WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) The A-9377 employs proprietary Onkyotechnologies to ensure optimal audio performance.

Benefit 1: Uncommonly Low Negative-FeedbackDesign—Get cleaner sounds on program peaksAlthough negative feedback (NFB) is a cheap wayto reduce noise at lower frequencies, there is aprice to pay in terms of audio quality: NFB canseverely inhibit an amplifier’s ability both to respondto large signal gains (for example, in a fortissimopassage) and to produce sound at high frequencies. That’s why the A-9377 has a low-NFB design withaudiophile-grade, close-tolerance components atcritical points in the signal path. This design allows itto achieve a frequency response out to 100 kHz forhigh-resolution formats such as DVD-Audio andSuper Audio CD, as well as for regular CDs, DVDs,and other music sources.

Benefit 2: Closed Ground-Loop Circuits—Enjoygreater maximum volume without distortionIf an amplifier’s ground potential (voltage) fluctuatesduring playback, noise is likely to result. In an open-loop circuit design, where all circuits are connectedto the power supply via a single loop (as on manyamplifiers), the noise is compounded. To avoid this, the A-9377 employs a sophisticated closed-circuitdesign in which each circuit has a separate link tothe power supply—this helps to cancel individualcircuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.

Benefit 3: High Instantaneous-Current Capability—Experience audio with greater dynamicsWhen an amplifier outputs an audio signal, theconnected speakers accumulate energy, reflex, andsend energy back to the amplifier. The amplifier mustthen immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energyand instantaneously send out the next signal. Thesame high current required to achieve this is alsonecessary to handle speaker impedance fluctuations, which can force an amplifier to provide four to sixtimes its usual current load. The A-9377’sinstantaneous current capability ensures that audiooutput is not affected by power limitations.

Discrete Output Stage Circuitry toInhibit Audio Interference The current that drives loudspeakers is delivered bytransistors in the output stage circuitry. Althoughadding more transistors to the output stageincreases the output-current capability, these extratransistors put added strain on the power supplyand generate more heat. When the output stage isrequired to deliver more power than it is capableof, the top and bottom parts of the waveform areflattened or “clipped”. This clipping causes noticeabledistortion, even if it occurs only infrequently. The A-9377’s circuit design keeps the transistorsseparate at the output stage, which means thataudio signals are kept free of clipping. Also, with lessheat generated, the longevity of the output stagecircuitry is enhanced, ensuring that the componentstands the test of time.

Power Supply to Enhance Musicality andSupport LoudspeakersAt the heart of every Onkyo amplifier, you’ll find apower supply that can maintain or increase outputpower as impedance falls. Musically, this means thatyou have deep, powerful bass; wide-rangingdynamics; musical peaks that sound composed; andcorrect timbre and soundstaging. When paired withrelatively high-impedance loudspeakers, Onkyoamplifiers have more than enough current capabilityto drive them with ease. In the case of the A-9377,you will find a capable power transformer and twoaudiophile-grade capacitors (each with a capacitanceof 8,200 µF). The transformer and capacitors worktogether to supply ample amounts of current to the speakers.

Optimum Gain Volume Control Circuitryto Preserve Signal PurityConventional volume-attenuation methods involveinitially dropping a signal close to the noise floor atlow volumes. The signal may then be tainted withnoise, which subsequently gets amplified along withthe signal. Onkyo’s Optimum Gain Volume ControlCircuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half thetypical amount of attenuation is necessary. The signal never comes close to the noise floor, thusaverting the possibility of the noise found inconventional designs.

Quality Construction for Quality AudioA vital factor in any audio component is its buildquality. It’s not just about good looks. The buildquality of the chassis, the construction techniquesused, the electronic parts chosen—all combine toshape the outputted audio signal. The A-9377’s high-rigidity, anti-resonant chassis is designed to isolatethe audio signal from any vibrations that may inflictinterference during the amplification process. Thischassis is superbly finished with an aluminum frontpanel and volume control that accentuate thequality of the construction throughout.
