1,4-Butanediol (BDO)

AppeArAnCeColourless, nearly odourless liquid, soluble in water.

Harmful if swallowed.May cause drowsiness or dizziness.

Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/ eye protection/face protection.

LAwFUL UsesBDO is mainly used as an intermediate for common chemical and commercial products. It is used in the production of high-performance plastics and complex equipment made of polyurethane (e.g. golf balls, skateboard wheels, car bumpers), as a transfer agent for printing inks and as a cleaning agent.

UnLAwFUL Uses1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is a direct precursor of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). It is also an active principle which has the same effects as GHB.

NB: There are other analogues of this substance: gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and gamma-hydroxyvalerate (GHV).

LAwFUL UsesSubstance of extremely limited use in the manufacture of piperonal (also a precursor of ecstasy) and of constituents of perfume and used in the laboratory for organic synthesis.

UnLAwFUL UsesSubstance used in the illegal manufacture of different forms of ecstasy (MDA, MDMA and MDE), amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL)

AppeArAnCeFluid, colourless liquid with an unpleasant odour. Miscible with water, alcohol and other similar liquids. This substance is most often found in liquid or powder form, but also as a gel or as tablets.

Causes serious eye damage. Harmful if swallowed.May cause drowsiness or dizziness.Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/ eye protection/face protection.

Gamma-butyrolactone is neither explosive nor particularly volatile, but is, nonetheless, combustible. GBL is converted into gamma- hydroxybutyrate (GHB) in the body and brings about the same effects (helplessness, dizziness, euphoria in small doses: larger doses may result in coma, then death).

LAwFUL UsesSubstance commonly used in pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceutical products and vitamins, electrolytes in small batteries and accumulators, paint removers, strippers for cabinet making, solvents for resins and food flavourings (including slimming products, products for muscle development). GBL is used in the manufacture of products supplied to hospitals, for filtering drinks and for purification, for cleaning electronic circuits and in high-technology industry, in the manufacture of herbicides and in manufacturing processes for vitamins and pharmaceutical products.

GBL is chiefly used by industrial companies.

UnLAwFUL UsesGamma-butyrolactone (GBL) is a direct precursor of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). It is also an active principle which has the same effects as GHB.

NB: GHV, GBL and BDO (butane-1,4-diol) have the same effects.
