FRIDAY 5/7/2013Friday 5/7/2013- Screening Α- Unit 1 A Dream Within a DreamDuration: 87 min Curated by FILMHOUSE

The New Film Club of Kalamata FILMHOUSE (which started about a year ago a dynamic weeklyscreening program in Kalamata) curated especially for Festival Miden a selection of acclaimed short films,in an attempt to connect contemporary video-art with older or representative examples of artisticapproaches of narration by significant creators of the 7th Art.

Personal visions, fever dreams and strange stories which meet up for the first time, unreel the inspirationand the means used by the art of cinematography, from it's birth till now. In their narrative, realityintersects in a phenomenal way with fantasy, forcing the viewer to see his everyday life from a differentpoint of view. There are times that reality is so distorted, that only though a distorting mirror you canrecover its form and face a clear image.

1. Georges Melies, Le Voyage Dans Le Lune (1902) ,13 minThe film is considered to be the first fiction film ever. It is undouptly the progenitor of sience fictionfilmography and, above all, a dreamy pioneering achievement.

2. Luis Bunuel, Un ChienAndalou (1929), 16 minWhen Salvador Dali's visual allegories meet the anarchic deconstruction of Louis Bunuel, the result isan avant-garde surealistic manifesto.

Page 8: Festival Miden 2013 Program_eng

3. Dominique Monféry / Walt Disney / Salvador Dali, Destino (1945 -2003), 7 minHidden metaphors and allegories in a fantastic animation world created by Walt Disney and SalvadorDali, which was completed by Dominique Monfery, 58 years after.

4. Chris Marker, La Jetee (1962), 28 minA masterful combination of static images and a narrative voice-over, which create a dystopianaudiovisual poem. A monumental study on montage and memory, which is considered one of the bestmovies of all times.

5. Juan Diego Solanas, L' Homme Sans Tete (2003),18 minWith a Cannes Festival Jury Prize Award as a trophy, the story of "The Man Without a Head" may beplaced in a future society, but its central message remains timeless and incurably optimistic.

6. Josh Mahan / Joey Ingram, Awaken (2005), 5 minEven if the means have developed, everyday life is still today an endless compact between good andbad.

Friday 5/7/2013 Personal Cinema: Banopticon, the gameInteractive installation - videogame www.personalcinema.org

Videogames can be either media or games. But sometimes they can be both. As media, they may carry anidea from one place to another. As games, they establish a set of conditions within which humans play.Any meaning or message that comes out of the game is generated by the players, and was not necessarilyenclosed in the game's design.

The videogame Banopticon has been under development since January 2010, and will be completed byMarch 2013, into the context of a MIG@NET, a E.U's research project (mignetproject.eu). The project, iscoordinated by Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (UPSPS), Centre for Gender Studiesand includes partners from seven European countries as: University of Bologna, Department of Politics,Institutions and History // Symfiliosi (SYM), Cyprus // Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme(FMSH), Paris // University of Hamburg, Institute for Sociology (UHH) // Utrecht University, Departmentof Media and Culture Studies-Graduate Gender Programme (UU) // The Peace Institute, Institute forContemporary Social and Political Studies (PI), Ljubljana // University of Hull, Department of Humanities,UK.

The aim of the videogame Banopticon is to collect data from the research fields, organize them as gameelements, create different game spaces and finally disseminate them to the public. The game is designed -- for now -- as an online single-user 3D videogame and will include video, soundrecordings, web pages, photography and texts, in a playful form.

The material and the results of the research, are embedded into environments that correspond to theresearch fields, to the contemporary situations that refer to migration, to the physical or electronic forms ofcontrol of it and consequently to the definition of the geographical and digital borders. They refer as well tothe forms of production and labor and to the acts of exclusion, violence or in the contrary to the forms ofcoexistence with the – so-called legal -- inhabitants of Europe.

The working team of Banopticon is the Personal Cinema collective (personalcinema.org ) that includes:Yannis Skoulidas (artist-programmer), Ilias Marmaras (media artist), Xenia Koliofoti ( script co-writer andeditor) Daphne Dragona (New Media curator) and the collaborators, Dimitris Fotiou (sculptor-3D designer)and Alex Salapatas (programmer).
