WINE IN GREECE

Wine has been an important part of Greek culture for over

4000 years as the numerous archaeological discoveries

throughout Greece indicate. The ancient Greeks knew well

the nutritional value of wine as it became an inseparable

part of their daily regimen.

Greek wine industry consists of a large number of firms,

different in size and contribution to the sector.

The EU recognizes two quality marks for Protected

Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Designation of

Indication (PGI).

Wine tourism in Northern Greece

• Wine tourism in Northern Greece is clearly much more organized and that is due to the Wines of North Greece organization, which has designed the Wine Roads of Northern Greece.

• In Greece, the first organized wine roads were outlined in 1997 by the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard and given the official name “Wine Roads of Northern Greece.”

Wine tourism in Central Greece

The vineyards of Central Greece, with extensive holdings in the grape-growing areas of Thessalia and Continental Greece, account for 32% of the Greek vineyards and 29% of winemaking facilities, many of which include infrastructure suitable for hosting visitors.

The Association of Winemakers of the Central Greece Vineyards (ENOAKE) is the organization that plans and maintains the wine roads of Central Greece and also participation in the "Open Doors" programme featuring periodical exhibitions, tastings and printed material to facilitate wine tourism in Central Greece.

Wine tourism in Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean.

It is at the southern-most point of Europe and at the crossroads of three

continents. Crete one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.

Wine production in Crete has a very long history and the vineyards of the

islands are historic. For Cretans, participation in wine-making activities and the

staging of related festivals is a tradition. Therefore, the possibility for wine

tourism in Crete has always existed.

In recent years, however, the wineries with facilities suitable for touring have

multiplied and since 2007, the Heraklion Winemakers Network (DONH) in

Eastern Crete and the Chania-Rethymno Winemakers Network in Western

Crete have become active
