Eresos, birthplace of Sappho and one of the best-known cities of Archaic Lesbos, is rarely mentioned in the rel-evant literature since so few finds from the Archaic period have been published. A small part of this gap has now been filled by the finds from a recent excavation beneath the acropolis of the an-cient city, which brought to light successive occupational strata from the LH- to the 4th c. AD. The Archaic phase of the buildings yielded a large quantity of local plain pot-tery (Grey Ware and unpainted ware), and a number of imported vessels. From Chios came transport and table amphoras, oino-choai, cups and two-handled egg-shell bowls, and from Northern Ionia three fragments of characteristic Bird Bowls / kotylai, one fragment of a dinos and fragments of fruit bowls or dishes, mostly from Clazomenae or Teos. Mainland Greece is represented by a small group of Middle and Late Corinthian pottery, including part of a krater with a banquet scene and two aryballoi, one with a floral ornament and the other decorated with bands and dots. One sherd, depicting a panther(?), could be consid-ered as an imitation of Corinthian ware. Attic pottery is represented solely by the rims and bases of cups and sky-phoi of the early Attic type, and fragments of lamps from the late 6th and early 5th c.

The Aeolian pottery is particularly interesting, on ac-count of three sherds of Wild Goat ware attributed to the London Dinos Painter or his workshop, which is placed in Larissa on Hermos or Kyme. It is also represented by the rim of a fruit bowl and a fragment of Dotted Style pottery. The local Grey Ware appears in a wide variety of forms: drinking vessels, pithoi, strainers, amphoras, cooking ware, dinoi, lekanoid and krateroid vessels. Several of these shapes and their variants occur at Antissa, Methymna and Pyrrha, while some of them, and their incised linear deco-ration, trace their roots back to the Bronze Age. However, despite the general uniformity of the series, the differences in detail show that the cities of Lesbos followed their own separate paths. Finally, the unpainted cooking pots are also particularly interesting because they were found, together with a tripod Grey Ware cooking pot, in a place that might have been the kitchen hearth of the building complex. Located on the southwest coast of the island, Eresos was ideally placed to receive goods from mainland Greece and Asia Minor. Ships carrying Attic and Corinthian pottery seem to have touched at its port on their way to the Straits, while those carrying merchandise from Aeolis, the cities of the Erythraia Peninsula in Northern Ionia and Chios found their way to the market in Eresos en route to Northern Greece. There is, by contrast, very little evidence of a maritime trade route to the islands or the Asia Minor coast south of Chios.
