When our Lord reached thirty years from His physical birth, He began His teaching and salvific work. He Himself signified this “beginning of the beginning” by His Baptism in the Jordan River. St Cyril of Jerusalem says: “The beginning of the world is water; the beginning of the Gospel is the Jordan.” At the time of the Baptism of the Lord in water, the mystery was declared to the world — the mystery that was prophesied in the Old Testa-ment; the mystery that was known only in fables in ancient Egypt and India — the mystery of the Divine Holy Trinity. The Father was revealed to the sense of hearing, the Spirit was revealed to the sense of sight, and the Son was revealed to the sense of touch. The Father uttered His witness about the Son, the Son was baptized in the water, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovered above the water. When John the Baptist bore wit-

ness to Christ, saying: Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29), and when John immersed and baptized the Lord in the Jordan, the mission of Christ in the world and the path of our salvation were shown. That is to say, the Lord took upon Himself the sins of mankind and died under them (immersion) and rose again (the coming out of the water); and we must die to the old sinful man and rise again as cleansed, renewed and regenerated. This is the Savior and this is the path to salvation. The Feast of the Theophany is also called the Feast of Illumination. The event in the Jordan River illuminates us by manifesting God to us as Trinity, consubstantial and undivided. That is one way that we are illumined. And the second way is that every one of us through baptism in water is illumined, in that we become adopted by the Father of Lights through the merits of the Son and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Apolytikion Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

    St. Paul's Letter to Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7

    Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Psalm 117.26,1

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Verse: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His mercy endures forever.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7

TITUS, my son, the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to re-nounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appear-ing of the glory of the great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to re-deem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not be-cause of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

    Gospel Ευαγγέλιο

The Theophany of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ The Gospel According to Matthew 3:13-17 At that time, Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have pre-vented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus an-swered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

THEOPHANY - JANUARY 6 About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John the Forerunner, who was some six months older than our Savior according to the flesh, and had lived in the wil-derness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the bap-tism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Savior also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvelous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Havens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called “Theophany,” that is, the divine manifestation, God’s appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens. The Baptism of our Lord, also called Epiphany, is celebrated on January 6. This Great Feastday of our Lord is also referred to as “The Feast of Illumining” because through baptism we are illuminated. God has a plan for mankind. His plan is for us to grow in knowledge and in wisdom, according to how we could bear it, in purity, with-out any knowledge of evil at all. But man didn't choose that plan. So God, in His wisdom knowing this, sent His Only-begotten Son. We can only understand God when He chooses to reveal Himself to us. So, that is why our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came incarnate of a Virgin, into the midst of us - to invigorate us and make us able to live. His ministry was two-fold: Being God, He taught us all the things that were necessary for our salvation, by His example, by how He lived, by how He spoke, by His demeanor; and He transmitted this faithfully and carefully to His disciples. This is only to be found - this mind of Christ is only to be found - in our precious Christian Ortho-dox Faith, and it has been transmitted carefully and perfect-ly, throughout the ages, by the Church. He showed us no only by His teaching, but also by how He lived; He was a man, as well as being God, so He was subject to the things we are subject to, even unto death. His words certainly have weight, so since He subjected Himself to baptism, He set the example for us to be bap-tized. He was not the kind of leader, or the kind of king, who would tell his subjects to do something that He was not willing to do. He will do more for us than He requires of us and expect more of Himself. That is the principle of leadership. A leader, whether he be a father, a mother,

or a priest, or an employer, or someone who teaches chil-dren, such as many of the stewards in this parish, must lead by example. He taught us how to do it, and gave us the blueprint of how to do it. The feast of the Theophany is an amazing thing. He who created the waters submits to being baptized in them; He who created the heavens and the earth and saw that it was good and without evil, submits to cleansing in waters. He who regenerates our flesh, Who is the Regener-ator, He descends in the flesh into regenerating waters; and He does this to show us how necessary it is for baptism. Baptism is an image; it is an image of death and of life. The Church says it over and over and over again. When we descend into the waters, we die. Our old man, with its deceitful desires, dies in the waters. When we as-cend out of the waters, we are reborn a new creature. This is a hard thing to understand. We cannot fathom it. We do not know how a man is reborn of water and the Spirit, we just know how we are told to begin the Christian life. Bap-tism is the first Sacrament that we experience. Without it, we are not able to progress in the knowledge of God. The knowledge of God IS salvation! How can anyone stand against this truth when our Lord endorses it so emphatically? Our Lord does not tell us to do anything we are not capable of doing. He promises us that we will rise from the dead. Well, he did it to Himself, so we are capable. He commands us to be baptized; He did it Himself. He turned the other cheek when He was slapped by the arrogant Pharisees and by their henchman, the Ro-man soldiers. And He commands us to turn our cheek when we are slapped. He commands us to forgive, and He for-gave. There is nothing, there is no commandment that the Lord gave that He did not fulfill Himself. He even told us to be perfect, and He was perfect - in the flesh and as God. So all those things we are capable of doing because He did them for us and made us able to. He led by example, and He led by power and grace and mercy. There is responsibility placed upon each of us be-cause of the grace we have been given - because of our baptism. In addition, because of our participation in the Sacramental life of the Church, everything we do is sacred, and it makes us responsible, for living according to how we have promised to live. The good news is that we are ABLE to do it, because the God-man made us able to do it! God revealed Himself, and continues to reveal Himself to us, as we are able to understand Him. That is the meaning of Theophany. That is the meaning of the illu-mining. May it be that all of us are illumined and follow Him throughout the days of our life. Amen.

    BLESSING OF HOMES

In memory of Christ’s Baptism on the Feast of

Epiphany, when Jesus sanctified all the waters

of the world, the Orthodox Church follows an

ancient tradition of holding the Service of the

Blessing of the Waters on January 6. The

Church asks God’s blessing to come upon the

water, which we then share with all believers.

Through this water the grace of God comes upon

us! Following the service, the priest blesses all

the believers in the Church with the holy water

and offers them a bottle to take home and drink

each day, or whenever they feel a special need

for God’s grace. The Church also has the beau-

tiful tradition of the pries taking the holy water

into the homes of all believers and blesses their

home. Through this ritual we ask for God’s

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we

not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but

provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child pro-

tecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous

member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ.

Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we acci-

dentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our rec-

ords. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating January Namedays and beseech our heavenly Father to grant

    them many years. Χρόνια Πολλά!

Dear Friends of the Community, In an effort to defray the cost of publishing our Weekly Bulletin, & Vision, the Parish Council would like to invite anyone who wishes to support the Community to offer a small donation of $250.00 for a “business card” sized ad which will be placed on the back inside pages of each publication for the calendar year, 2018. We generally publish a Weekly Bulletin as well as a Quarterly Newsletter, and with this program, hope to cut our publication cost in half by gathering 36 ads which will take up the last four pages of the Vision & Bulletin. If you are interested in this program, please send a business card that we will reproduce. Please also en-close a check made out to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for $250.00.
