Commencement is one of our happiest times at AMSI...

HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s words embody theepitome of how happiness leads to good fortune, peace, and prosperi-ty. Inspired by the visionary leaders of this nation, AMSI schools havealways sought to create a community of happy learners who work har-moniously and grow into the fine young individuals we celebrate onthis special day.

Class of 2016, one of our greatest pleasures is seeing the energy and joythat resonate in our hallways, classrooms, and playgrounds. It is in factthis comfort, vitality, and happiness that have made you the creative, witty, and fun individuals that you are today. We are confident that youwill achieve your personal ambitions, but we also know that you havethe potential to change others’ lives just by being yourselves. You over-came all the hurdles and fulfilled all the requirements, no matter howtough they may have seemed at times. You persevered and now it istime to move on.

So many memories were created during your journey; a first performance on Mothers’ Day, a tri-umph during a sports challenge, endless hours cramming for tests, contributions during drama pro-ductions or talent shows, early mornings to walk for a cause, sleepless nights in overnightcamps…Your endless energy and fervour shone in any challenge that came your way, whether big orsmall, academic or fun. You embody the power of happiness, kindness, love and respect in the class-room and outside. We know you will remember all the lessons learned and you will carry them for-ward to the next stage.

A recent study of adult development at Harvard University proved that after examining people for75 years, happiness comes from one thing: good relationships which pave the way for a happy, healthy, and productive life.

So we ask ourselves: Why are we happy? Our core values echo the answer, and our drive to create ahaven for learners to feel safe, happy and respected is our focus…

We are surrounded by thousands of students who inspire us every single day.

We have graduated thousands more who have taken what we have given them and impacted those around them.

We teach. We touch lives. We care.

Commencement is one of our grandest events at AMSI… a time when we celebrate you, our gradu-ates, and a time of absolute happiness. Savor every moment of this special day and then fly out withthe knowledge that you make a difference, and you are the change the world needs.

“We will seek to create a society where our people’s happiness is paramount, by sustaining an environment in which they can truly flourish.”

Another year goes by, and we find ourselves bidding our studentsfarewell as they set forth on another journey of learning and self-discov-ery. With the class of 2016, an elite group of students deserve a specialmention – a group that spent 14 years within their second home, AlMawakeb. We proudly reminisce their first day of school. Their littlehands gripped their parents’ as they opened the doors to the school thatwould later become a second abode. Every year, we saw the once anx-ious and frightened 3-year olds grow and prosper to become hopeful, spirited and curious young learners.

Al Mawakeb School... a special home for 14 years...Take a look at the faces before you. They all tell a story of a 14-year jour-ney, and though it’s the same journey, not one of the stories is the same.

Back in 2002, as your journey began, you all thought about school as aplace that happened to be on the road taking you to your dreams. Butdespite those beliefs, there were moments when you were caught offguard, and in those moments, you made memories. You realized that youhad made friends and connections with teachers and administrators. Youhad shared meaningful conversations and learned insightful lessons insideand outside the classroom. In other words, you had planted your ownroots. Although departing from each other's lives may seem sad at the sur-face, but it's really a celebration of the diversity of your dreams.

So on the eve of your graduation, let us celebrate together because eventhough you are all so different, you have something in common: you expe-rienced life here. Having spent so many years here has helped refine theindividuals you were meant to be. People who loved music and drama hadthe chance to showcase wonderful talents in the Drama Club; those whoenjoyed sports had the opportunity to hone their athletic abilities; thosewho possessed oratory and debate skills savoured the prospect of partici-pating in renowned events like Model UN.

Fourteen years seem to be like a grain of sand compared to the future ahead of you, but what you didwith that little speck of sand was enormous. Some of you have already accomplished a lot. Amongyou, we have witnessed the growth of writers, scientists and engineers, community helpers, athletes, and young politicians. You made it here with your integrity, your skills, and your willpower. You arethe wise, the creative, the brave... You are the future.

so many skilled orators...So many skilled orators gathered to gain the opportunity to speakon behalf of their classmates. This was their chance to express theirfeelings, happiness, gratitude and anxiety about leaving this familiarhome to seek new accomplishments. As usual, the judges had thechallenging task of choosing the best, and the best were many, forall of them spoke words from the heart. So many impressed anddazzled with their sincerity, confidence and maturity. The soreswere close, but finalists were finally selected.

Again, more rigorous auditions, finally, our anxious finalists rushedto hear the results… sounds of murmurs, beating hearts and sighsfilled the room, but only to be later replaced by triumphant andwonderful cries expressing how honoured and fulfilled they felt athaving been chosen.

We are very proud of our finalists, and we hope that their voices willecho in the future and provide inspiration for aspiring AMSI orators.

This year’s graduating class is bursting withambitious, creative and intelligent individuals. The ones who applied for the graduatingspeech, specifically, are the ones who trulyembody achievements and success; therefore, when I was first notified that I had been qual-ified and moved through to the second round, excitement and pride overwhelmed me, and abit of nervousness (if I am being totally hon-est). The thought that my efforts as a studentare being recognized to the extent where I am beingtrusted to represent the school on the biggest event of the academic year is nota task I take for granted and I am truly humbled by this consideration.

so many skilled orators...

According to my prodigious calculation, my chances of qualifying today are amatter of 5-10%. Nevertheless, I’m more than willing to hang on tight to thattiny gleam of hope that, eventually, I will accomplish the dream and become oneof the four or five invincible AMSI graduation speakers. ISAS, a place that hasgiven me so much over the past few years with me providing utterly nothing inreturn makes the equation seem precarious. Having that one chance to speakduring graduation day offers me the perfect opportunity to express my gratitudefor all these sleepless nights at ISAS that have led me to where I am standingnow. Class of 2016 at ISAS is not a mere number or a date; it is a lifetime full oflessons to remember and memories to cherish. I’m more than grateful to havequalified to the second round to compete against rather qualified participants.

Rami Khoury - Gr.12B, International School of Arts & Sciences

Camelia Hamza - Gr.12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud

I believe that everyone deserves a voice and a righteous representation and I amcertain that if I were handed the opportunity to stand on that stage I would makesure to deliver everyone’s voice through mine; therefore when I knew I was qual-ified to the second graduation speech try-outs, I was very happy I was given thechance to take on the role of saying a thousand words through just a picture. When all three classes stand behind me as I utilize my expressive words toembody the voices of our future, I have no doubt in the world that I will impresseveryone and make them proud.

Karen Ftouni - Gr.12B, International School of Arts & Sciences

I am immensely honored and jubilant to havemade it to the second round of the graduationspeeches. This has given me the chance to expressnothing but my appreciation for what I was taughtduring the past 3 years and to celebrate all thememories that are deeply cherished. Moenes Masri - Gr.12B, International School of Arts & Sciences

Moving on to the second round made me onestep closer to doing something I was alwayspassionate about - speaking at my graduationceremony. My goal is not only to remindeveryone to always remember where they comefrom and who they were but to live each daycelebrating who they are. Speaking to my classinspires me to compel them to strive and seekwhat they believe in and to be the change theyknow they can be. I’m forever grateful for thisremarkable opportunity.

Beatrice Touma - Gr.12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud

The moment that I was informed that I had made it to the second round of thegraduation speakers’ auditions, I felt an overwhelming joy. Thoughts of what Iwas going to include in my speech were rushing through my mind. The fact thatI was one of the people that would have the chance to speak in front of hundredsof individuals gave me a sense accomplishment.

Caline Maalouf - Gr.12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha

When I first heard of the auditions, all I could think of was how tight the com-petition was going to be, and all I could picture in my head was a judge sittingthere repeating “Next!” with a tone that reflected nothing but his or her disap-pointment. I was well aware of the talents I was up against, yet I never once hes-itated about giving it a try. After all, I would’ve never known if I could actuallyever make it without trying. I’m not going to lie; after the first round, I left thestage with almost zero belief or confidence that I would ever be called up toread anything ever again; therefore, you can only imagine how I felt about mak-ing it to the second round. The best part of it all was that the news really madethose around me happy for me (more than I was for myself) and that felt reallygreat! Although I didn’t make it to the finals, I was content that I got the chanceto make it somewhere and got the chance to be a part of it all.

Saif Badawi - Gr.12C, International School of Arts & Sciences

Chaimae Jerboui - Gr.12C, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud

Finding out that I had been accepted into the second round of the auditions, I feltas if a weight of great responsibility was placed on my shoulders. For eight years, asI sat in my classrooms, I felt as if my friends and I were all clay pots in the hands ofartists who were working hard to make unique creations. Our teachers are the artistsand because of them, I learnt to handle this responsibility. As Ralph WaldoEmerson says, "Every artist was first an amateur"; hence now, it’s our turn to startsculpting our own destinies.

Niloofar Rezapour - Gr.12F, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha

When I knew that I made it to the second round, bitter-sweet emotions took over.Sweet for knowing I am closer to standing before hundreds of my peers and speakmy mind as clearly and (hopefully) eloquently as I can. Bitter for knowing that Iam closer to leaving this school that has become my second home.

Hassan Mohammad - Gr.12B, International School of Arts & Sciences

Walking to the podium to begin my speech trial, I wiped the sweat off my browwith one of my trembling hands. “I’m supposed to have stage fright,” I whis-pered to myself, but I kept on walking. “I’m not even a good speaker,” I mum-bled again, but I kept on walking. By the time I ran out of all excuses to convincemyself to stop walking, I was already there, ready to speak. Although, my feetwere quivering and I was sweating profusely from body parts that I didn’t evenknow could sweat, I rocked it. It felt amazing knowing that I overcame my fears, but it felt even better knowing that I advanced to the next round. I wish the feel-ings that touched me lasted a life time because for the first time, I was success-ful. I was happy.

Every person has a different purpose and different path. We determine what we makeof ourselves and I believe that our senior year is the time when we can go for it; there-fore when I found out that I was qualified for the second graduation speech auditions,I knew it was my opportunity to show everyone who I am and what I’m capable ofdoing once I set a goal for myself.

Fatma Al Abdouli - Gr.12C, International School of Arts & Sciences

When I heard the announcement, my excitement radiat-ed for this precious second chance. I am thankful to thishonorable committee, but I am also aware of the hugeresponsibility ahead of me. At that moment, all I knewwas to try my best.

Shan Meng - Gr.12F, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha

Making it to the second round was such a great honor.Having the chance to show what I can do to makethings happen taught me to never underestimate myself.I would love to talk on behalf of my classmates and thewhole school. It is the least I can do after all that theschool has given me throughout my childhood.

Habib Al Redha - Gr.12E, Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha

“Great news! You’ve been selected for the secondround of the auditions!” said the head of section. Inever felt more excited hearing this news. Goosebumpsinvaded my arms and thoughts began to cross my mind. Then it struck me. What if I wasn’t chosen or no oneliked my speech? My excitement suddenly turned intoanxiety. I couldn’t even begin to write the speech, noteven a word. Then my parents encouraged me. Theytold me that I won’t succeed if I don’t try. If I tried, Imight make it or not, but if I don’t try, then it’s instantfailure. That’s when I began to write and gave it all I’vegot. It’s been an unforgettable experience.

I felt normal. After all, I didn’t get an acceptance letter from Stanford Universityor win a gold medal at the Olympics; however, normal isn’t neutral. Normal, I daresay, is a positive sensation. It felt “normal” to have enjoyed this tiny breakthroughafter a succession of rather unfortunate events. But this reminded me of black andwhite zebra stripes or, generally, an innate tendency of the universe to reach equi-librium - a phenomenon humanity couldn’t evade either.

Diana Abo Harmouch - Gr.12A, Al Mawakeb School - Al Garhoud

so many skilled orators...

Moving on to the second round made me realize that I have the potential tospeak on behalf of my senior classmates on the special day of graduation. It trulygave me a push to accomplish being the chosen speaker for this wonderfulopportunity. Moreover, this would definitely be a chance for me to express myloyalty, appreciation, and dedication towards AMSI.

Linda Haddad - Gr.12B, International School of Arts & Sciences

To some, competition is a threat that is hard to overcome, but to me it is a chal-lenge worth facing. Knowing that I made it to the second round only drives with-in me an urge to continue up until the very end, for I know that when there’s awill, there’s a way. As sad as it sounds, our high school journey is nearly comingto an end, and for that, I would like to speak on behalf of my classmates to showhow much gratitude and appreciation we all have for getting to spend the majori-ty of our years in a safe, loving, and giving environment. After years of hard work, there’s no better way to end this journey than with a few words that show only aspark of the highlights of our years. Having an opportunity as such is a privilege, and I’d love to be the next person to go on stage and express how wonderful thisschool has been to us ever since the very beginning.

To say that I was shocked when I first heard that I made it to the second roundwould be an understatement. I kept my serious and indifferent facade of course, but in reality I was just ready to run around screaming with joy for having thechance to speak on behalf of Class 2016. Overall, it was a great experience to gothrough.
