Amazing Faith

How amazing this thing called faith. For example, how amazing that the shepherds,

when the heavens were opened and the angels sang, could have believed that a Saviour was

born in Bethlehem and would be found in a cave among animals. How amazing! How unbeliev-

able! They should have said, “How can this be? Why should God open the heavens so that

angels should sing to lowly shepherds? Surely, if God had an announcement to make, He would

make it to Herod or to the high priest, not to us.” How astonishing that the shepherds should

have believed that they would find God’s Son being born not in a palace but in a stable? Yet

they believed!

How amazing that the Wise Men believed when they came to Jerusalem and found no

festivities for the birth of a prince. All was still. There would have been more commotion if a

calf or lamb had been born. The Wise Men might well have gone home. Instead, they inquired

and searched the Scriptures, and did not hesitate to go to tiny Bethlehem. How amazing that

they should believe that the Prince of Peace, the Wonderful Counselor, the Saviour of the world,

the Promised Messiah, would be born in a backwoods village instead of at Rome or Athens!

Αξιοθαύμαστη πίστη

Πόσο θαυμάσιο είναι αυτό που λέγεται «πίστη!». Πόσο αξιοθαύμαστη είναι η πίστη

των βοσκών που προσκύνησαν το νεογέννητο Χριστό που όταν είδαν ανοιχτούς τους ουρανούς

κι άκουσαν τους αγγέλους να ψάλλουν πίστεψαν, δίχως τον παραμικρό ενδοιασμό, ότι εκεί

κοντά τους, σε μια φάτνη τής Βηθλεέμ, γεννιόταν ο Σωτήρας του κόσμου. Ούτε καν

αναρωτήθηκαν: «Μα πώς είναι δυνατόν ο Θεός να φανερώνει σ’ εμάς τη γέννηση του Υιού του

και όχι στο βασιλιά Ηρώδη ή τους Αρχιερείς;». Όσο κι αν φαινόταν απίστευτο το να γεννηθεί ο

Υιός τού Θεού μέσα σε μια ταπεινή φάτνη και όχι σε ένα παλάτι, εκείνοι το πίστεψαν!

Πόσο αξιοθαύμαστη είναι η πίστη των Τριών Μάγων! Όταν έφτασαν στα Ιεροσόλυμα

δεν βρήκαν γιορτές που, όπως συνηθίζοταν, ανήγγειλαν σημαντικά γεγονότα και που θα έπρεπε

και τώρα να αναγγείλουν τη γέννηση ενός πρίγκηπα. Αντί, όμως, να επιστρέψουν στο τόπο

τους, έμειναν εκεί. Ζήτησαν και βρήκαν παλιές Γραφές που επεβεβαίωναν τη γέννηση ενός

Μεσσία κι ύστερα ακολούθησαν το δρόμο προς την ασήμαντη Βηθλεέμ. Φαινόταν απίστευτο

πως ο Πρίγκηπας της ειρήνης και Σωτήρας του κόσμου γεννήθηκε σ’ ένα ταπεινό χωριό αντί να

γεννηθεί στη Ρώμη ή την Αθήνα κι, όμως, εκείνοι το πίστεψαν!

Προθεσμία υποβολής αιτήσεων: 1η Φεβρουαρίου 2018 Η Ελληνική Κοινότητα Οττάβας ζητά εξειδικευμένο άτομο για τη θέση του διευθυντή/

διευθύντριας στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο το οποίο λειτουργεί υπό το πρόγραμμα «Διεθνείς Γλώσσες»

στο Δημόσιο Σχολείο Οττάβας “D. Roy Kennedy”. Οι υποψήφιοι πρέπει να είναι άτομα εργατικά

με ενθουσιασμό για το αντικείμενο απασχόλησής των και να έχουν ικανότητες προγραμματισμού

διδακτέας ύλης καθώς και ικανότητες, διοικητικές, επικοινωνίας, επίλυσης προβλημάτων και

διαχείρισης προϋπολογισμού. Επιπλέον, οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να έχουν ως στόχο την έμπνευση

ενθουσιασμού και αγάπης για την μάθηση της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας, σε δασκάλους και μαθητές.

«Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation» Υποτροφίες

To πρόγραμμα αυτό προσφέρει δύο υποτροφίες εκ 1000 δολαρίων η κάθε μία, σε μαθητές/

μαθήτριες που απεφοίτησαν από το Λύκειο (12η τάξη) κατά το 2017 και έχουν εγγραφεί για πλήρη

φοίτηση στο Πανεπιστήμιο για σπουδές κατά το τρέχον ακαδημαϊκό έτος. H ημερομηνία λήξεως

Χριστουγεννιάτικα καλάθια – Ευχαριστούμε τους δωρητές!

Τα μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας επιθυμούν να ευχαριστήσουν

όλους όσοι δώρησαν τρόφιμα, χρήματα ή βοήθησαν κατά την

προετοιμασία των χριστουγεννιάτικων καλαθιών. Με τη δική σας

συνεισφορά είμαστε, και πάλι, σε θέση να βοηθήσουμε 150 οικογένειες

που έχουν ανάγκη. Για όσους δεν πρόλαβαν να συνεισφέρουν, μπορούν να

κάνουν, ακόμα και τώρα, τη δωρεά τους προς τη Φιλόπτωχο Αδελφότητα.

Στη επόμενη εκπομπή «Ελληνικό Καλειδοσκόπιο» που θα μεταδοθεί από το καλωδιακό

κανάλι “Rogers Cable 22”, την Παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων στις 9.30 το πρωί, ανήμερα

των Χριστουγέννων στις 5.30 το απόγευμα και στις 30 Δεκεμβρίου στις 9.30 το πρωί, θα

δείτε την Χριστουγεννιάτικη εκδήλωση που θα λάβει χώρα σήμερα στον ιερό μας ναό καθώς

και μήνυμα του πατρός Αλέξανδρου. Επίσης θα δείτε στιγμιότυπα από την «Βραδιά

Ταβέρνας» που διοργάνωσε ο Σύλλογος Ηλικιωμένων και κοινοτικά νέα.

Let all the earth worship you, and sing praises to you.

BRETHREN, when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman,

born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive

adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,

The Gospel Reading: St. Matthew 2:1-12

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,

behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been

born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship

him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and

assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the

Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the

prophet: 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the

rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'"

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the

star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child,

and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When

they had heard the king they went their way; and lo the star which they had seen in the East

went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the

star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with

Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they

offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return

to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης – Κοπή της βασιλόπιτας, 7 Ιανουαρίου

Το ετήσιο γεύμα για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας θα πραγματοποιηθεί την

Κυριακή, 7 Ιανουαρίου στο Κοινοτικό μας Κέντρο, στις 12 μ.μ. Είστε

όλοι ευπρόσδεκτοι, σε αυτή την πρώτη, κοινή μας συνάντηση για το νέο

έτος, κατά την οποία ο πατήρ Αλέξανδρος θα ευλογήσει και θα κόψει την

βασιλόπιτα. Τα εισιτήρια είναι 30 δολ. για ενήλικες, 15 δολ. για παιδιά 7-

12 ετών και δωρεάν για παιδιά κάτω των 6 ετών. Όσοι θέλουν να

Hellenic History Tournament The Ottawa AHEPA chapter is looking for High School students, Grades 8-12, to compete in

a live JEOPARDY-like Hellenic History Tournament. Students in groups of 3 will com-

pete on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at York University in Toronto for the $4500 cash prize.

Christmas Baskets THANK YOU

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society would like to thank everyone who donated food,

funds and their time to make this year’s Christmas baskets program a success. We were able

to help 150 families this year. If you wanted to contribute and didn't yet have the opportunity

to do so, you can still make a monetary donation to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society.

The next Hellenic Kaleidoscope program, televised on Rogers Cable channel 22 in Ottawa,

will be aired on Christmas Eve at 9:30 a.m., on Christmas Day at 5:30 p.m. and again on De-

cember 30th at 9:30 a.m. This edition of the program will feature highlights from the Celebra-

tion of Christmas (taking place at our church today), a message from Fr. Alex, highlights from

the Senior Citizens Association’s “Taverna Night” and news of our Community.

Prayer for Christian Unity - January 21st

Everyone is invited to join Fr. Alex and our choir as they participate in the

Prayer for Christian Unity service at St. Mark’s Anglican Church

(1606 Fisher Ave.) on Sunday, January 21st at 5:00 p.m.

Refreshments will follow.

The “Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship”

The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated from

High School (Grade 12) in 2017 and entered University as full time students. The

application deadline for the scholarships is February 2, 2018. All applicants

must be members of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. Detailed information

Philoptochos Vasilopita Luncheon - January 7

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society’s annual Vasilopita Luncheon will

be heldat the Banquet Centre on Sunday, January 7th at 12:00 noon. Every-

one is welcome and encouraged to attend our first gathering of the year as

one Community family where Father Alex will Bless and cut the Vasilopita.

Tickets are $30 for Adults, $15 for Children 7-12 years of age, and free for

The event will be hosted by AHEPA Toronto with the York Univer-

sity Hellenic Studies Program & the HHF Chair of Modern Greek

History - Dr. Sakis Gekas. Deadline for entry is January 15,

2018. The Ottawa AHEPA chapter is willing to sponsor any team

that wants to go (including travel + registration), as well as provide

academic coaching.

The Hellenic Community of Ottawa is seeking an innovative and qualified

Greek School Director to join the International Language Program faculty at

D. Roy Kennedy Public School in Ottawa, Ontario. Applicants must be hard-

working and enthusiastic with a strong administrative acumen. The position

will require applicants’ to display strengths in curriculum planning, multi-

tier communications, teacher / program administration, conflict resolution

and budget management. The applicant will be a motivated individual with a

keen interest in encouraging and inspiring teachers and their students to love

learning and excel in the subject area of the Greek language.

AHEPA Comedy Night – January 26

The Ottawa Chapter of AHEPA is hosting a Comedy Night featuring come-

dian Basile on Friday, January 26th at the Banquet Centre. Doors open at

7:00 pm, with the show starting at 8:30. Tickets are $50 per person.
