Every year, many countries acknowledge the day that cele-brates the independence of Greece.

On the symbolic date of March 25th - in 1821 a series of uprisings culminated into a national rebellion by the Greeks against the Ottoman Empire.

For four hundred years the Greek people had barely existed under the oppressive Ottoman regime, democracy was shackled and freedom was trampled.

As was the practice, and continues to be the practice in many extremist Muslim countries, the Ottomans tolerated the Chris-tians but reduced them to the status of second-class citizens. During 4 hard centuries, the Greeks were subjected to extor-tion, excessive taxation and the occasional mass slaughter.

The highpoint of Ottoman cruelty was the child tax imposed on the Greeks and the other Christians of the Empire. This was a practice wherein the Ottomans recruited, demanded really, the best and brightest children from Christian families and forced them to convert to Islam. These children, mostly males, were then trained in the Sultans civil service or as elite fighters.

The trade in human traffic - as we observe with the exploita-tion of refugees by Ankara - remains a feature of Turkey, the successor of the Ottoman regime.

The litany of cruelties that were inflicted on the Greeks and other Christians, by capricious sultans and Turkish governors,

is long. And as the empire declined, the situation became in-tolerable.

The eventual struggle for independence, which lasted nearly a decade, saw the Greek rebels fight an uneven battle against an empire with large armies and battle fleets. Yet, despite the onslaught of the Ottoman forces and the incredible acts of retri-bution inflicted against the Greek civilians, they survived. And by surviving, they earned the admiration of the civilized world.

In response to Ottoman threats of depopulating southern Greece - the British, French and Russians destroyed the Otto-man fleet Navarino. Remarkably, this was the first attempt of peace-making. And it is a lesson for us that in certain circum-stances it is right to intervene and stop genocide.

The victory of the allies did not end the war, but it gave the Greeks the opportunity to reorganize and eventually triumph, thus preserving the oldest and richest civilization known to man.

The success of the Greek war of independence is a testament to the courage and determination of a people fighting for the right to be free. It remains a powerful example for today and an inspiration for subjugated people to break the chains of slavery and secure their own freedom.

So, on the eve of this celebration of Greek Independence, I would like to take this opportunity to extend the warmest of

wishes to members of the Hellenic community across Canada and around the world.

COLE SOCRATES-DMOSTHNE MAKES HISTORY ON STE-CATHERINE STREETSchool Proudly Participates for the First Time in St-Patricks Parade

(HCGM) In front of close to one million specta-tors, not only did cole Socrates-Dmosthne make history by participating for the first time ever at St-Paddys Parade, the School promoted what the people of Greece and Greeks every-where are most famous for FILOTIMO. The stu-dents of Socrates-Dmosthne of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal proudly repre-sented the humanity, solidarity, empathy and generosity of the Greek people.

Greece has been confronting a daily refu-gee crisis and is doing so by providing shelter, food, medical assistance and warm clothing to all those arriving on their shores despite being struck by their own economic hardships. Our stu-dents on the float were wearing real life jackets worn by surviving refugees which had been sent to us by the Mayor of the Island of Lesbos. Fur-thermore, our School promoted firsthand the nomination of Lesbos for the Nobel Peace Prize, for this massive humanitarian effort.

Battling very cold temperatures, on a spe-cially created float, our students showed all Quebecers what it means to persevere. And in-credible amount of work and effort went into materializing this project, one our Community is very proud of.

FROM A SKETCH ON A SCRAP PAPER TO REALIZATION STE-CATHERINE STREET:

What started as a wild idea, materialized last Sunday at the St-Patricks Parade in front of close to one million spectators. In the end any idea can be achieved as long as there is a plan in place and commitment to the effort. cole Soc-rates-Dmosthnes float, which was unveiled at St-Patricks Parade last Sunday was simply a far-fetched idea that made a lot of sense to us. The difficulty was working out the endless logistics and in coming up with the required funds. One by one, every step led to the next one and slowly our Schools float became a reality.

Once we contacted Guy Pelletier from the float company Au Pays des Geants, with our sketches and ideas, everything started falling in place. Guy Pelletier quickly presented our thoughts and our sketches in an initial design that was only modified slightly right through to the final product. The directors of our campuses,

Katherine Divolis, Chris Filandrianos, Ghislaine Langlois, Steeve Lessard and Georgia Tsakalis, as well as our director general, Chris Adamopoulos, worked with passion to give the project shape and life.

Our humanitarian float, depicting the Greek peoples effort to help the refugees, required something authentic. We contacted the Mayor of Mitilini, in Lesbos, and he shipped us actual life vests used in the rescue efforts. The vests we received where actually still a little wet. Mean-time, soliciting sponsors and donators became a priority in order to cover the expense. Many gracious individuals came forth to help us real-ize our dream. Finally, the entire idea had to be choreographed, to give it life, with our students attending practices with the props, etc.

We would like to take this opportunity to first and foremost congratulate the students that braved the elements and committed to the ef-fort. We want to thank their parents for taking the time to attend the practice sessions and all. We want to thank the educators and administra-tors behind the project including Georgia Tsaka-lis, Eirini Tourkomanolis, Nelli Vlahandreas, Maria Roussis and Chris Adamopoulos. We also want to express our gratitude to the HCGMs Pe-lagia Adamidis and Eleni Sarridou who worked with us to assure the successful outcome.

Finally, cole Socrates Dmosthne wants to thank those that supported the float through sponsorships, donations and in-kind contribu-tions, including: Evan Kioussis CEO Rogers Plan-ete Mobile, Tony Lofredda Quebec Vice-Pres-ident RBC Royal Bank of Canada, Ragal (Tuc Tuc), Minitsos Family G&N Transport, Editions Vaudreuil, K-Litho Design & Printing, Borough of St-Laurent, Borough of Villeray - St-Michel Parc-Extension (Councillor Mary Deros and May-or Anie Samson), Quebec National Assembly: Gerry Sklavounos (dput de Laurier-Dorion); Guy Ouellette (dput de Chomedey); Pierre Arcand (dput de Mont-Royal et ministre de lnergie et des Ressources naturelles); Carlos Leito (dput de Robert-Baldwin et ministre des Finances); Martin Coiteux (dput de Nelli-gan et ministre des Affaires municipales et de lOccupation du territoire).

(HCGM) The Quebec Minister of Finance, Car-los Leito, presented the provinces 2016-17 budget. It was a winning budget for Quebecers with major commitment to Education some-thing long overdue. Following years of cuts to funding, the latest budget should go a long way in helping private education institutions and particularly our School. All this will trans-late to better educational services and the lev-eling off of tuition fee increases, something we are certain all our families will be pleased with.

Along with other officials and dignitaries, the Finance Minister invited cole Socrates-D-mosthnes General Director, Chris Adamopou-los, to be present at the National Assembly for the reading of the budget. This was an honor the General Director could not pass up. Fol-lowing the presentation of the budget, at a

reception in the Red Room, both Carlos Leito and Martin Coiteux, the former Treasury Board President, confirmed to Mr. Adamopoulos that they had made the necessary adjustments to Education funding that we had all lobbied for the last couple of years. This follows one on one meetings with both these government heavy hitters and the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal President, Nicolas Pagonis, and our Schools General Director.

Over the next few weeks we will be informed of all the specific details concerning Education funding and this information will be passed on to all our families. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Laitao for prioritizing education in the budget and also thank Peter Prassas and Nikolitsa Michelakis from Mr. Leitos Office for their great work.
