from the Greek εὐθανασία meaning "good death": εὖ, eu (well or good) + θάνατος, thanatos(death)
• Voluntary euthanasia- at request of the patient
• Non-voluntary euthanasia- patient not competent
• Involuntary euthanasia- murder
• Active Euthanasia-giving something that directly and intentionally results in death
• Passive Euthanasia-withholding treatment knowing it will result in premature death
• Physician Assisted suicide- physician provided mean or information about suicide
Double Effect
• The action must be good in itself• The agent must intend only the good
effect and not the evil effect• The good effect must not be achieved
through the evil effect• There is sufficient reason to permit the
evil effect
