and a saint of the modern age, that God-inspired servant of Christ, Nektarios.

So, let us honor him. He pours out all kinds of healing to those who pray

    with faith and cry out reverently, "Glory to Christ who glorified you;

  • Christ is in our midst!

As we prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday, it may be difficult to be

thankful as we look back over the past year. We endured a Covid-19

Pandemic which completely disrupted our lives, observed an increase in

racial tensions, observed an increase of violence, stressed out during a

contentious election and underwent other forms of suffering. Saint Paul

commands us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for

you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). I want to reflect on things we

    can be thankful for.

I can not tell how many people that have shared with me how the quarantine

has become a great blessing. It created family time that our busyness had

deprived us. It allowed family relationships to improve and just become

closer as a family. Seeing all that has gone on around us has allowed us to

reflect and change our perspective on life. Things which seemed important

seem less so. We have a chance to reset our values and priorities.

As a community we have a lot to be thankful for and I wish to share a few.

We can be thankful for the number of kids we have, they are the future of

the church. There were over sixty kids before the pandemic. We are very

blessed and now have four nice classrooms, a combination

classroom/conference room, a kitchenette, a computer room, and priest

office. All the classrooms have large dry erase boards and there are desks

for the older student. This demonstrates to our kids that we value them, and

we recognize the importance of a strong Religious Education program.

We can be thankful the parish continues to be liturgically and sacramentally

active. Although limited by the pandemic, we worship not only on Sundays,

but worship on weekdays for major feast days. With increased liturgical

activity we increase our parish prayer life. Even when we cannot attend

these services, we as a community are lifted up in prayer.

The 2019 festival was a great blessing. It placed us in the financial position

that we could endure the financial challenges imposed by the Covid-19

    5

MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN HAYDEN HABY:

  • pandemic. As we approach this year’s unique drive through festival, let us

count our blessings and know that God will provide for our every need.

Our potential to grow as a church gives us a reason to be thankful. We have

great diversity in our parish which means we can worship as the complete

body of Christ. We need to embrace these blessings and continue to grow

the parish and increase the church activities for these children. We need to

step up our game with increased stewardship and continue to impress on all

our parishioners the need to sacrificially give to the Church. We also need

to step up our game by getting to church earlier and more frequently.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

    Blessings,

    Fr. John Hayden Haby

    MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN HAYDEN:

  • Saints Cosmas and Damian

    November 1

The Holy Wonderworkers and Unmercenary Physicians Cosmas and

Damian and their mother Saint Theodota were natives of Asia Minor (some

sources say Mesopotamia). Their pagan father died while they were still

quite small children. Their mother raised them in Christian piety. Through

her own example, and by reading holy books to them, Saint Theodota

preserved her children in purity of life according to the command of the

Lord, and Cosmas and Damian grew up into righteous and virtuous men.

Trained and skilled as physicians, they received from the Holy Spirit the

gift of healing people’s illnesses of body and soul by the power of prayer.

They even treated animals. With fervent love for both God and neighbor,

they never took payment for their services. They strictly observed the

command of our Lord Jesus Christ, “Freely have you received, freely give.”

(Mt. 10:8). The fame of Saints Cosmas and Damian spread throughout all

the surrounding region, and people called them unmercenary physicians.

Once, the saints were summoned to a grievously ill woman named Palladia,

whom all the doctors had refused to treat because of her seemingly hopeless

condition. Through faith and through the fervent prayer of the holy brothers,

the Lord healed the deadly disease and Palladia got up from her bed

perfectly healthy and giving praise to God. In gratitude for being healed and

wishing to give them a small gift, Palladia went quietly to Damian. She

presented him with three eggs and said, “Take this small gift in the Name

of the Holy Life-Creating Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Hearing

the Name of the Holy Trinity, the unmercenary one did not dare to refuse.

When Saint Cosmas learned what had happened, became very sad, for he

thought that his brother had broken their strict vow. On his deathbed he gave

instructions that his brother should not be buried beside him. Saint Damian

also died shortly afterward, and everyone wondered where Saint Damian’s

grave should be. But through the will of God a miracle occurred. A camel,

which the saints had treated for its wildness, spoke with a human voice

saying that they should have no doubts about whether to place Damian

    7

  • beside Cosmas, because Damian did not accept the eggs from the woman

as payment, but out of respect for the Name of God. The venerable relics of

the holy brothers were buried together at Thereman (Mesopotamia).

Many miracles were worked after the death of the holy unmercenaries.

There lived at Thereman, near the church of Cosmas and Damian, a certain

man by the name of Malchus. One day he went on a journey, leaving his

wife all alone for what would be a long time. He prayerfully entrusted her

to the heavenly protection of the holy brothers. But the Enemy of the race

of mankind took on the appearance of one of Malchus’ friends, and planned

to kill the woman. A certain time went by, and this man went to her at home

and said that Malchus had sent him to bring her to him. The woman believed

him and went along. He led her to a solitary place intending to kill her. The

woman, seeing that disaster threatened her, called upon God with deep faith.

Two fiercesome men then appeared, and the devil let go of the woman and

fled, falling off a cliff. The two men led the woman home. At her own home,

bowing to them deeply she asked, “My rescuers, to whom I shall be grateful

to the end of my days, what are your names?”

They replied, “We are the servants of Christ, Cosmas and Damian,” and

became invisible. The woman with trembling and with joy told everyone

about what had happened to her. Glorifying God, she went up to the icon of

the holy brothers and tearfully offered prayers of thanksgiving for her

deliverance. And from that time the holy brothers were venerated as

protectors of the holiness and inviolability of Christian marriage, and as

givers of harmony to conjugal life. From ancient times, their veneration

    spread also to Russia.

The Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Asia Minor should not be

confused with the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome (July

1), or the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Arabia (October 17).

  • St. Nektarios November 9

When we think of saints, we often think of people who lived centuries ago. St. Nektarios, on the contrary, lived and died in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Born in Selyvria, Thrace (part of present day Turkey), in October of 1846 as Anastasios Kephalas, Nektarios (his ordained name) began working and studying in Constantinople at age 14. Six years later he traveled to the island of Chios and entered a monastery. From there, he went to serve under Patriarch Sophronios, of Alexandria, Egypt.

Patriarch Sophronios liked Nektarios very much and sent him to study theology at the University of Athens, Greece. After he finished his studies, the patriarch appointed him priest and preacher in Cairo, Egypt. Soon thereafter, Nektarios was ordained Bishop and assigned in Cairo. It seemed as though Bishop Nektarios had one success after another, but people do not become Saints without difficulty and many thorns. So it was with Bishop Nektarios. Some people who disliked him and were jealous of his success made up lies about the good bishop. Patriarch Sophronios was swayed and took everything away from Nektarios. Nektarios returned to Athens where he was invited to preach at different churches. In Athens his great wisdom was realized and he became Dean of a theological school there in 1894.

Bishop Nektarios’ spiritual callings were perhaps more fulfilled when he started a convent for nuns on a small island not too far from the seaport of Piraeus, Greece. On Aegina, Bishop Nektarios founded the Convent of the Holy Trinity. It

    12

  • was here at his convent that Nektarios would make his greatest contributions to the Orthodox Church. In 1910 Nektarios retired to the Convent of the Holy Trinity to spend his last years. People flocked to Aegina to worship with the bishop, to listen to his sermons, and to be healed from different illnesses.

St. Nektarios died on November 9, 1920 and was buried in a special chapel which he had built. People continued to flock to the Convent of the Holy Trinity, to pay their respects at the Shrine of St. Nektarios. Miracles continue to take place at his grave site year after year. Eventually, the Patriarchate of Constantinople proclaimed Nektarios a Saint in 1961. St. Nektarios is considered the Patron Saint for people who have cancer, heart trouble, arthritis, epilepsy and other sicknesses. Visitors to this shrine leave filled with the love and peace that St. Nektarios gave to all when he lived.

St. Nektarios is a true icon of Christian love and patience. We are all called to love all people and to encourage them. As people of faith, we offer prayers as a means of help for all. St. Nektarios encouraged others by being with them at difficult times. He prayed to God to give them peace and courage to face their problems. We take him as our example.

St. Nektarios is honored and remembered annually on November 9.

  • Saint Catherine November 25

Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an

exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and

illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the

passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant

of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been

gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the

crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai,

where they were discovered many years later; the

famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and

the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint

Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th

of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement

of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were

interchanged at the request of the Church and

Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more

festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the

Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates.
