Sustainable Growth in BunkeringAs signs emerge that global economies may be

starting to enter a positive growth scenario, stronger trends in the transport sector are beginning to appear. Transport is dependent on two essential factors of the global economy: infrastructure development and consumer goods. Shipping is responsible for carry-ing raw materials for infrastructure such as iron ore, timber, and cement as well as consumer items such

as automobiles, textiles, appliances, and electronics. Shipping is the most cost effective and efficient means to supply these goods to the markets where they are needed and a strong, reliable, and responsive network to supply ships with bunkers is at the heart of that transport system.

This is where Aegean is taking its place: as a leader in supplying the global shipping industry with bunkers. The fact that Aegean was selected to be the bunker supplier at the new port of Tangiers, at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, demonstrates the capabilities of Aegean in competing and winning at the global level, in being able to respond to one of the most challenging mar-kets in the world, and doing so within a framework of responsible and sustain-able growth.

The parallel growth of Aegean Marine Lubricants demonstrates the “smart synergies” within the Aegean growth strategy. A proven track record of su-perior service at the most competitive price lays the groundwork for a global brand that is viewed with admiration, respect, and high expectation. Aegean has worked hard to win the respect of its customers and is ready to deliver, 24/7, on its commitments to service, quality, and price.

As the world economy and shipping steam forward, albeit with some tenta-tive steps at the moment, Aegean is ready to be a partner in development, a partner in sustainable growth.

A Healthy Diet During Pregnancy Can Help Prevent Birth Defects And Clefts. Diet is an important part of pregnancy. Eat a healthy diet that contains lots of fruits and vegetables and foods fortified with folic acid. According to the U.S. Government, women who plan to have a child should be sure to take sufficient levels of folic acid (400 micrograms per day) during pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects and reduce the risk forcleft lip and palate. When folic acid is taken one month before conception and throughout the first trimester, it has been proven to reduce the risk for neural tube defects by 50 to 70 per cent. Be sure to receive proper pre-natal care, quit smoking, and follow your health care provider’s guidelines for foods to avoid during pregnancy. Foods to avoid may include raw or undercooked seafood, beef, pork or poultry; delicatessen meats; fish thatcontain high levels of mercury; smoked seafood; fish exposed to industrial pollutants; raw shellfish or eggs; soft cheeses; unpasteurized milk; pâté; caffeine; alcohol; and unwashed vegetables. Course of Success for Aegean in Vancouver

A little over a year has passed since June 2008 when Aegean Marine Petroleum announced the acquisition of ICS Petroleum in Vancouver and the initiative has been crowned with full success. Having established its presence in the port of Vancouver and being the first choice of companies as it fully meets custom-ers’ needs regarding the high quality of products, timely delivery and excellent service, Aegean Marine Petroleum in Vancouver proves once again that it can meet the challenges of the times. Since the beginning of 2009 sales of fuels have steadily remained at high levels, maintaining the company’s strong presence in the difficult bunkering market. From May to October 2009, Aegean Marine Petroleum was chosen by the Roy-al Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL)—one if the largest cruise lines globally—for the refueling of its ships in the port of Vancouver. This confirms once again the quality of products and services the Aegean Group offers. In August Aegean’s new barge, a double hull, 2,300 metric-ton vessel named PT22, began operations in Vancouver, complementing the activities of the other two barges stationed there. The photos show the PT 25 barge tying up to RCCL’s “Serenade of the Seas” cruise ship in the port of Vancouver.

Pontos TV-Radio on the Internet Soon, the first Pontian web TV and Radio

channel will be available to Pontians

at every corner of the earth. Pontians

originated in the Black Sea area.

According to Mr. Savvas Kalenderidis,

a close associate of Mr. Dimitris

Melissanidis, and coordinator of this

effort, “there are more than 3.5 million

Pontians in Greece and there is no such

media to contribute actively to the pres-

ervation of the historical memory and

language of the Pontians. The Greeks of

Pontos and the East will have their own

media to express themselves.”

With this new initiative Mr. Melissanidis

continues the work of his father, Zoras

Melissanidis, who passed away six years

ago. During many decades of his life

he connected his name with the efforts

of continuing the Pontian culture in all

the earth’s corners and was worthily

declared one of its great benefactors.

Pontian Dance Festival

Eighteen hundred boys and girls, members of the dancing sections of 370 Pontian unions from all over Greece, dressed up in traditional costumes and, accompanied by traditional musical instruments, entered the “Alexandrian Melathron” in Thessaloniki on September 19, inaugurating the 5th Panhellenic Pontian Dance Festival, an institution that year after year becomes established as one of the most lively cultural events in the country. Before the dancing got underway, a visual presentation took place in honor of the “Patriarch” of the Pontian lyre, Gogo Petrides, to whom the Festival was dedicated. Then followed the entrance of 100 dancers and actors, members of the five Pontian unions of the Prefecture of Kozani, who reenacted the popular ancient tradition of ‘Mo-mogeroi,” an impressive part of the Festival. The Pontian unions presented dances from the areas of Argyroupolis, Pafras, Trapezounta, Kerasounta-Nikopolis, and Kars Kaukasou.Dozens of professional and amateur Pontian musicians, instrumentalists, and actors participated in the Festival, covering the whole specter of the musical tra-dition of Efxinos Pontos (Black Sea), while representatives of the political world and other distinguished personalities honored the event with their presence. Honorary guest of the Festival was the founder of Aegean, Mr. Dimitris Melis-sanidis, of Pontian origin himself.

New Submarine to Detect MinesA new unmanned autonomous submarine has been developed to detect explosive mines hid-den in shallow coastal waters, such as ports and harbors.BAE Systems introduced the 50-kg vessel called Talisman L, which uses high-definition sonar and multi-view cam-eras. The mini-sub can zoom through water at a top speed of more than five knots and maintain the manoeuvrability to turn within its own length.

The vessel can operate at depths of 100 meters for up to 12 hours, but Andy Tonge, head of the underwater unmanned vehicles activity at BAE Systems, said the Talisman L’s real strong point is its capabilities in shallow water. ‘Shallow water presents a lot of very difficult challenges,’ he added. ‘While most people will ask how deep a system will operate at, we’re trying to go the other way and work out just how shallow we can make our systems work. We’re able to operate in the odd one or two metres of water.’Mr. Tonge said those depths are found in ports or harbors near civilian areas that could be prime terrorist targets. The Talisman L can operate autonomously, using pre-set mission parameters, but operators can assume manual control. If the Talisman L detects a mine, it will pass the information on to officials who then make the decision on how to deal with the threat.

DNV Certificate for Exhaust Gas Cleaning SystemDNV—one of the world’s leading

classification societies—has issued

a compliance certificate for the first

ship fitted with an exhaust gas clean-

ing system capable of meeting the

requirements of SOx Emission Control

Areas. The certification demonstrates

that ship operators may in the future

have the option of using traditional

fuel oils, rather than low-sulphur

fuels, when voyaging in designated

sensitive areas such as the North Sea.

The pilot SOx scrubbing system was

fitted to the exhaust pipe of an auxil-

iary engine on the product tanker, MT

Suula, owned by Neste Oil Shipping

of Finland. DNV approved the system

on behalf of the Finnish Maritime

Administration after overseeing the

installation and successful operation

of the new technology. The two-year

project was a collaboration between

Wärtsilä, Neste Oil Shipping, DNV,

Aker Yard and Metso Power.

“Despite its environmental advan-

tages, low sulphur fuel is not always

readily available and can cost more

than other fuel oils, so the technologi-

cal advances made on the Suula are

a welcome addition to the anti-pollu-

tion toolbox available to the shipping

industry,” said DNV project leader,

Angelo Tossio.

Need for New Investments in OilMore than half of all oil produced by

2020 will need to come from new

investments and companies’ capital

expenditure must rise, a new report

said on Monday. Management consul-

tant Booz & Company urged global oil

companies to embark on an aggressive

spending spree by acquiring smaller

players which are now priced at more

attractive levels due to the economic

downturn. International and national

oil companies (IOCS and NOCs) are also

flush with cash, the report said, after

years of high oil prices.

The five largest oil firms - Exxon,

Chevron, Shell, BP and Total - increased

their year-end cash levels and cash

equivalents by nearly 24 % on aver-

age between 2006 and 2007, and

by another 15 % between the end of

2007 and the last quarter of 2008, to

nearly $80 billion in total.

“Following years of high oil prices,

many IOCs and NOCs have amassed

piles of cash, and are in an excellent

position to take the long-term view.

NOCs controlling reserves of cheap oil

but lacking the technology and capabili-

ties to further their investment efforts

should consider acquiring independents

and weakened oil service providers,”

the report said.

Global oil demand is expected to rise

from current levels of 85m barrels a

day (bpd) to 100m bpd by 2020. To

meet this demand more than half of

total production by 2020 will need to

come from new investments, the report

forecast. It predicted the average price

for oil over the next 10 to 15 years

would be around $60 to $80 a barrel.

95th Birthday for Panama Canal The Panama Canal celebrated 95 years of service on Saturday August 15. Since the steamship ‘Ancón’s’ inaugural canal passage August 15, 1914, the waterway has offered its services to more than 983,000 transits. The canal is estimated to reach one million transits next year.“Over the past 95 years, the canal has been a part of the evolution of trans-portation as a vehicle for bringing

together nations around the world,” said Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta.

Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. announced at the end of August that it has

commenced operations in Tangiers, Morocco. The new port of Tangiers is an important gateway that serves the vast Mediterranean and North African regions and is well positioned for strong growth. Including Tangiers, Aegean has a presence in 14 strategic markets worldwide, representing an increase of 180% since going public in December 2006.

MoroccoMorocco is located in Northern Afri-ca bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the West. It is officially known as the Kingdom of Morocco; it covers 446,550 sq kilometres and has an estimated population of 33,000,000. (2006).

Morocco has always been a cross-roads between Africa, Europe and the Middle East and it evokes this sense even more in Tangiers, where Morocco's government has planned building a major port in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The ProjectOne of the largest container termi-nals in the Mediterranean, Tanger Med is able to host the largest next generation of container vessels. The

project was instigated by the new King, Mohamed VI, who sees the re-gion and its strategic location as cen-tral to the country and as a gateway to Mediterranean development. This project aims at the construction of four deep water container terminals, offering a capacity of 8, 5 million TEU in two ports.

It is managed by the Tanger-Med Special Agency (TMSA) a state-con-trolled agency endowed with public prerogatives, solely dedicated to the implementation of the project and a strategic priority for the economic and social development of the North of Morocco.

It will also win part of the strong growth market of container tranship-ment and become the leading hub for cereal transhipment, a facility which is non-existent in the north-west Afri-can region at present.

The concept is to use the port’s location to attract shipping traffic that flows between east and west, pass-ing through the Strait of Gibraltar. By leveraging the port, the hope is to turn the region into a transit and logistics hub; a zone also designed to attract international manufactur-ers to build and export, where goods moving between Asia, Europe and the U.S. can be packed or assembled.TMSA licensed national and interna-tional consortiums such as Comanav,

the national line, with their partners Eurogate, MSC and CMA CGM etc. TMSA can already claim one high-profile success. Renault announced a €600m (£449m, $880m) project to build a factory in Tanger Med’s indus-trial zone with the capacity to produce 200,000 cars a year from 2010, and eventually up to 400,000 a year.

The PortThe port itself will consist of eight terminals: four container terminals, a petroleum terminal, a Ro-Ro termi-nal, a Bulk terminal, and a passenger terminal. The first container terminal (TC1), operated by a Consortium of Danish company AP Moeller Maersk and Morocco’s Akwa Group has an 800-meter quay, a land platform of 46 ha and a capacity of 1.5 million containers. The second container terminal (TC2) operated by Eurogate-Contship and MSC and CGA-CGM, respectively the world’s second and third largest container shipping com-panies, has an 812-meter quay, a land platform of 40 ha and a capacity of 1.5 million containers.

Tanger Med II, the new extension project, was officially launched on June 17, 2009. The construction works for Tanger Med II will be carried out in two phases: the first phase involves the completion of one of the terminal (terminal 4), equivalent to nearly half the total extension capacity (2.2 mil-lions TEUs) and quay length (1,200 meters). Construction of Terminal 3,with a 3 million TEU capacity and a 1,600 meters quay length, will be launched according to capacity de-mand from global operators in the region. The concession agreement of Terminal 4 was awarded to Morocco’s port operator Marsa Maroc, which will achieve an expected 320 million Euros worth of investments in super-srtuctures and equipment.

Port Layout The aim is that Tanger Med and the port's container activities will be com-plemented by a series of free zones to be deployed over 5 000 hectares, which will develop the country's import and export capacity. Tanger Med Port ac-tivities started on July 27, 2007 with the opening of Tanger Med Port 1 first container terminal. As far as port infrastructure is concerned, it is built according to the joint use of the rubble-mound breakwater and reinforced concrete caissons breakwa-ter techniques. This strengthens the port protection from rough seas and allows an optimal use of the basin’s surface while providing the vessels with the possibility to berth alongside the jetty.

The primary features of the port are:❚ A primary and secondary breakwater❚ A 300 m wide access channel, dredged

to 17.00m ❚ A 600m diameter turning circle

dredged to 16.00m ❚ A harbor basin of 100 Ha. ❚ Two oil jetties for 60kt DWT and

120kt DWT max dredged to 17.00m

Oil Storage FacilitiesHorizon Tangiers Terminal SA (HTT-SA) a consortium of Horizon Termi-nals Limited, an ENOC subsidiary, Kuwait-based Independent Petroleum Group (IPG) and Morocco’s Afriquia SMDC, were awarded, by TMSA in 2006, the concession to build and op-erate an oil storage facility.

With its strategic location at the en-trance to the Mediterranean and ex-cellent connections to Europe, Tanger Med port is set to emerge as a major transhipment and refuelling hub in the global movement of ships.

Currently, the building of three oil storage facilities is underway, one of which, of 218,000m3, will be used exclusively for bunkering activities. These facilities have been designed in accordance with European and American standards, except where Moroccan standards prevail.

Aegean Marine PetroleumAegean Marine Petroleum has been selected to be the Bunker supplier and will have access to the above storage capacity which is linked to the oil jetties

by pipeline, enabling it to import up to 600 cts of fuel oil with blending facilities designated for bunkering purposes.

Aegean Marine Petroleum is very well positioned to commercialize bun-kers in this new harbor and offshore. Aegean Marine Petroleum will have the possibility of supplying as ‘a sole supplier’ within the port perimeter and supplying offshore the Northern part of Morocco. The forecast is that 7,000 vessels per annum will be calling at the Tanger Med 1 harbor and a further 10,000 ships calling at Tanger Med 2 in the near future. Our dedicated barges will also supply the passing vessels from the anchorage areas situ-ated nearby the new port. The product delivered will meet all ISO 8217:2005 Standards and we will concentrate mostly on LSFO, with a max content of 1.5% Sulfur and turn Tanger Med into a LSFO platform for ships going North within the SECA area.

Aegean will also be able to provide, by bulk and drums, the supply of its own lubricant brand ‘Alfa’ within the area, optimizing the global demand of any ship transiting through the area.

 AEGEAN NEWS ΑUTUMN 2009

What are the most important features of the Port Tanger Med?

Tanger Med is a deepwater port designed to receive the lat-est generation vessels. Having started its first container ter-minal back in July 2007,Tanger Med is set to become one of the leading ports in the Mediterranean and Atlantic region with an extended capacity of over 8 million TEUs. Owing to its geographic position on the south bank of Gibraltar Strait, it can draw North/South and East/West maritime traffic, while enabling vessels to make detor-free calls.

The port of Tanger Med is quite special, in the sense that it was initially designed as an integrated project, under which both port and industrial platforms are developed. In addition, national planning and development concerns were particu-larly taken into account, by implementing efficient railroad and highway connections of the port to the hinterland.

Please tell us about the management of the Port.

To ensure the implementation, development and management of Tanger Med industrial and port platforms, the Moroccan State established the Tanger Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) in 2003. For such purpose, it has had public jurisdic-tions, among which is the Port Authority at Tanger Med.

The main goal was to ensure the management of a major public project using private companies’ procedures. As the sole contact of all port community members and investors in the port activity areas, TMSA is a limited company with public funds, managed as a private corporation. It has ex-ecutive and supervisory boards including major ministers and concerned public bodies.

What implications does the Port have for Morocco in general?

The main mission of Tanger Med is to firm up the territo-ry’s competitiveness. Indeed, Tanger Med is a transship-ment infrastructure aimed at optimizing global and re-gional container traffic. However, it is also a platform made

available to Moroccan industrial logistics. Thanks to the launch of the national highway network last year servicing the port of Tanger Med, the start of the railroad container terminal last June, the launch of Tanger Med’s Ro- Ro port in 2010, the transshipment port will soon become a gateway port with a significant import/export activity. At a reduced intercontinental freight rate, the port of Tanger Med will provide a considerable benefit to its hinterland industries under worldwide competition.

Moreover, by the period 2015-2020, 150,000 job op-portunities will be created within the Tanger Med major industrial platform, by gradually developing 5,000 hectares of activity areas.

How will the Port support the economic development of Mo-

rocco and the Tangiers area?

To answer that question, I will give you quite an explanato-ry example of the potential benefits of such a large project on the Moroccan economy. Renault, the French manufac-turer, has so far represented the most substantial private investment of the Tanger Med industrial platform and one of the major industrial ventures nationwide.

Mainly export-oriented, this plant will be commissioned by late 2010 with a capacity of 200,000 cars a year to be in-creased to 400,000 cars a few years later. It will create 36,000 direct and indirect industrial jobs, helping strengthen the already-existing automotive industrial base at Tangier.

An industrial complex of such magnitude was made possible thanks to the effective port and logistic infra-structures, which will enable the manufacturer to export its vehicles to their destination markets within the shortest time limits.

Please tell us about the human capital of the Port and how it

will promote social development.

Developing the port complex of Tanger Med fits in a sus-tainable development action, while constantly seeking to balance the economic, environmental and social sides.

In order to support our social commitment, we set up in May 2007 the Tanger Med Foundation for human develop-ment. Its actions mainly focus on Education, Training and Health. Its budget represents 1% of TMSA’s total investment in the port complex, i.e. €10 million over the period 2007-2011.

Socially, the foundation’s goal is to strengthen the ter-ritorial dynamics represented in the achievement of the port of Tanger Med. This is in cooperation with local col-lectivities, governmental institutions and civil society asso-ciations, with the ultimate purpose to have complementary and mutual means.

The environment is a key issue in new projects today. How are

you developing the Port to respond to environmental concerns

and sustainable development?

Several various measures have been taken. Upstream, land use planning tools helped set a balanced deployment of the coastal port platform: the port is 7km long extending over less than 10% of the strait length.

To safeguard the coast, road and railroad networks con-necting the port to its hinterland have been executed by keeping away from it to reduce the impact on fragile areas.

In other regards, as of 2006, TMSA anticipated the legal responsibility by carrying out an impact assessment of the Tanger Med integrated project, in accordance with state-of-the-art standards, having in due course produced an environmental management plan.

Last, the environmental impact study of the port of Tanger Med 2 achieved in 2008 by TMSA will generate an environmental management system to be implemented throughout the works performance, for the purposes of environmental impact studies.

How do you view the presence of Aegean in Tanger Med? What

are the benefits and synergies that your partnership with Ae-

gean offers?

Such presence will definitely contribute to Tanger Med’s willpower and commitment to provide its clients and part-ners with premium services, while consolidating the port platform competitiveness.

In the competition, which was or-ganized by the Marine Environ-ment Protection Authority of the

government of Sri Lanka, participated four international joint ventures, while HEC, as the leading company, participated together with the Greek company Antipollution S.A. and the local company McLarens S.A.

Following the evaluation of the ten-ders of participating companies, HEC S.A. proved to be the only company fulfilling the terms of the invitation to tender and succeeded in passing on to the second stage of the competition.

In the framework of further evalu-ating the submitted tender for the management of liquid and solid waste produced by ships arriving in Sri Lanka, a seven-member state ministe-rial committee visited, from 9 to 13 of June, HEC’s installations in Piraeus to investigate its technical capabilities.

Following a thorough examina-

tion, the findings of the committee was positive, and HEC was invited to Colombo, on August 25, for negotia-tions with a three-member committee made up of the General Secretaries from the Ministries of Finance, Envi-ronment, and Mercantile Marine.

Following the completion of the negotiations, the next phase was set for November 10, in Colombo.

Given the Sri Lankan government’s desire to modernize and develop its port installations after the end of a 30-year civil war, the provision of in-tegrated reception facility services for liquid and solid ship waste is a necessi-ty, and at the same time, an obligation so that the marine environment may be protected. Clean seas will help Sri Lanka become a unique tourist desti-nation in the wider region of Southern Asia, and this is the goal set by the country’s Tourism Organization.

HEC provides reception facilities

to ships sailing in the Greek Seas and the result is that they are cleaner than they were 15 years ago. This is a sig-nificant distinction for HEC and an undeniable letter of recommendation which, combined with its organized structure and reliability, contrib-uted to its success in the international competition in Sri Lanka.

Consequently, HEC is no longer just the biggest company nationwide in the sector of environmental protec-tion, but has become an important presence in the global industry for the protection of the environment and, specifically, the marine environment.

HEC aims to respond to the choice of Sri Lanka’s ministerial committee and its selection as the only company meeting all required prerequisites, with responsibility and consistency, qualities that have up to now given it special recognition in the conscience of users and responsible bodies.

Today they own gas stations at the 12th kilometer of the Lamia-Domokos Regional National

Road, at the 222nd kilometer of the Ath-ens-Thessaloniki New National Road and at 100 Ipsilandou Street, in Lamia. They also own three tank trucks.

Mr. Panayiotis Tzounis is the broth-er we talked with and he belongs to that category of Aegean’s gas station owners who have acquired their knowledge from experience, comple-mented, however, from the knowledge derived from university studies. After his graduation from the Industrial University of Piraeus (the name has since changed) he returned home to work at the family business. His words are serious, focused, and to the point.

In all these years of being in this particular line of work you must have worked with other companies before joining the Aegean family. What was the reason for your deci-sion to change your previous cooperation?

Unfortunately, there were very seri-ous reasons. The trust in our previous partner was seriously shaken and this was caused from problems caused by a particular group of people. The situ-ation became so bad that we ended up trying to find justification in court where we finally won the case. It was a very difficult period for us.

And how did you decide to work with Ae-gean, especially after such an adventure? What really played the leading role here was the human factor. I already knew Mr. Nikos Peramatzis, a man whom I respected and trusted and I still do. He made me a presentation of Aegean and this is how this cooperation started in the beginning of 2005. The first gas station to put up the Aegean logo and colors was Kotsilitis station in Othonos street in Lamia, which was leased by us.

Were there any negative reactions from your customers when they saw a totally

new look and a new name in your gas stations? There was no problem, nothing nega-tive. The consumers are interested in the price, always in combination with the quality of the product. Further-more, the look of a gas station sends a message, talks directly to the cus-tomer. Our gas stations send a strong, clear, positive message to the public.

Are you facing any problems in this coop-eration and how are they dealt with?If and when we have a problem I talk to Mr. Peramatzis, even today, and we immediately solve it. I must tell you at this point that I have the duties of inspector for Aegean in this area.

After all these years you have surely formed a clear image in your head regard-ing this cooperation. Would you call it a successful cooperation? To maintain cooperation there must be benefit to all involved. The gas sta-tion owner, the company and the con-sumer. Until today, with this coopera-tion, we have achieved this balance in full. When the result is 50 plus 1 posi-tive, then one must be pleased. And we are very pleased!

20 AEGEAN NEWS ΑUTUMN 2009

The oil products sector has wit-nessed historic landmarks dur-ing the long period that oil com-

panies have operated in Greece, which have left their imprint on the develop-ment of this market. For example, in 1992, after a long period when a market decree was in effect specifying the mar-gin of all players, and which resulted in operating losses for most of the oil trading companies in the decade of the 80s and in the departure of multination-als such as Fina, Εsso and Total from Greece, the market was liberalized.

The expectations of the sector then were that the companies would have the opportunity, in a free market, to specify their margins and become profitable.

The time was historic, competition began to exist, possibly for the first time, in the sector of oil products, and un-precedented conditions started to take shape for companies and gas stations owners. Under these conditions, the multinationals Mobil, in the beginning, and Texaco later, left the Greek market. The first merged with ΒΡ and the sec-ond was bought out by Shell. Also, the Greek-interest companies Mamidakis and Elda-E were respectively bought out by and merged into Hellenic Petro-leum, a state company, which also owns the national refineries.

In the decade since 2000, and in an intensely competitive environment, Aegean Oil was founded and began its operation. Aegean Oil: a wholly Greek

company, for which, in its first steps, most competitors saw no future. The bolder ones stated it would “burst.” A company established from ‘white paper,’ in extremely demanding conditions, regarding knowledge, experience, capi-tal, and reliability, and which, finally, against all forecasts, managed in a re-cord time to occupy third place in mar-ket sales, and invalidate all forecasts.

Today, in 2009, developments are dramatic. Two Greek companies of the sector, El-Petrol and Sunoil have suspended their operation and a third, Dracoil, has ceded part of its percent-age. The last two multinationals, BP and Shell, were bought out by Hellenic Petroleum and Motor Oil, respectively, and all this since the beginning of this year. Today, all the companies in the oil products sector are of Greek interests and the conditions being shaped create the circumstances for serious realign-ment. The time is once again historic and possibly unique, in the sense that the international giants of the sector are departing. ‘Players’ with a huge interna-tional experience and deep knowledge of their field, are exiting the “game” and the market remains in the hands of Greek companies.

Εκο, a Hellenic Petroleum subsid-iary, holds first place in the sector, after the buy out of Εlda-Ε, Mami-dakis and ΒΡ, which resulted from the buying out of Fina and the merger of Mobil—meaning Eko holds first place

after the buy out of five trading com-panies. Moτor Oil today holds second place, as the mother company of the two trading companies, Avin and Shell, with Shell including the percentage of Texaco following its acquisition.

Aegean is now in the third place in the market, and it is the only company of the three first companies whose mar-ket share is the result of one and only one company, and which has achieved this status in less than ten years. Aege-an, we must remember, has not resulted through an acquisition. In essence, Ae-gean began in 2000, securing a trading license, and gas station by gas station, instituted an unprecedented policy of growth and development in the sector’s history, Today Aegean can proudly boast that it is the ‘third pylon’ in the

oil products sector. The year 2009 still has a way to go. The companies of the sector are careful to place themselves in this market under the new conditions, having expectations to benefit from potential developments. What is cer-tain is that Aegean, which is the ‘defini-tion’ of development, and has proven this in recent years, has as its target to recruit approximately 150 gas stations, mainly from the companies that have been bought out or departed. Already, during recent weeks it has recruited 15 Shell gas stations, some in Athens, in Crete, in Livadia, in Nafpaktos, and is very optimistic. To date, Aegean’s re-sults have, in broad terms, met or ex-ceeded its targets, and consequently it is certain that it will be the company most favored by current developments.

To develop consumer products in the market, strategies for approaching consumers are

required. Such marketing tools, aim-ing at attracting the consumers, are promotional activities.

Within the framework of develop-ing the strategy for encouraging the use of lubricant products, Aegean proceeded in the presentation of the following promotional activities.

Promotion of Engine Lubricants VELOX - VIGOR The first promotional activity in the network of cooperating gas stations took place from July 17, 2009 until August 6, 2009 and was absolutely successful. The promotion concerned

the engine lubricant Velox for gasoline engines and Vigor for diesel engines, in one and four liters containers.

Every cooperating station, upon the placement of a specific order of the abovementioned products, re-ceived free SOL’s tee shirts and sun visors with the logos of Aegean and Velox lubricants.

This promotional activity aimed to reinforce the development of lubricant sales in the gas station network, and to strengthen the relationship of the end consumers with the Product-Company-Gas station owner, offering consumers the opportunity to have a double benefit when purchasing Aegean lubricants.

The result of this promotional activ-ity is that the consumer will use Aegean

Velox and Aegean Vigor engine lubri-cants and will discover the advantages they offer compared with products he or she used up to that point, and at the same time will acquire for free a useful product-accessory for his car or for himself/herself. Such actions are neces-sary because they boost the interest of the consumer as well as of the gas sta-tion owner regarding the use of quality lubricants with an additional benefit.

“Aegean will always be at the fore-front of such promotional activities to the gas station network, implement-ing at least two to three such activities every year” said Mr. Nikos Peramatzis, Manager of the Gas Station Network.

Seasonal Promotion of Anti-freeze ProductsIn view of the coming winter season, Aegean started its seasonal offers on antifreeze products from September 2009 until November 2009.

The policy followed in the supply of the antifreeze products discussed here, regards special price offers.

It is with great pleasure we announce

that Aegean has become the official

supplier to the Hellenic Navy. In the

framework of the approval procedures

of the Hellenic Navy’s suppliers, an ex-

ecutive team of the Fuel and Lubricants

Department of the Hellenic Navy, con-

sisting of chemical engineers, visited

the company’s installations in Aspro-

pyrgos and was briefed on the proce-

dure of lubricant production as well as

their packing and distribution.

Special interest was shown during the

team’s visit to the company’s chemistry

lab, where they ascertained the high

quality of the laboratory’s equipment

and the high level of expertise of the

company’s chemists. The team was also

briefed on the program of used lubri-

cants’ analysis, with which the status of

each lubricant is assessed after its use

and also the status of the engines where

this lubricant has been used.

Following the completion of all required

inspections, the relevant tender was

awarded to Aegean and in August 2009

the first order of Aegean lubricants to

the Hellenic Navy was executed.

The required permissions were granted by the:❚ Local Port authority “The Port of North Cape”❚ Norwegian Coastal Administration, “Kystverket Troms of Finnmark”❚ Norwegian Pollution Control Authority, “SFT”

The success in obtaining these permissions is a result of the efforts and the continuous aim for improvement made by the different departments (opera-tions, technical and health & safety) within the Aegean group.

Apart from the present industries active in the area, Aegean is convinced that in the near future the economical activity in this part of the world will be boosted. This phenomenon will result in an increase of shipping business and consequent need of a first class, reliable bunker supplier.

Potential customers targeted by Aegean are:❚ Passenger vessels❚ Offshore industry❚ LNG & LPG tankers❚ Crude & Product tankers❚ Fishing Industry vessels

We sincerely believe that Aegean’s efforts, in creating this option, to supply bunkers in this part of the world, where no similar bunker facilities are present, will be appreciated and supported by Shipowners, Operators and Charterers ac-tive in this zone.

county, which extends to an area of 924 square kilometers and has a population of

4000. The rock of North Cape penetrates the Arctic Ocean for 310 meters. In 1553

the English explorer Richard Chancellor named it Nordkapp. In 1664 the Italian priest

Francesco Negri was the first traveller/visitor to the Cape and reached it on foot,

walking through the ice and snow covered region. The area is an attractive tourism

destination as 200,000 people from all over the globe come to enjoy “midnight sun.”

During the summer, from May 15 until July 31, the sun remains above the horizon and

there is light throughout the day.

Aegean’s facilities in Jamaica were, of course, ISPS certified under the previous ownership and management of Texaco. However, the ISPS certification is not transferable to the new owner. Independent of this,

and as per relevant regulations, all facilities must be re-certified by 2009 (5 years after the first implementation).

Therefore, the process has started for certification, part of which is the Table Top Exercise (TTX), which took place on August 20, 2009, at the new confer-ence room of Aegean’s premises. Taking part were participants from various government agencies and organizations as well as from the private sector, such as our neighbors Carib Cement.

USAIN BOLTJamaica’s Thunder

IAAF World Championships Every two years, the International Association of Athletics Federations stages a World Track & Field Championships which repre-sents essentially the same level of athletic competition as the Track & Field portion of the Olympic Games. The IAAF World Cham-pionships began in 1983, and were presented every 4 years, until 1991, when the frequency became every two years. The 12th presentation of these World Championships was held in Berlin, Germany this year, from August 15-23.

We are referring to the astounding new world re-cord in the 100meter race

of Bolt Usain and to the success of the women’s team—Simone Facey, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Aleen Bailey and Kerron Stewart—which won the 4 X100m sprint relay in 42.06 seconds.

The man who “run too fast,” Usain Bolt started running when he was only 10 years old, but initially his fa-vorite athletic activity—and that of his parents— was cricket. However, soon enough the running track won his heart. He became the youngest world champion in the 200-meter race when he was 16 and, since 2003, he began breaking one record after the other.

On May 31, 2008 in New York, he astonished the world with his 9.72-second 100-meter race, breaking Asafa Powel’s world record, and from that point he has been unstoppable.

At the Beijing Olympic Games he ran 100 meters in 9.69 seconds, 200 me-ters in 19.30 and the 4x100 in 37.10. One year later, at Berlin’s IAAF World Championships, he won the Gold Medal in the 100-meter final in 9.58 seconds, a race that created history.

Although he remains a simple, unpretentious person, in Jamaica Bolt is considered a legend. The Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding an-nounced that Bolt will be honored with the title of Knight, the fourth highest title in the country, while a new highway will be named after him.

Bolt came to Thessaloniki in the middle of September to participate in the IAAF Finals “WAF Thessaloniki 2009.” He made an impression with his friendly and simple manners and expressed his happiness “to be in Greece, the country where athletics were born.”

Bolt in Brief • The first Jamaican ever to win an

Olympic medal in the 100-meter race

• Started his athletic carrier playing cricket

• He loves dancing • He is going steady with Miziccan

Evans, the girl he met when he was 13 years old

• He likes soccer and is a Manchester United fan

• He is the tallest sprinter in the world at 1.93 m

The location was selected with great care to allow a “dialogue” between the exhibits of the

Museum and the buildings on the Acropolis. The architectural design was entrusted to the architect Bernard Tschumi following a competition where participants were judged by a committee of architects, engineers and archaeologists, chaired by Santiago Calatrava. “The form of the building arose as a response to the challenges of creating a structure that was worthy of housing the most dramatic sculptures of Greek antiquity, and doing so in an overwhelmingly historic and monu-mental setting,” explains Mr. Tschumi. “The site at the foot of the Acropolis confronted us with the Parthenon itself, one of the most influential buildings in Western civilization. At the same time, we had to consider the sensitive archaeological excavations, the presence of the contemporary city and its street grid, and the special challenges of the hot climate in Athens and an earthquake region.”

The collections at the New Museum consist mainly of sculptures, many of which originally adorned the monu-ments of the Acropolis, illuminated

by the famous natural light of Attica in all its transformations during the day. The extensive use of glass allows the light to enter all exhibition halls, ensuring similar exhibition condi-tions as the original space. Skylights, walls with shaded glass, and rectangu-lar openings also help the flow of light throughout the building.

The use of cement in the construc-tion of the building acts as a neutral background for the exhibited works of art. Circular openings in regular inter-vals help absorb sounds. The Museum is supported by 92 cement columns carefully placed at the excavation site of 2,500 sq. meters, creating the illu-sion that the building is suspended above the ancient settlement revealed during the preparatory excavations, which dates to 3000 B.C.

The building is divided into three levels, the base, the middle zone and the top. The base includes the main entrance and the reception area, to-gether with the temporary exhibition halls and glass openings, which allow visitors a view to the archaeological excavations.

A glass ramp leads to a double-height space in the middle section, which

houses the permanent collection halls from the Archaic to the late Roman period, and a mezzanine level with a public terrace and a restaurant with an excellent view of the Acropolis. The building culminates in the Parthenon Hall, a rectangular space surrounded by glass, with a slight inclination of 23 degrees from the rest of the structure to allow its alignment with the Parthenon.

The external glass walls of the hall allow visitors an unobstructed view of the Acropolis and of the city around it. The 160-meter Parthenon Frieze, with the Panathenaea procession, runs the perimeter of the hall, a bit further ahead and higher the metopes are exhibited in pairs, while the pedi-ments are displayed in the two sides of the hall. The whole sculpture decora-tion of the ancient temple, reunited for the first time, can be admired illu-minated under the natural Attica light just as it had been seen thousands of years ago when it was on the Parthe-non. The Frieze, with original sculp-tures complemented by the all white plaster reproductions, sends a silent, but overwhelming message to the world: the Parthenon Marbles must return home.

Of course, the new technol-ogy vehicles (electric, hybrid cars) have still a long way

to go before they become a common sight. The reasons are mainly tech-nological, developments have not reached the point where companies may manufacture cars that are practi-cal, without emissions, have limited gasoline consumption and low cost.

Electric carsElectric cars, though they seem the friendliest solution to the environment, present some serious disadvantages which make their use difficult and have restricted them to auxiliary roles with an experimental nature. Their greatest disadvantage is the batteries they use. In addition to their high cost, they have to be replaced after a few years, they are heavy and bulky. However, electric cars have zero emissions and their electric

engine can reach its maximum capacity from an almost zero base.

Hybrid CarsWhat is a hybrid car? It is a car with two engines, one petrol engine and one electric engine, which are being coordinated harmoniously through an onboard computer. The greatest tech-nological innovation in a hybrid car is that the battery empowering the elec-tric engine is being charged when the car is in motion, from the petrol engine and the friction of the wheels. Thus the hybrid car does not face the problems of the first electric cars. In other words, it has great autonomy, it is easy to re-fuel, it has speed and acceleration.

The great success of hybrid cars in America, Japan, and Europe has to do with the great reduction of gasoline consumption (up to 40%), resulting in a significant reduction of pollutants and

long-term financial benefit of the users.Hybrid cars combine the advantages

of electric and conventional cars, with petrol or diesel engines. They use an internal combustion engine together with a row of batteries (much smaller than the ones of electric cars). The battery is charged by the petrol engine and it does not require the car to be connected to the electric network, a process which is time consuming and with many problems, as experience from the use of purely electric cars shows. The main concept behind the operation of hybrid cars is the use of each motor system in the area where it has the best performance.

In reality, the hybrid car is the nec-essary intermediate step until the car which will move with hydrogen comes onto the scene. This, however, is a de-velopment that may require another decade.
