From the Desk of Fr. Christos

Our October 2016 Message!!!

“Church Attendance is Vital to the Spirituality of the Believer

and the Whole Body of the Church”

Why is there Church?

Hebrews 10:19-25

A young man and friend were driving to a football game when they were hit by a semi. Both were knocked out

and the car was thrown into the ditch. When the driver woke up, he realized he wasn’t too badly injured, but his

friend was bleeding and in serious trouble. He knew his friend would die if he didn’t get help soon. He pulled him

from the wreckage and up to the top of the hill. Once there, he saw a building with a sign in front advertising a

doctors clinic. He carried his friend there and banged on the door until a man answered. The man asked, “May I

help you?” In disbelief the driver said, “Can’t you see my friend is in bad shape? Please save him!” The man at

the door said, I’m sorry, I can’t help you. I quit practicing medicine five years ago.” The driver looked at the man,

his friend, the sign, and back at the man and said, “If you aren’t going to help anyone then YOU SHOULD TAKE

DOWN THE SIGN!”

Millions of people today are broken and bleeding. The “Accidents”, the spiritual accidents continue and are

multiplying. The robber(s) (evil one) attack and leave half dead many in the deserted roads.” In front of our

churches, “INNS”, we advertise a place of healing but are we practicing what we advertise? We need to take a

long hard look at what we do as a body of believers, because we need to either practice what we say…or take

down the sign!

Let me ask you! What is the Church? How do we define Church? I can tell you what Church is not! The Church is

not a human institution. It does not have her own agenda or set her own goals. The Church is not an independent

entity, surviving on strength in numbers.

No, what the Church is, a divine institution, a body called into a special relationship with God, her head. James

1:27 says we (the church) are called to be holy and blameless before God and uncorrupted by the world.

When we gather with youth, in camps or meetings at church, and we have discussions on various issues,

sometimes the following question comes forth! “Why is there Church” and “Why are we supposed to go to

Church (in the minimum) every Sunday?” These are big questions and I am going to try to answer them. To

answer the second question first, let me ask you another question. How many here (who are reading this message)

feel the Bible is the infallible, undisputed Word of God? Church attendance is a priority because God commands

it. At the time the book of Hebrews was written people – faithful – felt like too many do today – that they could

worship God just as well at home or at church. Sure, we can pray at home and we must, but why would God put

this command in the Holy Bible if He didn’t want us to follow it? God does not give useless commands in order

to take our freedom away. Whatever God or a loving Father command is for our benefit.

As it says in Psalm 78, we need to impress upon the next generation the importance of Church attendance and

what it means to worship God. Vs 5-8 “For God established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel,

which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to

come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children,

that they may set their hope in God, and (all those who are broken and bleeding) not forget the works of God but

keep His commandments. And may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation. A generation

that did not set its heart aright and whose spirit was not faithful to God…”

(Please parents, read the whole Psalm 78 at home.)

Are we as parents and role models, developing in our children a positive attitude toward attendance and worship,

and prayer, and almsgiving?

What about when our kids tell us they don’t want to go to school, to the doctor/dentist? Or they don’t want to eat!

Who is in charge here anyway? Kids, don’t necessarily want what’s best for themselves, so we make them go

anyway because they NEED to! Same thing with Church. WE NEED to be in Church, children and ADULTS!!!

Continued...

And think about it. If your son or daughter want to learn to swim, would you have her take a correspondence

course in swimming? Would you teach your child to drive by just having him read the owner’s manual? No!

TO learn to swim you must get in the water and to learn to drive you need to get behind the wheel and drive!

You have to show up and participate! To get off the spiritual milk ad get into solid food you need to put into

practice what you learn inside the Church, which means ATTENDING CHURCH. (Here we will not

address the issue of preparation for that attendance and receiving the Holy Eucharist.)

Another reason for attending Church is safety. 20% of all fatal accidents occur in automobiles. 17% of all

accidents occur at home. 14% of all accidents happen to pedestrians. 16% of all accidents happen in planes,

trains, or boats. 001% of all deaths occur in church and these are related to previous physical disorders.

Therefore, the safest place to be anytime is in Church. GO to Church! It could save your life!

Now, besides needing someplace to “attend Church”, we ask the question, “Why is there Church?” Which is

another way of asking, “What is the primary focus of Church?” (We are speaking in plain language here. No

heavy theological terms) Is it worship? Fellowship? Teaching? Show Off our new clothes? Potluck Dinners?

Meet well-known members of the congregation?

I read this story. A woman living in Washington DC belonged to a Church frequented by the President. One

day she called the Pastor and asked him if he expected the President to be there on Sunday. He replied, “I

can’t promise that but I expect God to be there and I believe that should be sufficient incentive for

attendance!” (the Pastor was very polite).

Do you desire to meet Jesus and eat at His table? Come to Church. The meal He offers in Church you

cannot provide at home.

There is one other important reason why there is Church. We, as the Church, members of Christ’s

resurrected body, are called to reveal God’s Glory to the world. St. Paul writes, Ephesians 1:12 “So that we,

who were the first to set our hope on Christ might live for the praise of His glory.” It is through our lives

(v22 “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil

conscience (strive for holiness) and our bodies washed with pure water.”) It is through our lives that His

glory will be shown to the world.

St. James says, “show me your faith through your deeds.”

Suppose a scientist discovers a cure for AIDS. But before it can be made available to the world, other

physicians must be made aware of it and trained to use it. The cure is there but one person can’t do it; an

army of doctors must be the agents to take it to the world. That’s exactly what the Church is to Jesus. All

people and nations are to be reconciled to Jesus, but, before that can happen, they need to know who Jesus

is. Christ is the head, the Church is the body. That is our job as a Christian Community. We are to be the

hands to do Christ’s work, feet to run His errands, and voices to speak his word. Some are called to be the

voices, some the hands, some the feet. Evangelism is doing Christ’s work, regardless of how we accomplish

it (as long as it is proper and right). Let your light shine says the Lord!

So, listener, “Why is there Church?” can be answered many different ways. There is Church because we are

a place of refuge and healing. There is Church because we need the teaching to grow spiritually, to get off

the milk and onto solid food. We need the teaching to stir up our inner field, heart, so Christ can place His

seed and grow. There is Church because we need the encouragement and support we get from Christian

fellowship. There is Church so we can go out and bring the message of Pentecost to the world, to reveal

Christ to the world. We need Church so we can gather together as one body – united in love – to worship the

God who created us. But mainly there is Church because God said so! And we need to be obedient to God,

because when we obey God, we remain in paradise i.e.-in His grace. When we are centered in God’s grace,

everything else falls into place. And what better place to be than, in God’s grace, in the Church, as His

Church.

Please keep these words in mind the next time you hear, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of

God, the Father and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you.” Amen.

Holy Trinity Family,

A new Ecclesiastical Year has begun and thanks to many of

you who attended the Welcome Back Picnic.

Please review the Church calendar and enclosed

announcements for the Delaware Valley Goya Kickoff

Weekend Retreat in Lansdale, Pennsylvania (October 14-16),

Holy Trinity’s 9th Annual Golf Outing (Thursday, October

20th) and the Philoptochos Bid-N-Buy (Friday, October 21st)

and Wilmington will host the Delaware Valley Joy/Hope

Mission Project (Saturday, October 22nd).

With the benefit of favorable weather this summer, our Church

renovation project maintained a favorable pace with great

efficiency. We finished all phases of the Church facades with

few surprises and the work is now concluding with the Great

Bell Tower. The refurbishment of the steel supports to Bell

Tower went well, but not without challenges, and the

underlying deterioration was significant. Also, much of the

brick on the tower was compromised upon close inspection

afforded by the scaffolding. The level of deterioration was far

worse than expected and new material was poured/cast on the

Tower to replace block that had eroded beyond recognition.

Needless to say, this work was timely and desperately needed.

The structural deficiencies have been addressed and the Tower

is safe. The remaining work should be concluded before the

harsh weather sets in and the scaffolding will be coming down.

A major project that we had initially designated to take years

will have been completed in months. At the most recent

Progress Meeting, I requested a representative from the

contractor directing the work as well as the engineer to be

present at the Fall General Assembly to provide the

Community a detailed recap and Power Point Presentation of

the restoration work. I hope you will be present for this.

With the end of summer, we are also fortunate to see the return of

families from vacation and the church filled with Sunday School

students. I want to thank all of our returning Sunday School

teachers for their dedication. The topics for this year’s Oratorical

Festival have been posted and our seventh through twelfth graders

will start preparing for another strong showing from our Parish.

Please, do your part, and bring your children to Church.

Remember, beginning October 2, 2016, the Orthros will

start earlier at 8:30am and therefore we should all try to be

in Church for Divine Liturgy by 9:30am.

This year, we will be initiating and following through on a long

overdue opportunity -- the Boines Scholarship Fund. We

acknowledge the generous contributions of the Boines Family

decades ago that has made this opportunity possible. Please

review and study the enclosed information regarding this

unprecedented scholarship opportunity for the youth of our

Community. Now, in addition to spiritual growth and

enrichment, bringing your children to church (in a timely

fashion) and encouraging their participation in the various

activities, will qualify them for a generous scholarship.

Finally, Stewardship Sunday will be held November 13, 2016 and

you will be receiving your 2017 Pledge Card shortly. You do not

need to pay your Pledge for 2017 until 2017 but your card should

be submitted on Stewardship Sunday, our day to recognize the

role of Stewardship in the parish and be grateful for the pledges of

our community members for the upcoming year.

Respectfully,

George G. Rassias

Holy Trinity Food Pantry

HUGE NUMBERS SEEN AT FOOD PANTRIES

An article appeared in the News Journal from the Lutheran

Community Services stating that “It’s seeing huge numbers at its

Food Pantries, particularly at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church at 13th

& Broom Streets, where as many as 180 families a day are seeking

food.”

Our parishioners will be pleased to know that Holy Trinity has been

delivering food to St. Stephen’s for over 12 years and that we have

been an important part in their food program. Only with your

continued participation can Holy Trinity continue this mission.

Please continue to share your blessings with the less fortunate - who

are increasing daily. Drop off any non-perishable food anytime you

come to church or during office hours - 9am-4:30pm.

Always needed are:

Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, Jellies, Peanut Butter, Pasta Sauces, Mac & Cheese, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, flour, sugar, etc.

Any food that will not spoil.

If you are unable to bring food in and would like to help ~ you can make a monetary donation to the

food pantry and they can pass your donation along or shop for you!

September 12th at

The Emmanuel Dining Room East

155 men, women and children enjoyed a nice lunch on Monday, September 12th, with Stephanie

Frangia Baker generously donating the meal. Stephanie sponsored that day in loving memory of her

mother Diane Frangia, and her Aunt Mary Manolakis. Stephanie will continue to donate the meal

every September in honor of her mother and Aunt, as this was the month they always sponsored.

Thank you very much Stephanie! Tina Ganiaris worked in the kitchen that day.

We welcome a new sponsor and host to the dining room for Wednesday, October 12th.

We sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who generously give

their time and charity to this dining room and ministry!

All are welcome to join to help serve in October and on the 12th of every month! Various groups and individuals from our church generously donate the food and host the luncheon

meal at the 3rd and Walnut St. location on the 12th of every month throughout the year, as we have

for 36 years now! New sponsors are needed to fill a few months, so if you would like to become

a part of this worthy service project with your family, friends or church organization,

please contact Nikkie Tsakataras at 655-2252 or Tina Ganiaris at 764-2183 for more information.

welcomes you to join us for our next

gathering... We will meet again on

We hope you will join us for a fantastic year!!

Third Annual Empty Bowl Dinner

St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church’s is hosting an Empty Bowl Dinner on Wednesday, November

2 at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. An Empty Bowl Dinner brings together restaurants, artists, bakeries,

faith communities, and neighbors to raise funds to help those in need. For the cost of a $20

ticket, participants enjoy delicious donated soup and bread and get to pick out a beautiful bowl

made by a local artist to take home, while raising funds for Family Promise and the food min-

istries of St. Stephen’s.

Family Promise of Northern New Castle County has an interfaith Hospitality Network of 15 host

churches which provide shelter and meals for homeless families. The families stay in churches

during the night, and receive job and educational assistance during the day.

The LCS Food Pantry at St. Stephen’s is one of the largest food pantries in the state of Dela-

ware, providing emergency food provisions for 800 families each month. A weekly produce

distribution offers food to another 125 families. St. Stephen's would like to expand services to

be able to host community meals and cooking skills classes. Proceeds from the Empty Bowl

Dinner will be split between Family Promise and the food ministries of St. Stephen's.

Damon Cozamanis, son of parishioner Steve Cozamanis, and grandson of Olympia, President & CEO

of… ChiroFusion Named to Inc. 500 List of Fastest Growing Private Companies in America

WILMINGTON, DE, August 17, 2016 (Newswire.com) - ChiroFusion, Inc., the nation’s premier

provider of affordable, cloud-based EHR software for chiropractic professionals, announced it has been

named to the 2016 Inc. 500 list recognizing the fastest-growing private companies in America.

ChiroFusion secured the #257 spot on the prestigious list with a staggering 1,545% revenue growth in the

past 3 years.

With the announcement of its inclusion on the high profile list, ChiroFusion takes its place among the

most elite businesses in the country, including Microsoft, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, Pandora, Timberland,

LinkedIn, Yelp, and Zillow, who were previously named members of the Inc. 500 and today are

recognized as industry leaders.

The Wilmington, DE based company, recognized for its highly affordable and reliable cloud-based

chiropractic software and exceptional customer service, has partnered with chiropractors throughout the

country to help them improve patient care and increase profitability.

“We are honored to be named to the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies,” said ChiroFusion

President and CEO Damon Cozamanis, DC. “This recognition and the success we have had in such a

short period of time reaffirms our strength as a company and is a testament to the tremendous hard

work and commitment from each and every employee, and to the loyalty of our satisfied clients.”

Cozamanis adds, “We would like to thank all of our clients who have been and continue to be

supporters of ChiroFusion. It is because of you that we can be included on this list."

The 2016 Inc. 500 ranks companies according to percentage revenue growth from 2013 to 2016. To

no less than $2.5 million in 2016. Additionally, companies have to be U.S.-based, privately held, for

profit, and independent. ChiroFusion will be recognized among the other Inc. 500 honorees at the 35th

Saint Gerasimos of Cephalonia / October 20

Reading:

Saint Gerasimus was from the Peloponnesus, the son of Demetrius and Kale, of the family of Notaras. He was reared in piety by them

and studied the Sacred writings. He left his country and went throughout various lands, and finally came to Cephalonia, where he restored a certain old church and built a convent around it, where it

stands to this day at the place called Omala. He finished the course of his life there in asceticism in the year 1570. His sacred relics,

which remain incorrupt, are kept there for the sanctification of the faithful.

Apolytikion in the First Tone O believers, let us praise the protector of the Orthodox, The God-bearing miracle-worker lately appearing to us, the incarnate angel,

divine Gerasimos. For he has rightly received from God the ever-flowing grace of performing healing. He strengthens those with diseases and he heals those with demons. And therefore

he pours out healings to those who honor him. Kontakion in the Third Tone Now doth Cephalonia, with sacred songs of thanksgiving, call upon the multitudes of all the

Orthodox Christians to extol the boast and glory of Orthodoxy, the divine and great Gerasimus, who is truly her deliverer and champion, who doth preserve her from all the

harm of her foes.

Longinus the Centurion

Reading: This Martyr was in the service of Pontius Pilate at the time of Christ our Saviour's Passion. While standing guard at the Cross

and beholding the earthquake and all that came to pass, he cried out with fear, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matt. 27:54). After

the Resurrection, he forsook the military and departed for Cappadocia, his homeland, where he preached Christ. By the agency of Pontius Pilate, Tiberius Caesar had him arrested and

beheaded. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our

immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly

destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Kontakion in the Fourth Tone With great joy the Church of Christ today rejoiceth on the festive memory of blest Longinus, the all-famed and godly prizewinner. And she doth cry out: O Christ, my foundation and

might art Thou.

Ο Winston

28th October, 1940

Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas

15th August, 1940. While the Hellenes were observing the Dormition of Virgin Mary, an Italian

submarine, without any warning sank the Greek torpedo destroyer Elli, which was docked in the harbor of

the island of Tenos. This was the prelude of the attack against Greece of the fascistic Italy, ally of the

nazi Germany. The rest of the Western Europe, except for Sweden and Finland, who were allies of

Germans, and Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland, was under the German yoke. Turkey was and

remained neutral until 10 days before the end of the Second World War at which time it joined the

allied forces. At 3 o’clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940, the ambassador of Italy in Athens gave an ultimatum

to the prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, demanding permission for the Italian army to go

through Greece on its way to Middle East. The Middle East oil was necessary for both Italy and Germany

because they did not have sufficient energy resources. Greece’s prime minister answer was

“NO” (“OXI”). Italy’s dictator Mussolini threatened to send 8 million bayonets, one for each Hellene, to

occupy Hellas. Only two hours after the ultimatum to the prime minister, the Italian troops attacked

Hellas: from its borders with Albania at 5 o’clock in the morning of 28th October, 1940. The state radio

of Athens announced in a laconic way that the Hellenic troops are defending the motherland. The Greek

people, worthy of their glorious ancestors, responded enthusiastically to the mobilization to defend their

country. They went to the front with all possible means. The Greek women, like the ancient Spartans

mothers, were saying good-bye to their beloved husbands, sons and brothers and urging them to return

home victorious.

Italy was militarily superior to Greece. It had a much bigger army, superior air force and advanced

weapons. In contrast, Greece’s main weapon was the decisiveness of its people to die for their freedom

and independence. The prerequisite for winning a war is people not to hesitate to die for their freedom.

The Hellenes, in a few days after the sudden attack, counterattacked successfully. Names of towns like

Sarantaporo, Tepeleni, Argyrokastro and Hagioi Saranta always remind us of the heroism and triumph of

the Hellenes in the Greco-Italian war of 1940. The mountains of Epiros and of Northern Epiros became

the grave for the attacking Italians. Within six months, despite the efforts of the Italians and Mussolini’s

personal efforts, the Hellenes had pushed the Italians well within Albania. They almost threw them in the

Adriatic sea.

The victory of Hellenes was the first victory of the allies of the Second World War. Winston

Churchill, who afterwards was called the Father of The Victory, said in admiring the Hellenes for their

victories, that “from now on we will not say that the Hellenes fight like heroes but the heroes fight

like the Hellenes”.

The contribution of the Greek women in the war was tremendous. They were sending packages with

food and clothes which they had themselves knitted for the fighting soldiers. In addition, the heroic

women of Epiros, worthy descendants of the women of Souli, walking in the mud of the snowed

mountains of Epiros, were carrying ammunition and food for the soldiers on their shoulders.

The victory of the Hellenes against the Italians delayed the Hitler’s attack to Russia for six months. This

delay forced the Germans to fight the Russians during the heavy Russian winter of 1942 with disastrous

for them results. However, the cost of the Greco-Italian war, the German occupation that followed and

the civil war were disproportionally heavy for Greece. From 1940-1950, out of 8 million Greeks there

were one million dead, many wounded handicapped people, a completely destroyed country, and created

seven hundred thousand refuges. The price Hellas paid for its independence was very heavy. Let their

example inspire us to always raise our voice and our sword in defense of liberty and justice. Let the

memory of the fallen brothers of ours stay with us eternally.

Despite all the destruction Greece suffered during the decade 1940-1950, after only 65 years, thanks to

the industriousness of Greek men and Greek women, and the continuous contribution of Diaspora in her

economy, Greece ranks today among the 40 richest countries of the world.

ΡΕΙ»

Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas

“Everything flows; it never remains the same” Philosopher Heraclitus 535-475 B.C

The great philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus believed

in the perpetual change. He said the famous, "Everything

changes and nothing ever stays the same." All beings,

including the humans, change. The change can be realized

only by comparing the new with the old. How many times

have wondered looking ourselves in the mirror “what has

happened to our youth, where did it go?" We understand

change when our children but especially the children of

other people have their own voice, and struggling to find

their way in life, despite our legitimate concern and

sometimes our conviction that after us the world will be

destroyed!

For the "zero generation" immigrants, like me, who

were born in another country there is another change that

we wish never to happen, although we know it will happen.

This change begins to break the principal link that connects

us to the fatherland. This link is our parents.

We are concerned about their health condition

every moment of the day. We are afraid of the moment we

will lose them. We enjoy visiting the old country mainly to

spend a few moments with them. The day we return to our

new home, America, we do not look back because the

moment of separation has always been so difficult, so

painful.

Last summer Ι visited again my fatherland. There

was no one to welcome me in my parents' house. My

parents had departed for the great journey of no return. The

space that once was full of life was empty. There were old

pictures on the walls, clothes, furniture, and all had

something to tell from the past. While I was there, the

house, my home, revived again, but it was no longer the

same. It was strange, but I was missing things that once

used to make me angry. I was even missing my anger

because of my inability to soften the pain of my sick,

elderly parents, However, they lived a full life, they even

visited me in America, and enjoyed their grandchildren.

None can have everything in life, but I believe they

departed this world happy despite their pain.

However, I understood the great change in my life

the day of returning to America. I closed the door, made

sure that my house was locked. This time I did not avoid to

look back, because simply put it my parents were not

standing at the door to say goodbye to me. It was like I was

leaving the place of my childhood, something between my

home and the place I had good time, like a “resort”. The

change of the place had now begun to be formed in my

mind and in my heart. I know I will return again to my

favorite place, but I do not know exactly when. There is no

longer any urgent and imperative need to return. My own

space now started to finalize in my new home.

"EVERYTHING FLOWS".
