Analysis of econome trends in the second quarter of 1986

Volume trends : Community GDP up 5.9 X.

The seasonally adjusted increase in the Community's GDP for the second quarter of 1986 remained in line with the annual rate at 5.9 X. In the fourth quarter of 1985 and the first quarter of 1986 growth rates of 0,5 X and 1,3 X respectively were recorded.

In the United States, the growth rate fell to 0.6 X in the second quarter (as against 3.7 X in the first quarter), apparently as a result of a downturn in exports.

Japan, on the other hand, reversed its drop of - 3.1 X for the first quarter, recording a rise of 3.6 X.

The situation in the main Community countries for the second quarter of 1986 is as follows :

Federal Republic of Germany : growth of 13.6 X, positive trends for all the aggregates, sharp upturn in investment

France : increase of 4 X, domestic demand steady

Italy : growth of 3.8 X, downturn in imports

United Kingdom : growth of - 0.1 X, fall in investment.

Price trends : + 5.7 % over the year in the Community.

The annual average inflation rate between the second quarter of 1985 and the second quarter of 1986 remained higher in Europe (estimated at 5.7 X) than in the United States (+ 2.7 X) and Japan (+ 2.6 X).

Within the Community, GDP prices rose slightly in the Federal Republic of Germany (+ 3.8 7. compared with 3.0 X in the first quarter of 1986) and Italy (+ 10.2 7. compared with 9.5 X) while in Prence they were thought to have remained constant (estimated at 6.0 7.). The United Kingdom, on the other hand, registered a slow-down in the rate of increase (3.7 % compared with 5.6 X).

Analyse de L'évolution économique du deuxième trimestre 1986

Evolution en volume : + 5.9 X pour le PIB de la Communauté

Au deuxième trimestre de 1986, en données corrigées des variations saisonnières, le PIB de la Communauté s'est accru de 5.9 X, en équivalent de rythme annuel. Aux quatrième trimestre 1985 et premier trimestre 1986, la croissance était respectivement de 0.5 X et 1.3 X.

Aux Etats-Unis, la croissance tombe à 0.6 X au deuxième trimestre (contre 3.7 X au premier trimestre), en raison semble-t-il d'une baisse des exportations.

Au Japon, par contre, on enregistre une hausse de 3.6 X faisant suite au - 3.1 X du premier trimestre.

Pour le second trimestre 1986, la situation dans les principaux pays de la Communauté se présente comme suit :

croissance de 13.6 X, évolution positive de tous les agrégats

hausse de 4 X, bonne tenue de la demande intérieure

croissance de 3.8 X, baisse des importations

croissance de - 0.1 X, chute des investissements.

Evolution des prix : + 5.7 X en un an dans la Communauté

L'inflation moyenne annuelle du deuxième trimestre 1985 au deuxième trimestre 1986 est restée plus forte en Europe (estimation 5.7 X) qu'aux Etats-Unis (2.7 X) et au Japon (+ 2.6X).

Selon les pays de la Communauté, les prix du PIB augmentent légèrement en Allemagne (+ 3.8 X contre 3.0 X au 1er trimestre 1986), et en Italie (+ 10.2 X contre 9.5 X ) . En revanche, ils resteraient stables en France (estimés à 6.0 X). Par contre, on note une baisse du rythme au Royaume-Uni (3.7 X contre 5.6 X ) .

EXPLANATORY NOTES

This publication gives annual and quarterly trends in the main aggregates of national accounts, in volume and in price, for the following countries or groups : EUR 12, Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, and in addition the United States and Japan.

Sources of data :

The annual data are extracted from the ESA Aggregates sent to Eurostat by the national statistical offices.

The seasonally adjusted quarterly data are taken from national sources using their definitions and methods of seasonal adjustment and hence are not always perfectly comparable. For some countries two sources have to be used to cover all the aggregates.

The quarterly data shown for the Community is derived from the sum of data for the four countries available (D, F, I, UK) expressed in purchasing power standards. These four countries account for around 85 X of the total GDP of the Community of twelve.

Publication and storage of the data

The annual data are published in the Aggregates yearbook in the series "National accounts ESA" and are available in the statistical data base CRONOS SEC 1. The quarterly data are also available in CRONOS, in the ICG.

Les données annuelles sont extraites des résultats Agrégats-SEC envoyés à EUROSTAT par les Offices nationaux de statistique.

Les données trimestrielles désaisonnalisées sont reprises de la source nationale selon sa propre définition et méthode de désaisonnalisation et donc ne sont pas tout à fait comparables. Pour certains pays, deux sources sont nécessaires pour couvrir la totalité des agrégats.
