MY NAME IS DEREK SHULTZ. I AM FROM PLATTE CITY, MISSOURI. I GRADUATED VALEDICTORIAN OF MY HIGH SCHOOL. I SPEAK A LITTLE GREEK, A LITTLE SPANISH, AND A LOT OF ENGLISH. THESIS PROJECT: FEATURE PRESENTATION

ARCHITECTURE TODAY IS NOT REACHING THE FULL POTENTIAL OF ITS EXPERIENTIAL POSSIBILITIES AND IS BECOMING AN ART FORM THAT

IS FALLING TOWARD FUNCTION OVER EMOTION.

THE FALL OF 2010 WAS USED TO WRITE A THESIS PAPER THAT RESPONDED TO AN ISSUE IN ARCHITECTURE THAT THE STUDENT FOUND IMPORTANT. MY THESIS PAPER WAS BASED ON THE ARGUMENT THAT CINEMATIC AND FILMMAKING TECHNIQUES SUCH AS LIGHTING, SCALE, PERSPECTIVE, SCRIPT AND SOUNDTRACK COULD BE APPLIED TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IN ORDER TO CREATE A MORE EVOCATIVE AND EMOTIONALLY STIMULATING EXPERIENCE FOR THE VISITOR. A MUSEUM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FULLY IMMERSE THE OBSERVER INTO THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE MUSEUM AND PROVIDES AN EXCELLENT BASE TO BEGIN DESIGNING EXPERIENTIAL AND STIMULATING EXHIBT SPACES THAT ARE INTERACTIVE AND EDUCATIONAL. THIS MUSEUM WOULD TRAVEL TO FILM STUDIOS ALL OVER THE NATION IN ORDER TO RELATE TO THE ROOTS OF FILMMAKING.

UES INTO EXHIBIT SPACES THAT IT WAS THE STYLES OF THE EXHIBITS THEMSELVES THAT WOULD DICTATE THE DESIGN OF THE SPACE. THREE STYLES IN FILM HISTORY WERE CHOSEN BASED ON THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF FILM AND THEIR UNIQUELY INDIVIDUAL STYLES AND ATTRIBUTES. THESE THREE FILM STYLES WERE SILENT FILM, FILM NOIR, AND THE COMPUTER AGE. THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THESE STYLES WERE UNDERSTOOD AND CONDENSED TO THEIR PUREST FORMS BEFORE BEING IMPLEMENTED INTO AN EXHIBIT DESIGN THAT ARE MEANT TO FULLY IMMERSE THE VISITOR INTO THE FILM STYLE REPRESENTED. ALL OF THEIR SENES WILL BE FULLY EXPLORED AND HIGHLIGHTED TO CREATE AN INTENSE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SPACE AND THEREFORE A MORE FULLFILLING EXPERIENCE BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY.

OVERALL PLAN

SILENT FILM IS THE FIRST EXHIBIT WHICH UTILIZES TECHNIQUES FROM THIS ORIGIN STYLE OF FILM. AN ANECHOIC CHAMBER COMBINED WITH STARK LIGHTING CONTRAST CREATES A STRONG BOND BETWEEN VIEWER AND SPACE. THE PLOTS OF SILENT FILMS DICTATED TEH PATH OF THE VISITOR AS WELL.

FILM NOIR HAS WITHSTOOD TIME IN FILMMAKING AND USES LIGHT TO TELL ITS STORY. IN THE EXHIBIT A LIGHT EMITTING CUBE WORKS WITH THE SPACE TO PROVIDE UNIQUE SHADOWS AND OVERALL EXPERIENCES FOR THE VISITOR. THE CONSTANT PLOT TWISTS IN FILM NOIR DICTATE THE VISITOR’S SPIRALING PATH.

THE COMPUTER AGE IS BASED ON TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN COMPUTER GENERATION. THIS DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC IN STYLE IS AT THE HEART OF THIS FINAL EXHIBIT. LARGE GLASS WALLS GIVE VIEW TO A TWO STORY SPACE THAT UTILIZES COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY FOR ENTERTAINMENT. A MASSIVE LED ILLUMINATED CUBE SHINES THROUGHOUT THE SPACE AND INSIDE IS A 360 DEGREE SCREEN SHOWING BEHIND THE SCENES LOOKS AT NEW AGE FILMS. THE SPACE GIVES A FEELING A FAMILIARITY TO THE VISITOR AS IT RESEMBLES A PRESENT DAY MOVIE LOBBY, CONCESSION STAND AND ALL. THE SCALE OF THIS SPACE REPRESENTS THE SCALE OF THE COMPUTER AGE MOVIES.

COMPUTER AGE SECTION

THE WALL SECTIONS ABOVE SHOW MORE DETAILED AREAS OF EACH EXHIBIT SPACE. SILENT FILM WILL USE SOUND PODS THAT FOCUS SOUND ONLY WITHIN THAT SPACE. THIS WILL CREATE AN AWARENESS OF SOUND FOR THE VISITOR AND HEIGHTEN THEIR FOCUS IN THE VISIT. FILM NOIR USES A LIGHT EMITTING CUBE THAT IS DARK WITHIN TO HOLD SHOWINGS OF FILM NOIR FILMS. THE COMPUTER AGE EXHIBIT PROVIDES THE ADDED FEATURE OF TWO STORIES WITH A VIEWING WINDOW INTO THE LED CUBE. THIS GIVES THE VIEWER A LOOK INTO STURCTURE OF THE 360 DEGREE SCREEN. ALL OF THESE DESIGN DECISIONS ARE MEANT TO ENHANCE THE VIEWERS UNDERSTANDING OF THEIRS PACE AND FILM STYLE.

THESIS PROJECT: FEATURE PRESENTATIONMANY PRECEDENT FILMS WERE STUDIED TO CAPTURE THE APPROPRIATE TECHNIQUES WITHIN EACH EXHIBIT. THEIR TECHNIQUES ARE BROUGHT TO FRUITION WITHIN THE SPACE TO ENHANCE THE VISITIOR’S EXPERIENCE. WITHIN EACH SPACE, THE VISITOR IS PROVIDED WITH A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE TECHNOLOGY EMPLOYED TO CREATE THE EXPERIENCES AROUND THEM. WITHIN THIS SILENT FILM SPACE IS A VIEWING BOX THAT REVEALS THE MECHANISMS USED TO CREATE THE SOUND ZONES FOR EACH FILM BEING VIEWED. THIS COMBINED WITH THE TITLE CARD DISPLAYS GIVES A PROPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE FILM GENRE.

THESIS PROJECT: FEATURE PRESENTATIONFILM NOIR IS A COMPLEX FILMMAKING STYLE IN ITS MANY PLOT TWISTS AND VIVID USE OF LIGHT. THERE IS A BROAD RANGE OF FILMS WITHIN THIS GENRE THAT PROVIDE A WEALTH OF EXAMPLES IN TERMS OF STYLE AND PROCESS. WITH LIGHT BEING THE TOOL OF THIS TRADE IT SEEMED APPROPRIATE TO CREATE A LIGHT BOX THAT VISITORS WINDED AROUND IN HOPES OF ENTERING. ALONG THIS PATH THE LIGHT WILL PLAY WITH THE VISITOR UNTIL THEY FINALL ENTER AND SEE THE FILMS WITHIN. ONCE OUTSIDE THE CUBE AGAIN THEN THE VISITOR IS PRESENTED WITH MORE BEHIND THE SCENES INFORMATION THAT SHOWS THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPACE.

THESIS PROJECT: FEATURE PRESENTATIONTHE COMPUTER AGE EXHIBIT ALLOWED FOR UNIQUE EXPERIENCES BETWEEN THE DESIGNED SPACE AND THE VISITOR. LARGE OPEN SPACES, AN ELEVATOR, GLASS FACADES, AND THE ABILITY TO SEE A 360 DEGREE FILM ALL ENHANCE THE VISITORS EXPERIENCE BY PLACING THEM IN A SPACE THAT MAY NOT HAVE SEEMED REALISTIC. THE MAIN FEATURE OF THIS EXHIBIT IS THE GREEN SCREEN WALL THAT ALLOWS VISITORS TO PLACE THEIR BODIES WITHIN A FILM SEQUENCE FROM THIS GENRE. COMPUTER AGE IS ALL ABOUT BRINGING THE AUDIENCE INTO THE ENVIRONMENT AND THIS EXHIBIT IS USING THAT SAME STYLE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR THAT ONE COMMON GOAL.

THE PROJECT ABOVE IS A CHESS CAMP COMPLETED IN THE FALL OF 2007. IT WAS A FACILITY FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING A CHESS CAMP TO SIT AND RELAX WHILE ALSO PLAYING CHESS AND EXPERIENCING THE OUTDOORS. THE CAMP WAS LOCATED IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI ON A STEEP, FORESTED, SLOPE. THE ABOVE COMPUTER GENERATED MODELS WERE CREATED USING A COMBINATION OF REVIT ARCHITECTURE BY AUTODESK, GOOGLE SKETCHUP, AND AUTODESK 3D STUDIO MAX.

2007-2008

THE PROJECT BELOW IS A COMMUNITY ART GALLERY COMPLETED IN THE FALL OF 2008. IT WAS LOCATED IN AN ARTIST LIVE-WORK COMMUNITY ON CHASE STREET IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI. THE BUILING WAS DESIGNED TO IMPLEMENT DIGITAL MEDIA AND LIGHTING TO FORM A BEACON FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE BELOW COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGES WERE CREATED USING A COMBINATION OF REVIT ARCHITECTURE BY AUTODESK AND ADOBE PHOTOSHOP.

COMPUTER DESIGN

THE LOTUS HOUSE CASE STUDY MODEL SHOWN ABOVE WAS COMPLETED IIN THE FALL OF 2008. THIS HOUSE WAS DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT KENGO KUMA AND GAVE MY GROUP AND I THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THE FINER DETAILS OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND TECTONICS.

THE SUNSHINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION BELOW WAS COMPLETED IIN THE SPRING OF 2008. THIS BUILDING WAS LOCATED IN SPRINGFIELD MO AND REQUIRED A MODERN RENOVATION TO A HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT SCHOOL BUILDING THAT IS AN ICON TO THE COMMUNITY.

PHYSICAL CRAFT

2008-2009

THE ABOVE PROJECT WAS A N ADDITION TO THE HAMMONS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE IN SPRINGFIELD MO AND IT REQUIRED NEW CLASSROOMS, AN AUDITORIUM, OFFICES, PARKING, AND A WAY TO ATTACH TO WITHOUT ALTERING THE CURRENT STRUCTURE. A CONCEPT REFERRING TO A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH WAS USED AS THIS GREEN BUILDING WAS SUBMERGED INTO THE EARTH WITH A LARGE GLASS ATRIUM PROTRUDING AT THE END. MODELS OF HVAC AND STRUCTURE WERE USED TO SHOW THE DESIGN’S PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES.

THE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM OCCURED IN THE SPRING OF 2010. THE MAIN LOCATION OF THIS EXPERIENCE WAS LOCATED IN VOLOS, GREECE. TIME WAS ALSO SPENT IN NORTHERN GREECE, SOUTHERN GREECE, SOME GREEK ISLANDS AND ATHENS. OUTSIDE GREECE LOCATIONS INCLUDED ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT, CAIRO, EGYPT, AND ISTANBUL, TURKEY. FIELD NOTES WERE TAKEN THROUGHOUT THE TRIP TO ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE AND PROVIDE GOOD EXPERIENCE IN JOURNALING AND QUICK SKETCHES.

THE TIME IN VOLOS WAS SPENT LEARNING GREEK CULTURE AND TAKING CLASSES PROVIDED BY DRURY UNIVERSITY STAFF THAT INTRODUCED THE STUDENTS TO MEDITERRANEAN CULTURE, LANGUAGE, AND HISTORY. AN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO WAS ALSO ASSIGNED IN WHICH A PROJECT TO REDISGN A TRAIN DEPOT FOR MORE COMMUNITY ACCESS AND INVOLVEMENT WAS UNDERTAKEN.

THE KANSAS CITY CENTER OF PERFORMING ARTS WAS A COMMUNITY FACILITY COMPLETED IIN THE FALL OF 2010. THIS BUILDING WAS LOCATED ON A SITE SOUTH OF THE NELSON-ATKINS ART MUSUEM IN THE FRANK A. THEIS PARK. THE PROGRAM FOR THIS PROJECT WAS DIVIDED INTO FOUR PARTS WITH A STAGE THEATRE, MUSIC CONSERVATORY, DANCE HALL AND OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE. EACH OF THESE ELEMENTS, EXCEPT FOR THE AMPHITHEATRE, HAD BOTH EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AND A PERFORMANCE SPACE.

THE PLAN WAS DIVIDED INTO EIGHT FLOORS WITH TWO SEPERATE TOWERS THAT WERE CONNECTED BY AN ELEVATED OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE. THE DANCE HALL PROGRAM OCCUPIES THE BOTTOM SIX FLOORS OF ONE TOWER WHILE THE STAGE THEATRE PROGRAM OCCUPIES THE SIX FLOORS OF THE OTHER TOWER. THE MUSIC CONSERVATORY SPANS BETWEEN BOTH TOWERS, AND BENEATH THE AMPHITHEATRE IS A REFLECTING POOL.

THE BUILDING EXTERIOR WAS APPROACHED IN DIRECT COMMUNICATION TO THE SURROUNDING SITE AND ICONIC MUSUEM TO THE NORTH. FRANK A. THEIS PARK WAS A WELL MANICURED PARK THAT SHOULD NOT BE DISRUPTED. THE BUILIDING WAS DESIGNED IN TWO TOWERS AND FACED NORTH TO HIGHLIGHT THE AXIS ALONG THE PARK TOWARD THE NELSON-ATKINS ART MUSEUM. THE EXTERIOR MATERIAL OF CONCRETE WAS DONE IN A PATTERN TO RESEMBLE TREE BARK ON THE SITE AND ALSO EXPRESS PERMENANCE FOR THE COMMUNITY.

TWO LARGE LOBBIES ARE OPEN FOR THE TOP SEVEN FLOORS OF EACH TOWER AND CONNECT ALONG A GLASS WALKWAY BETWEEN THE TOP TWO FLOORS THAT ALSO PROVIDES A LOBBY FOR THE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE. A UNIQUE WINDOW AND HVAC SYSTEM WAS ALSO DESIGNED INTO THE CONCRETE EXTERIOR WALLS THAT MAINTAINS THE SIMPLE PATTERN AND PROVIDES UNIQUE AESTHETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL OUTCOMES.
