State [Party]: SWEDEN reporting for time period from 01/01/2010 to 31/12/2010

[Narrative / reference to other reports:] During the period covered by this report (2010), Sweden has contributed at least 89 550 000 SEK to mine actions. Most of this, 89 million SEK, was channelled through the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). Projects supported by Sweden were directed mainly towards demining and awareness-raising in Afghanistan (Danish Demining Group-DDG), Iraq (DDG, Mines Advisory Group-MAG, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB via ICRC), Sudan (DDG), Sri Lanka (DDG), DRC (MAG, MSB), Somalia (MSB via UNMAS), Western Sahara (MSB). Sida’s support to the UN during 2010 consists of UNMAS core support and UNICEF (no cost extension of current agreement). The following, included in the above mentioned sum, were channelled through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs: a 200 000 SEK grant to ICBL-Landmine Monitor and a 350 000 SEK grant to the secretariat of the Ottawa Treaty, ISU. Through MSB (The Swedish Civil Contigencies Agency), Sweden provides personnel with a broad Mine Action expertise in UN Mine Action projects. MSB is also conducting Mine Action projects, training projects and excercises in cooperation with a number of Mine Action organizations and Mine Action bodies. MSB has in the reporting period been conducting Mine Action projects infollowing countries: Somalia, DR Congo, Iraq and Western Sahara.

SWEDEC is the country's focal point on technical matters, development education and training. Today SWEDEC is focused on education and training of individual officers and military units on Conventional Munitions Disposal (CMD) and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) as well as related research and development. Sweden is lead nation in the user group for EOD IS where SWEDEC offers an important contribution. Also SWEDEC contributes to relevant IT (IMSMA) development for UNMAS through GICHD.
