We have a common vision to make connec-tions: Between artists and art; Between friends and strangers; Between cultures. Through our actions, we want to encourage other artists to work together on this idea and this is the rea-son why ‚Art-in-Kamilari‘ exists.
It is a great pleasure for us to announce the fourth annual art exhibition in Kamilari. What started as an experiment and a crazy idea, with just three weeks to plan, only 5 artists and 4 locations. Has grown into an event involving al-most all the tavernas and kafenéia of the village and the participation of 26 artists from Kamilari and surrounding villages.
This year we feature photographers, painters and sculptors at various locations. . The con-cept includes informal tours and discussions about the art shown. You will find us around enjoying the exhibitions. We are happy that the Palmhouse, provided by René Triebl, will allow us again to exhibit works by all the participating artists in one place. We are delighted to exhibit in FABRIKA in co-operation with the Cultural Association of Kami-lari – with a special Thank Youto Papa Michalis.
THE ART LOCATIONS
Christos’ Museum is an important part of the ex-hibition and you are very welcome to come by and say hello. The „Kamilari Art Gallery“ will also exhibit work by a number of artists. Eva Kala will be deligh-ted to show you around.
We would like to thank all the participating ve-nues for welcoming art into their tavernas and kafenéia – a lovely combination of food for sto-mach, spirit and eyes. With your support and enthusiasm, for art and artists, Art-in-Kamilari has grown and become a regional success. We also thank the members of Kamilari‘s Cultu-ral Committee for their support.
And finally, we would like to thank Mrs Irini Ni-koloudakis for her warm encouragement and enthusiasm for art and artists from the very first day this idea was born. Thank you, Kamilari, for making Art-in-Kamilari possible.

Eva, Grethe, IIona

TATJANA BUSCHE fine art
I discovered Crete in 1986. First walking with a backpack, then by moped and later by car I have visited many places. But, I always return to the south coast. For a few years I have been coming for several months of the year and experiencing different seasons. I used to travel to Crete especially in the spring, but now I am very excited about the winter too.My paintings are mainly abstract. They are often black-and-white or in different shades of blue. A friend asked a provocative question, „can you also colourful and cheer-ful?“. This has prompted me to seek out brighter colours. Some pictures come fast and easy, but most demand work with long processes and sometimes with strength.

Born in Denmark, grew up in Italy and now living in Crete. Since child-
hood interested in design, architecture and furniture, hence after artis-
tic studies in Turin and different work experiences with restorations of
churches, I made a job out of my passion. I deal with house and shop
decorations, kids‘ room, murales, mosaics with new and broken tiles
(counters, bathrooms, kitchens, coloums, swimming pools, Bars), renew
old furniture, paint fake rugs on all kind of floors... all this from the
project phase to the execution. Parallel to my work I paint, most as a
hobby. I have participated in several exhibitions on the island of Crete.
In 2018 I founded „ΑΤΕΛΙΕ“, an association that promote artistic and
cultural events.

I trained as an engineer and spent my working life in IT. I have spent more time using PowerPoint than a paintbrush. About eight years ago a friend started an informal art group. We meet on Sundays, paint, provide encouragement and have a potluck lunch. A teacher (Sharma Fenton, Saktouria) gave me an introduction to painting with acrylics. Later, I took some workshops in mosaics and linocuts. I take most of my inspiration from the plants growing in our garden. My work has no purpose other than the enjoyment it gives me. email: [email protected]

The artist, illustrator and graphic designer Susanne Kontopides lives and works as an occupational-therapist, freelance artist and teacher of painting classes since 2010 on the island of Crete (Greece). For the first time in this exhibition, I show works made with liquid acrylic paint on canvas. For this I experiment with the technique of “acrylic pouring”. I especially like that the results are only partially controllable and always have a surprise factor. This challenges me, as an artist, to trust more and more the flow of creative laws of nature. email: [email protected]: www.susanne-kontopides.eutel: 0030 6984003794

When I retired four years ago I started attending classes with Martina. Before I couldn’t even ima-gine drawing a house on a piece of paper and now I am so happy and satisfied being able to express myself through paintings. NATASCHA RAUPRICH fi ne art
The landscape of Crete is full of magic. Wild gorges, barren ridges, ancient holm-oak forests and breathtaking coastlines lying as close to each other, as hardly anywhere else. After my walks, I felt inspired for days. I connected places on the map, studied satellite imagery, searched new routes. Sometimes I intuitively found my way; sometimes I encountered obstacles or lost my way in the seemingly untouched landscape, I found half decayed Mitatas (mountain huts), enclosed springs, protective caves and stone steps, smoothed out in centuries. Fascinated, I recognized the archaic network of paths, which is orientated towards water and accessible terrain, as old as the relationship between man and mountain. Here every stone breathes history, Earth history in geologic layers and fossils, but also human history. Here already the Minoans wandered to their places of worship, the Cretan resistance fi ghters hid themselves from the many different occupants of the island. Generations of shepherds lived here in the annual rhythm with their animals every year to feed their families with milk and cheese. And yet it always remains a special, a magical and adventurous world; a world that requires respect. Here nature has the say and determines our scope. Here, too, we learn about abundance and wealth: fl owers, herbs, wild orchids, ancient trees and bizarre rock formations. My wish is, to show these soulful landscapes and convey a piece of the magic, that is inherent in them.

My motivation to work on Crete:Crete is a magic island. The Minoan culture is still living in the landscape, stones and people, that gives me energy and my positive thinking about the world and life. You will find all this in my artwork. To come to Crete is to come home for me, to be at the right time in the right place. This is the village Lagolio, where I live.
My motivation to work with stone:The reliability of the stone on the one side and the resis-tance on the other side give patience and inner peace. Most of my art work is made by hand.

They reflect for me the desire of creating a kind of personal paradise, expression of the desire for an ideal world, for beauty and harmony. They are often created with minimum re-sources and slender means, but always as an alternative world to the everyday life in order to build some kind of a “small paradise” in its best sense, following the imagi-nation of its historic origin as a walled or fenced garden (oldpersian:“pairi-daeza”- fenced plot ) a place to recrea-te, socialise and enjoy.

He first began taking photos and then also took up his old passion for painting to express his love for the trees and the Cretan landscape.
Later he was inspired by the famous poet Jannis Ritsos and after translating his poem Romiosini (Greecety) into French, he created a cycle of paintings as a hommage to the poet that was exhibited 2012 in the Town Hall of Heraklion.
He continues as a writer, is close to publishing an important
novel in French and still following with abstract painting. tel 0030 695 55 24 876

lMy art originally resorted to the „rubbish“ of consumer society, so it was obvious to craft the first objects primarily from scrap. Finds and „rubbish“ remain an inspiration for my creative work today. I understand this work as an exchange between the material found and specifically chosen on the one side and its history on the other side, a history that isalways the history of humans as well. The work of the artist, too, takes place within the frame work predetermined by society. Nevertheless, „freedom“ exists in those mo-ments, in which art does not have to follow economic necessities in every detail. Some of my objects and sculptures are shown here. They have their price, since the existence of the artist is bound to money and commodities as well.
