Science fiction is humanitys crystal ball, and many inventions have originated from science fiction. Flip phone from Star Trek communicator, a show that began 40 years ago. Submarine from Jules Vernes 2000 Leagues Under the See written over 140 years ago. Modern Ball Bearing, thought of by Leonardo Da Vinci, and used in his drawing for his idea of a helicopter, over 500 years ago. Science fiction has cult followings, so any popular concept brought to life should garner a large amount of revenue.3

The hoverboard, a science fiction concept, essentially a skateboard without wheels that hovers, was made popular in Back to the Future 2 and 3 in 1989, over 20 years ago. So the hoverboard definitely falls into the cult following category, with appearances in many other media, such as the 1998 made for TV movie Future Sport and the Playstation 2 EyeToy game AntiGrav made in 2004.4

Our goal is to produce a hovercraft as close to the one of science fiction as possible. Using the 5 criteria listed here, our design comes the closest to Martys Board. The Alura Airboard actually has a friction wheel beneath it aiding in traction. And it has a handle bar.Future Horizons features many hoax, and there site is down, so their hovercraft may not be real. Also it uses a wireless remote to steer the fans behind it.The typical hovercraft shares only the no wheels fact with the hoverboard. Perfomance and Usability differs.Our design will attempt to mimic Martys Board, except for it probably being too heavy to carry, unless we make it out of composites (like we hope to).

The above concepts are also considered design requirements8

ANALYSIS

Construction and materials:The board will be constructed out of 6 plys of 1/8 Baltic Birch. Using Baltic Birch will allow for a sturdy board, but still some flexibility. Titebond 3 will be used to glue the laminates together. Titebond 3 provides water resistance and a superior bonding strength. The 6 layers will be compressed together with a jig built specifically for shaping this board. Size:The board will be 5 feet long and an estimated 2.5 feet wide at the widest point. The shape is still under determination. The board will be approximately 3/4 thick. Weight:The board will be approximately 25lbs. Process:The first Baltic birch prototype will be made using a jig and purpose built clamps. Using this setup will provide the concave needed in the board. If a composite board is chosen we plan on building a male mold and using a vacuum press. Using a vacuum press will allow for even distribution of pressure of 14.7psi over the entire board. This will prevent air bubbles and provide a uniformly bonded board. 3-point Bending Analysis
