Gamma Zeta Chapter – St. John Fisher University, NY

This month our brother of the month was brother Stephanie Pilat. Steph wasnominated for this award for a similar role in November, though she won theevent this month due to her efforts in forging a last relationship with a localchurch in a blood pressure clinic. This year, Steph spearheaded an expandedrole to create a blood pressure clinic that was more than once yearly. Not onlydid she schedule several dates throughout the year, she also trained some ofour new brothers on the nuances of the event, to ensure it continues to runsmoothly after she moves on from her current position of Fundraising chair.Steph is really making this fraternity bigger and better and I hope she onlycontinues to put the work in that she has thus far. Great job Steph!

Brothers of the MonthGamma Pi Chapter – D’Youville University, NY

Our February brother of the month is Jesse LeFrancois(left). Jesse served as our chapter’s Worth Inner Guardlast year and saw areas that needed improvement whenit came to our initiation ceremony. This year was the firstrun with an initiation committee headed by Jesse herself. The initiation of our new P1 brothers went so smoothlythis year and it can all be attributed to our new initiationcommittee. From ensuring there was food for allattendees, to setting up the initiation stations, ourinitiation ceremony was a huge success. Jesse is alwayspresent at all PDC events and serves as a wise P3 brotherwith a lot of incite for our current Worthy Master at Armsand Worthy Inner Guard. She has made herself someoneto turn to in all proceedings regarding welcoming ournew brothers.

Gamma Phi Chapter – University of Findlay, OH

Erica Hagen is Gamma Phi’s brother of the month forMarch. Erica has helped to keep our chapter involved in theCommunity Dinner at a local church each month. This is anevent that Gamma Phi has been volunteering at for quitesome time, and we are thankful that Erica has helped tokeep it going. Erica also created the Rainbow Group for ourchapter. Each meeting a brother is randomly drawn andreceives a bag that is a color of the rainbow. The bag is fullof treats that are also that color, and it is a really easy wayto brighten someone’s day. Erica is also always there tolisten and help her fellow brothers. We are thankful for allthat she does for our chapter, and we are happy to haveher as our brother of the month for March!

Beta Gamma Chapter – Duquesne University, PA

Phi Delta Chi has served as the backbone to the entirety of my scholastic, professional and social career during my time at Duquesne University. Not onlydid I join an organization that is driven to be a leader in the world of pharmacy, Ialso made my absolute best friends through Phi Delta Chi. The bond sharedbetween the brothers of the Beta Gamma chapter is unlike any other I have seenin any other organization. We study together and live together. We will gettogether for a brotherhood event on a Friday night that will end in the earlyhours of the morning and we will get up Saturday morning to attend a serviceevent. We celebrate with each other in the good times and support each otherthrough the tough times. The best part about Phi Delta Chi is that once a brother,we are brothers for life. Although my collegiate chapter is coming to a close, I amexcited for what the alumni chapter has in store.

My goal in my career has always been the same since the beginning: deliver thehighest quality patient care to those I serve so that they may see the greatestpossible outcomes. I have kept service as a high priority in my life regardless ofwhere I take my career. I understand that my primary responsibility, as apharmacist, is to serve my patients. In a few months, I will begin my PGY-1residency year at The Centers for Family and Children in Cleveland, OH and Icould not be more excited to do so! I pursued a residency so that I may furthercultivate my clinical skills beyond my education at Duquesne. This residency willalso serve as a platform for me to develop skills I need to succeed as anambulatory care pharmacist.

After going through the residency search, application and match process fromstart to finish, I definitely have a few pearls of advice for those looking to pursuea residency position after graduation. First, think of why you would want to do aresidency in the first place. This is a question that you will be asked during allphases of the process and having an authentic answer to this is an absolute must.Secondly, ask questions and talk to anyone and everyone involved. Talk toprofessors, talk to current residents and ask questions! You are potentiallydevoting a year (or two) to a residency program and this is no small task, nomatter where you match. In addition to this, make it a priority to get facetimewith the programs at the top of your list. There are thousands of candidates andmany programs receive hundreds of applications. If they can put a face to aname, many programs are more comfortable with offering interviews to peoplethey already know. This goes beyond just talking with programs at residencyshowcases: do a rotation, shadow for a day, talk with a current resident, anythingthat will help you stand apart from other candidates.

Merry March from Beta Gamma Three Brothers of the Beta Gamma Chapterpresented a Katy’s Kids presentation to aneighboring elementary school class. Thispresentation highlighted the importance ofmedication adherence, medication safety, andwhat a pharmacist does. On the right is BrotherScott Zuefle reading a children’s book thatdiscusses the many roles of a pharmacist andteaches the basic components of a pharmacy.

The Brothers that presented the information and conductedthe activities for these students are (from left to right) ScottZuefle, Sa’ed Al-Olimat, and Justin Baselice. The activities thatwere being done included counting ‘pills’ with a counting trayand spatula, grinding up Smarties with a mortar and pestle, and showing children how to use a stethoscope.

This was a great experience for the Beta Gamma brothers and it is appreciated that theytook their time out of their schedules to provide educational support within their localcommunities.
