Birds of paradise basking amidst protea,anthuriums and orchids in the glow of a Hawaiian twilight. The lazy innocence of pansies against the backdrop of a wilderness safari.

These are just a sma ering of images. Moments in me. Flights of fancy. These are Anuschka stories that are born in the imagina ons of our ar s c visionaries. And me culously translated into exquisite hand-painted collec bles by our skilled ar sans. So that you can own a prized piece of handcra ed storytelling.

Some may call it an accessory. A tote. A wallet. A lug-it-everywhere satchel.

But you’ll always know it’s so much more.

The StorytellersLike all good stories, the tale of Anuschka starts once-upon-a- me, with just an idea. A vision. A dream cherished by founders Swapan and Roma Basu. A yearning to fuse art and func on. A determina on to use art, design and enterprise to empower and upli cra smen.

Since the late 80s, Swapan Basu and his wife Roma have been designing hand-painted Anuschka crea ons, con nuously evolving the art and produc on process, while always preserving the integrity of the brand. The unique handcra -ed luxury that is the we and warp of each Anuschka product. For over 25 years, Anuschka has remained the only family owned, designed, manufactured and distributed one-of-a-kind hand painted collec on at select bou ques across the world.

At the outset, Roma started designing hand painted bags while evolving the pro-duc on process and refi ning the pain ng methodology. Today, it remains a closely guarded family tradi on. An Anuschka crea on isn’t born in a faceless factory churning out thousands of iden cal monotone bags every day. The makers con n-ue to work as a family. Even today, Roma and Swapan are in the workshop every day, overseeing the produc on and ensuring that every Anuschka that leaves the workshop furthers the integrity of the brand.

Carrying it ForwardSwapan and Roma’s son, Bhaskar Basu, joined the family business over a decade ago and con nues to bring the same passion and commitment to the family tradi on. Having spent many summers working with his parents, he grew up watching his mother design and train ar sans and his father select the leathers and coordinate produc on. Armed with a degree in Business Administra on from Boston University, Bhaskar was instrumental in taking the brand interna onal and founding The Basu Group Inc, USA in 2000.

Since then, catalyzed by Bhaskar’s keen understanding of local andinterna onal fashion trends, the brand has taken giant strides in growing its inter-na onal footprint. Today, Anuschka crea ons are being individually hand painted by over a hundred highly skilled ar sans working under Roma and Bhaskar’s guid-ance. These unique crea ons can be found in bou ques and luxury retail outposts in over two dozen countries.

Luxury with a ConscienceEven in the throes of rapid global expansion, Anuschka has remained true to its core values and is dedicated to employing cra smen and ar sans who would otherwise grapple with unemployment and economic hardship. From the days of Anuschka’s infancy, the Basu family was determined to fi nd the most skilled ar sans to paint their designs on the handbags. They recognized the improba-bility of fi nding a professional ar st who’d be willing to spend hours in a factory pain ng the same design over and over again. In search of talented ar sans to

paint handbags by hand, individually and in large quan es to meet market demand, Roma Basu saw the need to do things diff erently.

So, she took a leap of faith.

Roma hired unemployed and economically challenged young adults, armed with a basic sense of art and a keen eagerness to learn the trade. Roma personally taught them the intricacies of pain ng on leather in the family’s workshop. Over the years, by becoming a part of the Anuschka family, these skills empowered them to earn an honest living and provide for their families.

Changing Lives: Kaushik’s StoryKaushik was 22 when he started working at the Anuschka workshop in the early 90s. Kaushik lived in a nondescript village on the fringes of the bustling metropolis that housed Anuschka’s workshop. He made a living as a day labor-er, fi nding odd jobs and frequently working in construc on or on the ny fami-ly farm. He made very li le money despite clocking in long hours of staggering labor. His village didn’t have electricity. The en re village shared one television that they would operate on a huge ba ery. Every four weeks they would take the ba ery to a nearby town for recharging.

Yearning for a be er life, Kaushik came to Kolkata. His brother-in-law told him about Anuschka, as his friend used to work there. Kaushik enjoyed drawing as a young boy but hadn’t received any formal training. When he joined the Anuschka team, he learned the basic techniques on the job. He was taught the tools of the trade. How to wield a paint brush. How to navigate the intricacies of pain ng on leather. How to harness his skills and create one-of-a-kind art. Within a couple of years, Kaushik had mastered the process of pain ng onleather. At the same me, his income had grown incrementally. He helped his family and his village dra a pe on to the local government and was instru-mental in bringing electricity to his village. In subsequent years, as Kaushik got married, he provided for his wife and his new home in the city while also taking care of his extended family in the village. Later, he brought his younger brother to join the Anuschka team as an appren ce. When his father suff ered a stroke, he could aff ord adequate medical a en on, no longer at the mercy of the government healthcare system.

Today, Kaushik is paying it forward. He is growing his family farming business in the village by engaging local youth, while boos ng his family income through his earnings from Anuschka. He also mentors the new recruits into Anuschka’s workshop, teaching them the art that transformed his life. Beyond the mone-tary security, Kaushik is intellectually s mulated through his cra .

No longer on the fringes, Kaushik is now a worthy aspirant of India’s new urban middle class.

Enriching the Community through Fair TradeThe success of The Basu group and its tremendous contribu on to its ac ve community can be exemplifi ed by such ar sans like Kaushik who are s ll working with the company and growing the cycle of sustainability by recrui ng others who are facing the same income challenges. A hands-on crea ve head, Roma is s ll in the workshop every day interac ng with the senior ar sans as well as their appren ces and coaching them to hone their skills. The Basu Group’s fair trade policies ensure that their ar sans are paid higher rates than similar skilled workers in other industries. They support the ar sans’ eff orts with health insurance for their families and re rement benefi ts ts, enabling them to aff ord the basics that are taken for granted - electricity in their homes, the ability to send their kids to school and to plan for their re rement. All this goes a long way in boos ng their morale, providing a support system and inspiring them to work be er. Thanks to Roma’s vision, a business challenge has evolved into a unique community engagement. The family’s passion and commitment is refl ected in every accessory created in the workshop by their team. And with each accessory that they create, they simultaneously reinvent lives.
