which belongs to the European Network of 

Protected Areas. It is also an important source of life. 

Ioannina is also a modern center in which international sporting events, including skiing, boating, canoeing-kayaking, etc. take place.

The Island    It’s one of the two lakes in the whole world which have an island inside them which is inhabited. The island is one of the greatest tourist attractions of our city.  You can visit it by taking the boat from the pier, near the castle. You also have to taste the island’s speciality which is fried frogs legs.

The cave of Perama It was discovered accidentally in 1940, during the Second World War. It consists of several successive halls and corridors adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and impressive columns.

Zagoroxoria     Zagori is a network of 46 beautiful villages with calm, villages with incredible views and villages in the forest.

Metsovo     Metsovo is a mountain town at an altitude of 1,160 m. There is also an organized ski center which, together with the picturesque 

landscape, attracts many visitors.

Culture and museumsThe ancient theatre of

Dodoni

Dodoni was an oracle devoted to a Mother Goddess identified at other sites with Rhea or Gaia. Here, however, she was called Dione, who was joined and partly replaced in historical times by the Greek god Zeus.

Archaeological museum

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina  contains many artifacts from the 

surrounding area such as Palaeolithic tools, the ruins of Dodoni and ancient 

cemeteries such as Vitsa and the Oracle of Acheron. The museums also has many inscriptions, headstones, and a collection 

of coins.

The town clock of 1905The  clock  of  the  square  was  erected  in 1905 by Osman Pasha and manufactured by architect Pericles from Ioannina. It was built  to  mark  the  thirty  years  since  the enthronement  (1876)  of  the  then  Sultan Abdul Chamit B.

The Pyrsinella mansion

The Pyrsinella house is one of the last surviving mansions in Ioannina. The house is located in the heart of the old commercial center of the city

The Kaplaneios School

Ioannina became the most important center of the Enlightenment along with Istanbul and centers of Greeks abroad in Vienna and Bucharest. The Kaplaneios School was founded in 1797 by the national benefactor Zois Kaplanis in the location where Maroutsaia School used to be.

Zosimaia SchoolThe Zosimaia School was one of

the most important Greek educational institutions during the last period of Ottoman rule

(1828-1913). The Zosimaia School was founded in 1828 with funding provided by the

Zosima brothers.

The Zosimaia Central Public Historical Library of

Ioannina The Zosimaia Central Public Historical Library of Ioannina was founded

in 1828 by the Zosimas brothers. Its main collection includes books of all subjects and comprises literary books, Greek and foreign, children's books, knowledge books, a collection of antique and rare items, magazines, discs, CDs and DVDs.

Promaxonas Litharitsia is built on the homonymous small hill,

located a short distance southwest of the Castle.

The Castle’s HistoryThe castle of Ioannina was

built in 528 A.D. inthe frames of Emperor Ioustinianos's plan forthe fortification of the

Byzantine state.

The Aslan Pasha Mosque

was built in 1618 in

the city's castle, replacing the

Church of Saint John.

Its Kale

Its Kale is the Turkish phrase for “His Castle”. It is the

southeast citadel of the castle of Ioannina, where Ali Pasha

built his palace.

Cook House

It was originally built in 1815-1820 and it was used as a cook house for the palace.

Remains of the palaceThe large tower in the center of the Acropolis is probably the only trace of the fortifications of the Byzantine period. It is part of the original smaller fortifications of the citadel. On top of this, Ali Pasha built the main body of the palace.

Byzantine MuseumThe building was built in 1958 by the Greek Army to serve as a royal pavilion. Today the first floor houses offices, and the ground floor is a museum. The museum contains collections of the Early Christian and Byzantine period.

Fethiye MosqueIt is located in the place which

was considered the position of the Byzantine cathedral of Archangel

Michael, patron of the city. After 1430 the first wooden mosque was built with the

nickname "Fethiye Mosque" (mosque of the conquest).

In 1611, after the failed revolutionary movements of Dionysios the Philosopher, a mosque made mostly by lead was erected. In 1795, Ali Pasha rebuilt it, giving it its present form.

Ali Pasha’s tomb It is located in front of the

Fethiye Mosque. Here the headless body of Ali Pasha was buried in 1822. In the same grave Ali’s wife, Um Gkioulsoum Khanum, had been previously buried, and later one of his sons was buried here.

The Soufari Sarai Soufari Sarai was used by

the Ottomans as a cavalry school. It was built between 1815 and 1820 by Ali Pasha. It has been restored, and is used by the State Archives.

Museum of Greek History Paul Vrellis

The Pavlos Vrellis Greek History Museum is a privately owned wax museum. It is the best known wax museum in Greece. The museum hosts 150 wax models in 37 themes, inspired by various events from Greek History.
