IMPORTANT - SAFETY MESSAGE!Fraternity & Sorority Community Leaders,

We are so excited that many of you are preparing to initiate your new members! This is an exciting time of year. Unfortunately, this is also a time when many new members are hazed in order to gain entry into their organizations. Below are tips to remind you of appropriate activities to prepare your new members for initiation.                                                                                                                                             Many of our groups finish their new member programs with two to seven days of full-time activity.  The week before initiation is a great time to bond with your new member class and have them bond with each other. Some ways to do this include the following:

• Host brotherhood/sisterhood events- spend time together as a chapter.  Host a dinner together, go bowling, be creative!  This should be a time just for your current members and new members without worrying about inviting others.

• Many of your national new member requirements include passing a test about your organization's history.  It is very important that your new members pass this test, and this is the responsibility of the entire chapter, not just the new member educator.  A great way to assist their new members in studying for their test is to make a game out of it. BINGO, Jeopardy, and Trivia are all great games that can be tailored to your organization to help your new members meet these national requirements and remind initiated members of your organization's history.

• Making new members dress in silly outfits the week before initiation is hazing.  Consider picking a day and having the entire chapter dress in business attire and wear your badges/new member pins to show how important the week is to your entire chapter.

• Host a workshop on understanding the philosophy of your fraternity or sorority.  Some ideas include the following:◦ Role of fraternities and sororities on

our campus and within the greater Orlando community.

◦ Brotherhood/sisterhood◦ Chapter Unity

• Host a service event for the entire chapter and your new members.  This is a great way for the entire organization to bond, give back to the community, and live out your values.

• Prepare your new members for initiation.  We know that the actual initiation ceremony is Ritual and you cannot share this with your new members until they have been through the ceremony; however, it is helpful to prepare them for what they can expect at initiation.  Explain to them what they will need to wear and who they can expect to see in the initiation room. Host any pre-initiation workshops mandated by your national organization.

• Make sure your chapter hosts a post-initiation workshop for your new members to discuss your Ritual more in depth. This is also a great opportunity to discuss Ritual with your chapter members in order to remind them of the importance of your Ritual and values.

These are some simple ways to help bring your new members officially into your chapter and to continue to bond. What is your chapter doing before initiation to help everyone get excited about initiation? We would love to hear from you! Please email our GA, Freddy, at [email protected]. The most creative ideas will be showcased in the next issue of the FSL Creed. Have a safe and wonderful weekend! Charge On!

Assorted Flavas is an Annual Multicultural Talent Show. It was started in 2004 and this year marked our 10th Annual Assorted Flavas. This year's theme was Flava Fest. Each year Da Blaaazin' Beta Theta Chapter gives away the A.L.A.S. Scholarship (which stands for Aspiring Latinas Ahora y Siempre). This year we gave away $600 to an incoming student, Claire Rony. This event also raises awareness and funds for our national philanthropy St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. is the only Latin organization to partner with St. Jude for their Give Thanks Walk in November. UCFHOMECOMINGHomecoming has been a tradition at UCF since its earliest years.

Traditionally, Homecoming is an opportunity for Alumni to revisit and reconnect with their Alma Mater. It is also a time for students to exhibit

their pride in their school, putting aside other affiliations and raising morale and spirit. Go Knights!
