National collaborations I coordinate the TUDelft Perceptual Intelligence lab (Pi-lab), a collaboration between the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science and Industrial Design Engineering. The Pi-lab consists of three groups: the Sound, Visual Ergonomics and

Vision groups. Together with prof. Dr. Huib de Ridder, Dr. Maarten Wijntjes, and currently four PhD students, I form the Vision group. We collaborate with prof. Dr. Susan te Pas (Utrecht University) and prof. Dr. Ingrid Heynderickx (Technical University Eindhoven). In 2014 I intitialized an association of the Pi-lab with the Helmholtz Institute on PhD education and research. I collaborate with the Visual Experiences Group, Philips Research, on the experience, perception and physics of light fields, on perceptual interactions between material and lighting, and on the design of visual probes to semi-quantitatively measure lighting qualities. I collaborate with several other Philips departments in graduation projects on the design of lighting systems and with several lighting professionals and companies (e.g. ERCO, BeersNielsen, Deerns, KelvinNL) for graduation projects and my course on lighting design. I collaborate with museum het Prinsenhof, Delft, e.g. in the (lighting installation) design for the exhibition of Jan Schoonhoven’s work in 2015 and in publications and presentations related to that and the permanent exhibition. I collaborate with Prof. Dr. S.F. te Pas (Social Sciences, Helmholtz Institute, Utrecht) on experimental psychology in material, shape and light field perception. I collaborated with Drs. P.J. Boon (MICC-IKAT, Maastricht University) and Dr. G.J.M. van Oortmerssen (Groningen Institute of Archeology, University of Groningen) on photometric methods for archeological collections. I collaborate with dr. G.J. de Bruin-Hordijk (Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology) on (day)lighting and views of indoor spaces. Together with Dr. J.-M. Geusebroek (Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam) I collaborated in Dr. A.-S. Lehmann’s VENI-project "The Brush in the Computer. …". I collaborated with DOW Chemicals in studies into 3D textured plastics of car interiors (2001-2003). These collaborations resulted in several papers and technical reports. International activit ies I participate in the European project PRISM (started 1-1-2013, with 7 universities and 2 industrial partners, in Germany, Belgium, France, the UK, Turkey, Spain and the Netherlands), for which I advise two PhD students, I organized a network-meeting (April 2014), a focus group on Lighting design and technology and a workshop on teamwork, and regularly visit meetings with the other partners. I advise a PhD student on a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council. I participated as an invited speaker in the ESF Exploratory Workshop on Qualities in Perception Science, Rovereto, November 2-6, 2009, together with renowned researchers from psychology and computer science (Albertazzi –organizer, Barendregt, Biederman, Desolneux, Eklundh, Fleming, Gerbino, Griffin, van de Grind, Koenderink, Kovacs, Simner, Hurlbert, Mausfeld, Pinna, da Pos, van Tonder, Vatakis, Vishwanath, Wijntjes, Zucker). This meeting was followed up by a book in which I contributed a paper. I participated as an invited speaker in the workshop “Perception of Material Properties in 3D Scenes”, October 17-19, 2008, at the University of Pennsylvania, together with renowned researchers from the fields of human and computer vision (Adelson, Anderson, Bloj, Brainard, Chantler, Farid, Fleming, Foster, Gegenfurtner, Gilchrist, Hurlbert, Maloney, Nishida, Zaidi and Zickler). I participated in the European project VISIONTRAIN, for which I advised a PhD student as a co-promotor (graduated January 2010), I organized a mini-symposium in connection with the graduation and the midterm Review meeting in May 2007 and I regularly visited meetings with the other 10 partners. Ongoing collaboration (since 2006) with Katja Dörschner, Bilkent University, Turkey, resulted in several conference contributions and three papers. In 2003 I stayed in the USA (I was granted a TALENT fund for this visit) where I conducted research in collaboration with Prof. Nayar’s group (Department of Computer Science, Columbia University, USA), and with Prof. Hanrahan’s group (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Departments, Stanford University, USA). I participated in the European IST
