Emerging Chinese middle class, technology advances, changing consumer behaviour and government

policy are impacting consumer industries and opening opportunities in creative industries and sport

China is making a huge shift from a manufacturing and export led economy to a

consumption driven one. Services now make up more than 50% of the

economy overtaking the manufacturing sector, and the Chinese Government

recognises the creative sector as a pillar industry for Chinese economy

The size of China’s middle classes will transform industries, with the proportion

of middle class citizens expected to rise to 75% of the population by 2030, from

TV - China’s first TV station opened in 1958, now 3553 TV channels, including 68 satellite TV channels

(central and provincial), and many regional cable stations, wireless terrestrial broadcast stations, etc.

Film Market - 2nd largest globally, box office revenues will overtake US by 2018, double US by mid next

decade. Cinema screens in China reached 40,917 in 2016, surpassing the US to become first in the world

Animation Production - Chinese studios produce 226,000 mins of animated content every year, quality

animation for global studios, yet lack ability to create new popular stories and characters

Online Video - Growing fast, 600 online broadcasters beginning to disrupt traditional balance of power held

by state broadcasters, younger viewers are watching on their smartphones

Sports - The Chinese sports industry will amount to over three trillion yuan ($460 billion) by

the end of 2020, and will have 20,000 soccer academies by 2020

Publishing - China's book retail market saw strong growth in 2016 with a YoY rise of 12.3% in sales.

Book sales reached over 70 billion yuan ($10 billion), sales through online channels grew by 30% YoY

Advertising - China remains the world’s largest advertising market, with budget shifting to digital media.

The size of the digital advertising revenue market in China will be nearly $44 billion in 2017

Gaming - In 2016 there were an estimated 558.5 million gamers in China, of whom nearly 200 million

were ‘paying gamers’, spending on average $122 each over the course of the year
