    Otherwideandgoldenredlikevineleaves, other thin like a rose leafwith its thousandrocknicks,otherlike two silver croissants that havemettogether.But all of them around the small-estisland,thatonlyanexperiencedswimmercanreachandonlyawiseman can understand and solve itsmystery; a mystery unrevealed atfullmidday thatwashidden in thecenturiesofthedarksky.This is Delos. Islands - Mountaintops-rocks-signs dispersed fromhighabovebyanoldtraveleruponthethicklayerofthesea,justlikehewantedtofindhiswayback.Butheisstilltravelling...Layingonhispapersandcounting...Mantels, circular fences holding intheground,justlikethesilverypeb-bles-sparklingeveninthedarkness-hold in themselves the light ,justlikethehoneynougatonthelemonleavesholdsinitselfthehopeofanendlessloveandthesmallroundedhomesholdinthehug.Theyellowcompetes incolorwiththe moon. The endless obsidiancompetes with the deep darknessof a winter night when he tearsdown the seawaters andemergesthe old shipwrecks of the dreams,blueandgoldenunderthefirstraysofsunshine.Finally, it doesnt matter if youare lost.     The album The bourgeois homes of Andros by Lia Daniolou, (Militos editions) is a deluxe edition, a guide that transfers you to the beauty and magnificence of those interiors. The book al-lows you to enter unrevealed spaces, open doors and visit salons and rooms full of antiq-uities dating back to the 19th century that were brought to Andros by the captains and

    seamen, from Marseilles, Venice, London and Trieste. - Mrs Daniolou you were born in Athens in a family from An-dros but you live most of the time in LondonWhenIfinishedschool,IwenttostudyinLondonwhereIgraduatedfromtheSchoolofFineArts.Imar-riedandhadfamilythere.IdecidedtosharemytimebetweenLondon,Athens and Andros, although, to-

    to issue this high quality album entitled The bourgeois homes of Andros (ilitos editions) featuring photos of Ioanna Nikolareizi and texts of Rania Tzifopoulou-Konstantinidou?The idea had been into my mindfor years.I grew up hearing storiesabout the old times in Andros andthe people that built and inhabitedthose houses, stories from a timewhen Andros was full of life andcommercialactivity,storiesfromthecaptains,themarinesandtheirwivesthatstayedbacktotakecareoftheirfamilywithprudenceandassiduity.IkeepmemoriesofthosehomesthatIusedtovisitduringmyyouthincele-brationsandfamilygatherings.Manyof those homes have remained thesameuntiltoday,justasIrememberthem,withtheirsalonsfullofheavyfurniture,decoratedceilings,thestyleofpaintingsonwalls,theformidablelamps, the grandiose armoires, theporcelainsandcrystals.Allthosearemyreminiscences. Iwishedtowritethem down, to keep them for thefuturegenerations,becausetheyaretheproofofthegloryandprestigeoftheoldCycladesthankstotheship-pinganditspeople.- What impressed you the most about the interior of those houses?Thetechniquesusedforthedecora-tionofthewallsandceilings.Thosemasterpiecesthatmakeyouwonderhowtheycouldhavebeencreatedbyonecraftsmanandhisassistant.- Lamps, paintings, etageres, photographs, carpets, porce-lains, crystals, wooden stairs

    and decorated ceilings. Were you a bit jealous of all that?All thosedecorations andobjects ofart can only inspire admiration andmaybeamixedfeelingofnostalgiaanddisappointment because nowadayscraftsmenarenotsoperfectionists.- Thus, could this edition be defined as an exceptional collec-tion of pictures and testimonies depicting the mentality of the captain and his wife of that time?Well, thatswhatwetriedtodo.Thecombinationofphotosandre-cites canmentally transfer you totheatmosphereofthosehouses.- So it has a double purpose; to present not only those architec-tural jewels but also the spirit and allure residing within themWellthatwasouraimandweputalloureffortsinit.Thereadershalljudgeifwereallymadeit.- Andros used to be the capital of shipping, intellectuality and bourgeois noblesse. Today, are there any traces of the old glory?First of all, those houses still exist,you can admire the pediments, thefiligreerailings,themulticoloredtiles,theornate facadesandthemajesticinteriors witnessing a time of hardwork and economic development.Moreover,many of the people thatwitnessed those times of glory arestill alive.     Andros,oneofthelargestandmostbountiful Cycladic islands, has alongstanding tradition in fruit pre-serves,thefinestofwhicharesweetwalnutandlemonpreserves(madefrom lemon blossoms), whilst itis also known for its kaltsounia,amygdalota and its pastitsakiathat can be found at many of theislandsconfectioneries.Alsonoteworthyisthesoumada,a distinctive refreshment made ofbitter almonds and traditionallyservedatweddingsdilutedwithwa-ter.PerhapsthemostcharacteristicdishofAndriancuisineisthefillingfroutalia;beyondeggs,thistradi-tionalomeletteincludesdifferentel-ementsrangingfrommorecommon(suchassausages)tomoreunusualingredients(suchasbroadbeans,tomakethekoukofroutalia).This is an eclectic delicacy, as it ismade of sundried or smoked ani-mal loins, and there are variationsin its preparation between islands.In Andros it is called vasilikia,because it ismadefromsteak.An-driansausagesaremadeofpiecesofporkthataremixedwithlocalwine,orangezestandaniseed.Theyalsomakepaspala(lard).In the evening, everyone that hascontributed to the chirosfagia

    takesaseattosharearichmeal,andthisusuallyresultsinanightofhighjinks.Thefoodisofcoursederivedfromthepig,fromhotsisyra,liverwith lemon and perhaps oregano,vermicelli(oncehandmade)orricecooked in pork broth, to boiledmeat on the bone, dolmades andmore.Inmanyislands,thechiros-fagiatakeplaceonChristmasEve.If you findyourself inAndrosoverEaster,youabsolutelymusttrythelambriate, or stuffed goat. Anabundanceofeggs,variouscheeses,liver,friedbreadandanassortmentof spices are mixed together in alarge casserole until they begin tocurdle. The goat is stuffed, sewedshutandbakedintheoven. Inad-dition to all of the above, makesure to seek out the tasty cheesevarieties of Andros: the petrotemade of goat or cow milk; themalahtowhosenamemeansthatithasbeenkneaded;thevolakia,acreamytablecheese,andfinallythearmexia,acheesemadeofamix-tureofcowandgoatmilkandthemanouso, a soft savoury cheese.Finally,seekoutthepontziintheGavriohoria,theAndrianrakomelo,madeoflekatisiorakiandhoney(Ericahoney).

    It is perhaps a little-known fact thattheGreek languageused tobe spo-kenwithanorthernpronunciationintheAndriantownofKorthi,meaningthatcertainvowelswerenotenunci-ated.Anevengreateridiosyncrasyofthisbeautiful islandwastheemploy-mentoftheArvanitikadialectbytheresidentsoflittlevillagesinthenorth-western precinct, which accordinglybecameknownasArvanitia.Thetwoprincipal Arvanitika-speaking villageswereAmolohosandArne; thesearebothbelieved tohavebeen foundedunderPetroZenos(1384-1427)rule,themostastuteandproactiveofallofthe Frankish leaders ofAndros,whohadbeenrepeatedlyusedinthediplo-maticmissionsfromVenice.The secluded community of theArvanitiavillagesalsoimposedacer-tain relationship of endogamy uponthese.Theirmovetotheislandcapitalor toKorthimusthave initiallybeendifficultandsporadic.Yetthisstrictin-

    troversiongenerallydeprivedtheresi-dentsofthedevelopmentofaclosersocialconnectionandcommunicationwithoutsiders.Wehavealreadynot-edthatthetownsquareisnotonlyafeatureabsentfromallArvanitikavil-lages,butthatitisalsononexistentasaterm(andthereforeasaconcept)intheislandsArvanitikadialect.Their livesmust have been arduous,thepeoplefrugal,andtheymusthavemaintainedadistanceevenwhenin-teracting amongst themselves. Themen had to focus on sustaining thesoilinthefield,toploughandsowitandtoprovidebothgrainandstraw.Awomans responsibilities were nu-merous and laborious; she had tocook,tolugwaterfromthecommunaltap(whichwasnotalwaysnearby)inapitcherandtochopwoodtocarrybacktothehouse forthestove;shehadtokneaddough,towashclothesintheriver,toweaveusingaloom,tosortmeslinandtogo(usuallyalone)to the mill to grind the grains. Abirth, abaptism,or aweddingwerenoteventsaccompaniedbylivelycer-emonies,dancesandextravaganzas.Itis no coincidence that relatively fewsongs have survived. The weddingceremony usually took place in thebrideshome.Rakiandkourambiedeswereoffered;theyatesardines,pasta,froutaliaomelet,riceandgrilledmeat.During more recent times, a dancewasorganizedinoneortwoofthevil-lagehousestocelebrateanoccasioninhonourofapatronofthearea.Itwastheonlyopportunityfortheyouthofneighbouringvillagestointeract.They

    rarelysangsongsandthese(at leastin more recent years) were only inGreek. They danced only the SyrtosandtheislandBallos,alikeinallofthevillages.Musiciansusuallycame fromtheislandcapital.Themusicaltroupe,thezygiaastheywerecalled,con-sistedofaviolin,atubaortabordrum,ofadulcimerandalute;thebagpipeswere also played on rare occasions,usually tosingChristmascarols.Mu-sicandartingeneraldidnotresonatewiththesehardandreclusivepeople.ItisnocoincidencethatasinglemillerfromAmolohos,Nik.Helmes,sethismindtochiselthehardlocalstoneinVaridiwherehelived,makingimprintsof strange figures that he wantedplacedathisgrave.TheuniqueartistPericlesDemetriouTzineHelmes(fi-nalthirdofthe19thcentury),whoseartworkscannowbefoundintheNa-tionalGallery,BenakiMuseumandtheHistorical and Ethnological Museum,wasalsofromAmolohos.The religious life of Arvanitia ispalpable but not especially pro-nounced, bearing in mind thenumberofchurchesandthequalityoftheiredificeinthevillagesoftheregion.Yet,fromtheirnamesithasbeenderivedthatclericswereusu-allylocals.Itwastheirhermiticlivesthat attracted theArvanites; in themonasteries of their vicinity theirinteraction with literate monks isattested, suchas in thecaseof themonasteryoftheSaint,forexample,towardswhich important contribu-tionsintheformofestates,livestockandproducehaveoftenbeenmade.

    George Speis: Howaninsignificantislandofshepherdsbecameaglobalnavalpower

    There is an important landmark/revolution, whose cause is unknown to us, in the Aegean after 1840. This occurs in Sifnos, where the forging of resilient crockery is perfected. Over the next 30-50 years, this prompts both Sifnian crockery merchants and craftsmen to spread everywhere and to set up locally. This will have a great impact on lo-cal pottery. The degree to which this is affected beyond crockery manufacturing still remains unknown, as does the process of what exactly happened in these different places earlier on. The magnitude of this impact, however, was such that in many places, potters remained known as sifnians, even if they were not of Sifnian descent. Additionally, we know that local names, as well as various types of earthenware, must have still been preserved despite this effect. There is certainly a need for much more research on the issue to draw appropriate conclusions.ThesearethewordsoftheOinoussianwriter,researcherandethnographerGeorgeSpeistakenfromthisyearsAssociationoftheFriendsofKeacalendarthatisdedicatedtopottery.FollowinghisbooksentitledThourideskaiMelissokepiatesAndrou,TaliotriviakaiieliastinAndro(TheOilPressesandtheOliveinAndros),OiSifnioitisAndrou(TheSifniansofAndros),thisyearthediversewriterresearches,studiesandwritesaboutanotheraspectofAndrianfolkculture,thewindmills,andparticularlyaboutthetavlomylos,atypeofwindmillfoundexclusivelyinAndros.Abouthisnewbook,hewrites: The tavlomylos of Andros is (Giannis Chrysostrates at the mill of Foleros in Korthi reminisces ) a unique piece of traditional equipment that must be acknowledged and salvaged. Above all, it is an important folk invention and through this publication I try to explain and to showcase it. The man that has provided me with the knowledge and who is always willing to explain and to contribute any information about Andros when I have required it, is the grandson of the man who built the mill, Giannis Chrysostrates.

    - Mr Speis, how is it that you, an Athenian electrical engineer with a long incumbency and career in the united States, became pre-occupied with folk culture and that of Andros in particular?IstudiedintheUnitedStates.IhaveworkedinGreeceandRomania.In any case, it is only once you aregoneandhavelivedawayfromyourhomelandthatyoucanconceptualizewhatismeantbylonging.Itisthisthatpromptedme to inquire intomyselfandmy roots.Weembody folk cul-

    the invention of a common arti-san. Through the research that Ihave conducted, I have discoveredhow thisman came to design thismachine. It is, in fact, very impor-tantbecause it isoneofmanyfolkdevices that were designed duringthe 20th century and that wereabandoned without being studied.I believe that there needs to beresearch on traditional technologythatprovidedsolutions throughoutmillenniaof experience so thatwemayadjustimportedtechnologyto

    ourownenvironment.Iwillrefertoother similar folk devices, such aswindmillsinKea,Serifos,MelosandKarpathos. Which are these books and what is their content?IhavenotdealtwithAegina.TheOinousses, or better Egnoussa, aswe natives call it, constitute thefatherland. Following four years ofresearchonfolkcultureIthusalso

    studied the families of the island.It is thus that a four-volumebookconsisting of this original researchwaspublished. I think that itmustbe the only place in Greece forwhich information has been gath-ered from all social castes, withinterviewsfromapproximately250people from Greece, the UnitedStatesandGreatBritainwhowereallofthisorigin.- You actively participate in the Association of Ethnographic Studies in the creation of a col-lection with objects of material with the intention to create a Museum of Folk Crafts and Vo-cations. Tell us about this.The association no longer exists.It ceased operating twenty yearsago. I participated in the collectionof objects and information from allover Greece. I was therefore for-tunate enough to have met manypeoplerangingfromThracetoManiand the islandswhilstonmyquest.It was a formative experience. I alwayswantedtounderstandhowasmall,insignificant islandmanaged tobe-come the place with the highestincome per capita in Greece, andnotonly.Ithereforehadtoexploreand understand. As it is a part ofwho Iam, itwasnecessary formetoexploreEgnoussa.Althoughitisaveryisolatedplace,mybelongingthereallowedmetoaccessandtobe provided with a great deal ofinformation. I realized that manyimportant cultural features thatstretchbeyondthislittleislandandthatexplainpartsofmodernGreekculturewerebeingsalvaged.Never-theless,Ionlypresentedthedatainthe book, and I did notmake anycommentary. I havent done this

What do you recall from your childhood there?Iwas born in Stenies of Androsin 1959 and stayed on the islanduntil1976whenIgraduatedfromthe Nautical College of Androswith the aspiration to become acaptain.Ikeepthebestmemoriesfrom my childhood-as all peopleraised in theprovince-but I espe-ciallyrememberthestoriestoldbymy parents and the captains thathad returned on the island andpassed their time narrating theiron board experiences.     renovation works were completedin 2001. The Foundation providesmodernexhibitionhalls,conferenceand multi-purpose rooms of a ca-pacityof380participants,a library,conferencesupportrooms,aninter-netroom,acafandaterrace.Itisa benchmark of cultural activity as

Honeycul-ture is very widespread due tothe specific fauna, especially rich

    in xerothermic apiarian plantssuch as thyme, satureia thrumba,sageetc.TheMagiatikoofKeaandMylos,the lefkatisioofAndrosarebeeproductsproducedbytherichagrestal faunaoftheCycladesandarepartofthehistoryandmythol-ogy of the region. The apiculture,an art exercised for thousands ofyearson the islandofCyclades, isnowadaysoneofthemostdynamicofbranchesofprimaryproductionwhichisunfortunatelyindeepfall.Lately, the number of beekeepershas been rising while more and

    moreproducersareparticipatinginNational and European apicultureprogramsandactions.According to the Department ofAgricultural Economy and Veteri-naryMedicineoftheRegionoftheSouth Aegean, the Cyclades com-plex produces 450 tons of honeyper year. Particularly, our regionhas 1229 registered apiculturersand54.060beehives.Thegreatestpart of the apiculturers is locatedin Andros and Naxos. The aboveinformationshowthatapicultureisaverydynamicmarketintheCyc-lades region, it is exercised eitherasamainoccupationorasaparttime activity and hasmany bene-fits,suchastheeconomicboostofthefamilycompanies,thedwellingofvillagersintheless-favouredandmountainousareasoftheCycladesregion and the protection of theecologicalbalance.AccordingtoVaggelisPapas,agron-omistM.Sc.,90%oftheexploita-tions filed in the Apicultural Ex-ploitation Register of the CycladesRegion are amateur which meansthattheyareunitsoflessthan150hives. The apiculturers ofCycladesjoincooperativesinordertobenefitfromtheEURegulationswhiletheyusually commercialize their prod-ucts without agents in a relativelyhigh price. The primary and mostpopular product of Cycladic api-culture is the thyme honey whichfinancially remains very efficientforthefamilycompanieswhentheclimatic conditions and the apicul-

    turalpracticesareideal.Apiculture,when practiced either as a mainoccupationorasasecondaryactiv-ity can raise the family income ofthe islanders. According to severalstudies, the income of the apicul-turers with over 150 hives raisessignificantlyduetothehighproduc-tion of honey sold at a high priceaswellasthecommercializationofotherrelatedproducts(suchasthecombs of Kythnos and dipleria).Those apiculturers are consideredprivileged compared to the otherfarmers.Specifically, the majority (46%) ofthe families engaged in agriculturehasahighincomewhile43%hasamedium incomeandonly 11%ap-pearstohavealowincome. According to Andreas Thrasyvou-lou, professor of the Apicultureand Sericulture department of theAristotle University of Thessalo-niki, honeymighthave anordinarysweetening taste but it is ratherdifferent than all other sweeteners.According to various studies, theconsumptionofsugarcanbedetri-mental for our health because it ischemicallyprocessedwhilethepro-longedboilingofsugarjuicekillsallnutritional facts.However,honey isabiologicalproductcontainingover180nutritionalfacts.Thehoneyhasuniquenutritionalbenefitsduetoitssimple and complex sugars,miner-als, aminoacids, flavourings, antibi-otic ingredients, bitamins, enzymesandotherfactsaswellasitsorganiccompounds.

    Naxos, the island of Zeus and Di-onysus, is a combined relief ofmountains and hilly-plains thatproducesallgoodsof theworld.Its local meats and dairy productsare famous around the globe. Thegraviera cheese of Naxos has aprotecteddesignationoforiginsince1996.Itisproducedin10kilopiecesand has an intense fruity and but-tery taste. The arseniko cheese(meaning male or masculineingreek)isayellowcheeseofhardconsistency made of fresh sheepand goatmilk. The XinomizithraofNaxosismadeoflocalcowmilkand it is an exquisite, rich, creamycheesewith a sour taste of yogurtwhilexinotiro is actuallydrainedxinomizithra. In Naxos, you canalso find the local anthotiro andmizithra. The local vegan produce is ofunique quality while the most re-nowned vegetable is the Naxospotato. It is a tasteful, specificmi-crocarpusvarietyofpotatoofhardconsistency considered one of thetrademarksofthelandofCyclades.Today, it is unfortunately foundin reduced quantities. Naxos alsoproducesolives,oliveoilaswellaslocalsweetwine.ThemostfamousspecialtyofNaxosistheKitroliq-uor.Ithasaverypungenttasteandis exclusively produced by distilla-tionofcitrusleaves.Takewithyou

    abottleoforiginalKitroliquorasasouvenir.During the Easter period, youcan taste the labriano specialty(stuffed lamb or young goat). Thestuffing(calledbatoudoinNaxos)ismadewithriceandchoppedveg-etables(suchasswisschard,dillandfennel). Finally, you can taste theavgokouloures and bathraka-kia, 8-shaped cookies decoratedwithwhiteandred-dyedeggs.The sefouklotes are small orlarge herb pies made with se-fouklaherb, fennel,parsley,pop-pies, Mediterranean hartwortsandother forbswhile sometimesrice and raisins are added. Theyare traditionally prepared duringthe first week of the Great fastperiod.Theprovatsesdelightisherbscookedwithonionsanddill,haddock or pork fricassee. TheGiachnada dish is a traditionalsummer delight prepared withonion, garlic, parsley, eggplants,potatoes, squash and mashedpotatoes sauce.Amathies is thetraditionalChristmasdishofNax-os. It is preparedwith pork gutsand belly stuffed with the finelychopped parsley, dill, sefouklaherbs, fennel and rice. Naxospromises a wealth of meat, fishandsea fooddishesthatwillsat-isfyyourculinarydesires.

    -Mr Vazaios, a feverous event takes place on the 12th km of the central road connecting the Chora of Naxos with its inland, where the Bazeos Tower stands

    in the valley of Agiassos. How did it all start? Our ideaemergedby thewishoftheownerof theBazeosTower toseenotonlyhisbeautifulhistorical

    buildingbutallgreatsitesofNaxosreviveandbeapartofthemoderncultural identityofNaxos. In2001,when the festival started in a par-tially reconstructed, at that time,

    monument, the abandon and dis-regardof the culturalheritagewasdisappointing.- What were your aims back then?Of course, we wanted this pre-served monument dating back tothe17thcenturytobecomealand-markof themoderntimeswithoutoffending its history and architec-turalallurewhileaimingattherightpromotionandmanagementoftheculturalwealthofNaxos.During the late 90s, the politicalworld kept repeating words andideas about cultural revival butwithoutproceedingintoactions.The Festival of Naxos started in2001 seeking not only to revivethe cultural life ofNaxos and turnNaxosintoafocalpointofthemod-ernculturalmap,butalsotoprovethat inordertostartan institutionthere is noneedofbigwords andpromisesthereisonlyneedofavi-sionandhardwork.- Which are the axes of your cultural philosophy?Ourphilosophy isbasedonthesethreebeliefs:Cultureneedsfreedomofexpres-sion,time,educationandmethod.

    Culture is a source and at thesametimeapartoftradition,butitalsoneedstoprogressandex-pressmodernandforwardviews.

    Culture can express facets ofmoderneverydaylifeandstillbeaHighArt, it can includemeta-phor and aim at the conversionand transformation of the badsidesoflife.

    Our motto: Modern, original, em-blematiccreation formodern,pre-occupiedandactivecitizens.- The establishing of the festival has created a permanent high

    quality audience and has boost-ed cultural tourism in the island bringing positive results to the local economy. What are your next aims?Thespreadingoftheeventstootherbuilding and sites of the island, theprogressionof the cooperationwithlocalcarriers,theconnectionandmu-tualsupportofsimilarGreekfestivalsaswellasforeignculturalevents.- Last year, the Festival of Naxos celebrated its 10 years, would you like to make a short review as regards this last decade?Wearehappyaboutthelongevityandprogressofthisinstitution.Thepreference expressed by the fansof the festival is thegreatestproofofitsimportance.Weareproudoftheeventsandtheartandtheatricalproductions organized during thefestival.Werespectandappreciatethe friends, supporters and spon-sors that have largely contributedto thedevelopmentof thepresentfestival.- What are the plans for this year?2012shallbeacriticalyearasre-gardstheeconomicrecoveryofthecountry, the people of the festivalofNaxosshallputall theirenergy,know-how and support to the or-ganizationofselectiveeventscover-ingallformsofartsuchasliterature,theatre,musicanddancethatshalltakeplace in thecharacteristichis-toricalvenuesofNaxos.SpecificallythefestivitiesshallincludeaconcertofsecularmusicoftheMiddleAgesintheKastroofthetownofNaxos,amoderndanceshowbytheteamSinequanon inthearchaeologicalsite of Iria, theatrical plays in theBazeos Tower and concerts of

    MarkusStockhausen,RossDalyandElliPaspala.Afocalpointofthisyearsfestivalisthe art exhibition organized in theinterior of the Bazeos Tower. Theplastic arts exhibition entitled Di-mitir-gi (Demeter mother earth)is a multidimensional artistic recur-rence of archetypal images of theancient Goddess Demeter, inspiredspecificallyfortheTowerbytheart-istsMiltosPanteliasandIriniGonou.Theexhibitionisnarrativelydeploredthrough an open dialogue with thenatural site of the sanctuary of theGoddess-oneofthemostimportantarchaeological sitesof the island lo-cated near the Bazeos Towerandit is musically accompanied by thecompositionsofIliasPantelias.(Du-ration: 21st July to 2nd September2012/Openinghours:everydayfrom10:00to17:00)- Finally, could you tell us a few words about the history of the Bazeos Tower?The tower was built at intervalsfrom1600andon, itoperatedasamonastery of theHolyCross up tothe early 19th centurywhen itwasabandoned by the last pilgrims andcame under the property of theNewlyEstablishedGreekState.Inthelate19thcentury,itwaspurchasedinaderelictconditionbytheBaseggiofamily and isunder thepropertyofits inheritorsuntil today.Foroveracentury, the family realizing the im-portanceandhistorical valueof thebuildinghasmanagedtomaintainitinapracticallyandaestheticallygoodcondition. Since2001, after the lastrenovation works made exclusivelywith private funding, the BazeosTower has been the benchmark oftheFestivalofNaxos.
