Application Guide

Additive level of blending process and Pigment level of coaster process

In blending process, several additives such as aluminumsulfate, clay, talc, and calcium carbonate are pasted on thepaper to prevent the ink from blotting, and to smooth thepaper. Pigment (Kaolinite) is pasted on color printingpapers to prevent the ink from blotting. Model CG and KSVseries are ideal for heavy viscosity and build up.

High level detection of acrylic resin (solids) and dissolved resin by solvent (liquid)

Model CG withstands static electricity and heavy build-up.To consider chemical resistance, probe material is 316Stainless Steel, and insulator is PTFE with FPM/FKM O-ring.

Cement silo at finishing process

Cement and its raw material normally contain moisture.Model CG and K series are not affected by the change ofmoisture and build- up. On the other hand, dry cement fedby a pneumatic conveyor holds high static electricity.Model CG and K series, however, discharge it, as the sensorhas an earth terminal.

Application Guide

Pharmaceutical (Solid Tablet)

Lubricants are used to add into mixed powders to avoid itfrom sticking to the hopper or to the tablet machine.Model CG and K series show stable operation althoughlubricants are fluidized.

The pneumatic conveyor

The pneumatic conveyor transmits plastic resins or powderswith pneumatic pressure. Model CG and K series aresuitable for high level detection in this pressurized hopper toprevent powders from sticking to the probe. It withstandsstatic electricity by discharging to the earth.

Interface detection

Model CG and KRV series are ideal for the interfacedetection of two immiscible liquids. Interface detectionbetween oil and water is typical application. The outputrelay is energized by water and de-energized by oil.

Products Overview

We, NOHKEN INC., have plenty of experience with capacitance levelsensor for more than 30 years, and we consolidate all experience intoCG series. CG series employ phase detection principle which thechanging of resonance frequency is processed by microprocessor(digital circuit) and the changes in capacitance value is detected bychanges in frequency value.

Principle of Operation

The basic oscillator circuit is of the parallel resonance circuit with L (coil) and C (capacitance between

the electrodes). The oscillation frequency (f) of this circuit is: f = 1/2 π √LC. The frequency without

material around the sensor (f1) is: f1 = 1/2 π √LC, where C is the capacitance without material aroundthe sensor (zero point). With material around the sensor, the capacitance increases (C+ΔC), and the

frequency (f2) is: f2 = 1/2 π √L(C+ΔC), where C+ΔC is the capacitance with material around the sensor(span point). The sensor detects the frequency change from f1 to f2, and gives a relay output. Thefrequency range can be divided into 8 segments (between zero and span), and the set and reset pointscan be set on desired segments, thus enabling high limit, low limit and hysteresis settings.

KR SeriesCapacitance Level Sensor (Parallel Resonance Circuit)

Products Overview

The KR series of capacitance sensors are designed for point leveldetection of liquids, solids, powder, or interface between two immiscibleliquids. The radio frequency sensors are typically used to detect liquids,but have a difficult time with solids or powder materials. The KR seriesovercome this limitation by having a parallel resonance circuit on itsoscillator and five switch selected sensitivity ranges. The KR series easilydetect solids and powder materials such as plastic powder and pellet, flyash, carbon black, and similar substances. The KR series reliably detectthe interface between two immiscible liquids, oil and water as anexample. The KR series can be set to operate in water but not in oil.

Principle of Operation

When the electrode is in free air, the oscillation circuit synchronizes with the detection circuit. Whenthe electrode is in the medium, the synchronization between the oscillation circuit and detection circuitbreaks with the capacitance of the medium being taken in. This difference is then converted into therelay output.

Sensitivity Settings for Applications

"A" sensitivity: more than 0.5 pF, ∞ to 100kΩ

For solids and liquids (ε S≦1.1) such as Aluminum powder, Calcium carbonate, Cement, Fly ash, Ink,Paint, Plastic resin, etc.

"B1" sensitivity: more than 3pF, 100kΩ to 50kΩ

For solids and liquids (εS≦2.2) such as Coffee powder, Feed, Flour, Oil, Starch, etc.

"B2" sensitivity: more than 5pF, 50kΩ to 30kΩ

For solids and liquids (εS≦3.0) such as Grain, Sand, Sugar, Water, etc.

"C" sensitivity: more than 200pF, 2kΩ to 200Ω

For solids and liquids (εS≦50) such as Dehydrated cake, Drainage, Night sol, Sewage, Slurry, etc.

"D" sensitivity: more than 4000pF, 500Ω to 2Ω

KS SeriesCapacitance Level Sensor (Series Resonance Circuit)

Products Overview

KS series of capacitance sensors are made specifically for point level detectionof conductive medium. Applications include water, chemical solutions, acidbased slurries, conductive granules, and sticky liquids. Buildup is one of mostcommon problems for capacitance sensors. The radio frequency sensorsolves this problem by using a guard probes. But complicated probeconstruction tends to make probe easily broken. KS series overcome thislimitation by using the series resonance circuit and single electrode. Thiscircuit corrects for conductive buildup by measuring its resistance. Thesingle electrode can be mounted in vertically and position and is availablewith a number of standard mounting.

Principle of Operation for KS series

The electrode of KS series is a part of the oscillation circuit. When the electrode is in the free air, theoscillation is stopped. When it is in medium, the oscillation is restored by measuring capacitance ofmedium and the relay is energized.

Sensitivity Settings for Applications

H Range: more than 5pF, R=more than 1.5kΩAlcohol, Syrup, Water paint, Tap water

L Range: more than 90pF, R=more than 800ΩSlurry, Pulp, Mixed concrete, Caustic soda, Sodium chloride, Dehydrated cake

Ignores Heavy Conductive Buildup

The characteristic of KSV circuit is defined by:

① b>ω c: Oscillation stops (The electrode is in the air.)

② ωb<ω c: Oscillation starts (The electrode in in the medium.)

③ ω b=1/(C+Δ C)・R.

ωb: Frequency when the electrode is covered by medium.

ωc: Adjusted frequency when the electrode is in air.C: The stray capacitance of the electrode.Δ C: The capacitance of medium.R: Resistance of medium.

When a conductive resistance builds up forms on the electrode, ωb increases as R falls (③). This

means ωb>ωc so that oscillation can not start (①). When actual medium level is covering the

electrode, ωb decrease by taking in ΔC (③). This means ωb<ωc so that oscillation starts andthe relay energizes. In this way, by taking resistance of conductive buildup and cancelingcapacitance of that, KSV prevents false relay trips.
