THE WALL-PAINTINGS OF THE MONASTERY OF SAINT NICHOLAS OF THE PHILANTHROPINOI, PREEMINENT MONUMENT IN EPIRUS
In 1291/92 Michael Philanthropinos, priest and oikonomos of the Metropolis of Ioannina, and in his later years candidate for the metropolitan throne (+1341/42), renovated, as noted in the relevant inscription, the church of Saint Nicholas, katholikon of the monastery founded by the Philanthropinos family on the island in the lake (Nissi). In the sixteenth century, the monasterys heyday, painters of the local, so-called Epirote School decorated the church with wall-paintings. The decoration, which followed successive building works, took almost thirty years to complete, interrupted by long intervals. It was executed in three phases, possibly in 1531/32, and in 1542 and 1560 as attested by inscriptions, under the guidance of abbots of the monastery, luminaries of the Philantropinos family. The first painting phase, probably under the hieromonk Neophytos Philanthropinos (+1531/32), produced a masterpiece, the first known decoration of the Epirote School. The other two phases, in the time of the hieromonk Ioasaph Philanthropinos (+1568), gave inspired works in compass and content.
The painting ensemble is for the most part preserved in intact. Of high quality, it has unity, pulse and the sweet word of a recountment rich and replete in meanings. The narrative structure, the extent and complexity of the iconographic cycles that encompass events past and to come in the uniform time of the Church, constitute a precious chapter for knowledge of post-byzantine art as a whole. One of the most important works of its splendid period, it is above all an outstading monument of spiritual and aesthetic culture in the land. A brief approach to it, descriptive in character, offers but little to its evaluation.

THE CIRCLE OF THE PARABLES OF CHRIST IN THE WEST NARTHEX OF THEMONASTERY OF PHILANTROPENOI.AN INTERPRETATIVE APPROACH
In the west narthex of the monastery of Philantropenoi the upper painted zone is covered by Christs parable scanes. From the total of forty parables - where the allegorical narrations are included - we have in this monument a selection of ten. The criterion of the artist seems to be on the one hand the monument itself and on the other the projection of the benevolence of God. The ten parables starting from the north wall are the following: The House built on sand, The Tax-gatherer and the Pharisee and the Prodigal son. In the west wall we have the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Maidens) and of the Vine- growers. The parables continue on the south wall with the Good Sower, the Richman and the poor Lazarus and in the east wall with the Foolish richman, the Bad Workers of the Vineyard and the Royal Wedding.
In this paper we give a detailed description of the scenes, which are kept close to the Holy Scriptures, and then we investigate two main subjects: We first try to identify the sources and patterns used by the artist(s) and secondly we attempt to discover the artistic party that worked in the west narthex of the monastery of Philantropenoi. Thus by examining the wider area of Epiros and taking into consideration all the suggestions made so far by students of the sixteenth-century monuments we come to the conclusion that the west narthex of Philantropenoi may well gave been painted circa 1560 by the brothers Frangos and George Kondaris, who had been the pupils of the great painter Frangos Katelanos from Thebes.
Concerning the models of these parables one has to examine earlier depictions of these scenes in illuminated manuscripts but also contemporary ones in sixteenth-century monuments in the whole Balkan peninsula, and look through the anthibola or sketch-books used by artists after the fall of Constantinople and during the Tourkokratia. But this would have requested another and longer study.

LA RAPPRESENTAZIONE DI SAN GIOVANNI "DIIOANNINA"AL MONASTERO DEI FILANTHROPINON E L EVOLUZIONE
DELLA SUAICONOGRAFIA
San Giovanni si rappresenta sulla parete occidentale del esonartece (lite) del katho- likon del monastero dei Filanthropinon sul isola di Ioannina. il primo conosciuto epirota neomartire. Si condanne alia morte e si sacrifice a Constantinopoli il 18 Aprile del 1526. II suo martirio fu conosciuto molto presto e la sua rappresentazione si e inclusa ai program- mi iconografici delle chiese di Epiro e raramente alle chiese di altre regioni (Macedonia, Thessaglia, Peloponneso). La rappresentazione del santo ai monastero dei Filanthropindn fa parte delle pitture databili al 1542. La seconda conosciuta rappresentazione si trova al katholikdn del monastero di Barlaam a Meteora (Thessaglia). Le pitture si datano al 1548 e sono state eseguite da Frangos Katelanos. Al 1568 il santo si rappresenta, da Frangos Kondaris, alia chiesa di Metamorfosi (Transfigurazione) a Veltsista.
Nonostante che gli artisti che hanno eseguito le pitture dei tre monument! sopranno- tati appartenevano alio stesso ambiente culturale ed artistico, ognuno ha formato il suo tipo iconografico. Il tipo iconografico formato dal artista delle pitture del monastero dei Filanthropinon e il prototipo per la rappresentazione del santo ai programmi iconografici nel 18o e 19o secolo. Il tipo iconografico del monastero di Barlaam e unico e non si ripete. Infine, il tipo iconografico di Metamorfosi a Veltsista si ripete durante il 17o e 18o secolo.

RAPPORTS ETROITS - ICONOGRAPHIQUES ET STYLISTIQUES - AVECDES COURANTS PLUS LARGES DE LA PEINTURE EUROPEENNE DONT
TEMOIGNENT LES PEINTURES DU NARTHEX INTERIEUR ( L ITI), SURTOUT, DU MONASTERE DES PHILANTHROPINON. 1560.
La decoration de la liti et des exonarthex du Monastere des Philanthropinon date, pour sa plus grande partie, de 1560. Dans ces ensembles congus plutot de fagon monotone et schematique, on observe un grand nombre de compositions, parmi les scenes de Martyres surtout, qui introduisent des enseignements vecus et des pratiques picturales vivantes de la Renaissance. Des elements signalant une mode dexotisme apparaissent aussi dans cette peinture, comme dans celle de 1542.
L anatomie des corps humains, les elements du paysage, les effets pour rendre la troisieme dimension dans lespace pictural, se combinent avec une observation directe et realiste de pratiques de tortures barbares, etudiees de tres pres et fidelement rendues.
Cette nouvelle orientation, cette ouverture vers dautres sources dinspiration que la peinture de tradition byzantine navait pas connues jusqualors, est Pelement le plus frap- pant dans la peinture des Philanthropinon de 1542 et de 1560.
Des formes dun nouvel exotisme, ainsi que des caracteristiques typiquement espagnoles sont localisees surtout dans la d6coration de la liti. Elies proviennent dun courant particulier et bien circonscrit de Part de la Renaissance. Elies font apparaitre des contacts reels et des ouvertures tant sur le monde de lAsie bouddhiste ou hindouiste - vu plutot a travers Part de PIslam - que sur les cultures du monde des Ameriques, recemment conquises par les Espagnols et autres Europeens.
Ce qui frappe plus particulierement, cest Pintroduction delements typiquement espagnols, elements secondaires dans Part de la Renaissance, mais qui - dans le cas precis des Philanthropinon de 1542 et de 1560 - nous permettent de deceler des contacts inedits, directs ou indirects, quon navait pas observes jusquici dans P art du XVIe siecle de tradition byzantine. Ils sintegrent ici dans un ensemble de tradition byzantine, enrichi des enseignements du "realisme" a la maniere de la Renaissance.

LES RAPPORTS DES PEINTURES MURALES DES MONASTERES DES PHILANTHROPINON ET DE DILIOU AVEC U ATELIER
DE KASTORIA DE LA FIN DU XVe S.
Les peintures murales des monasteres de Saint-Nicolas-des-Philantropinon et de Saint- Nicolas-Diliou sur lie du lac de Jannina, datees au XVIes. presentent des affinites remar- quables avec les peintures murales executees par les artistes de Tatelier dit de Kastoria. II s agit d un atelier de peintres anonymes itinerants qui a travaille pendant la demiere vingtaine du XVe s. en Grece du Nord et aux zones centrales balcaniques.
Ces artistes, tout en continuant la peinture paleologue, ont cherche de la renouveler en s inspirant surtout de la peinture occidentale et de la vie reelle. Leur peinture est assez savante, caracterisee par des tendances realistes remarquables. Leurs oeuvres les plus con- nues sont: le Vieux Catholicon du Grand - Meteoron (1483). CuCer (peintures de 1483/4), Saint Nicolas-de-la nonne-Eupraxia a Kastoria (1485 / 6), Trescavac (peintures datees vers 1490), Saint-Nicolas-Magaliou a Kastoria (1490 - 1500), Kremicovci (narthex - 1493 - 1503) et Poganovo (1499 - 1500).
L art de cet atelier a exerce une influence considerable sur des peintures contempo- raines et plus tardives en Grece et en Moldavie. Palm elles, il a influence le courant aristique important connu comme lEcole de la Grece du Nord-Ouest, a laquelle appartiennent les peintures des monasteres des Philantropinon et de Diliou. Plus precisement, en ce qui con- cerne le monastere des Philanthropinon, decore de trois campagnes de peinture, de 1531/2, de 1542 et de 1560, de style pared entre elles, on remarque beacoup d affinites icono- graphiques remarquables entre 1 atelier sus-mentionne et les deux premieres periodes. Au point de vue de style, on voit surtout le meme amour vers un realisme prononce s inspirant de P art occidental et de la vie reele, mais on remarque peu d affinites tres precises.
Beaucoup de points communs existent entre les peintures du monastere du Dilou (1543) et P atelier en question, surtout en ce qui concerne iconographie.
En somme, les peintres qui ont decore les monasteres sus - mentionnes du lac de Jannina semblent avoir assimile le courant artistique local de la fin du XVes. qui constitue une de composantes de leur art.
