PARTICIPATION OF THE MUNICIPALITYOF MYKONOS AND ITS CITIZENSELECTIONS 2014 - MUNICIPALITY OF MYKONOS

E ff ective recycling means that the environment, the Munici-

pality and the citizen stand to gain. Over the past years, the scandalous mismanagement of the rubbish by the Municipality of Mykonos, and its disastrous eff ects on the environ-ment, on our health, and on Tour-ism has forced KEPOM to make this issue TOP PRIORITY.

While researching the topic, we learnt that recycling, not only helps the environment, but that it is an extremely lucrative business.

That is how MoikONOS, a non profi t recycling cooperative was set up, by a number of disgruntled citizens, who were totally disappointed by the indiff erence of the Local Authorities,

the non existence of recycling, the problematic collection of rubbish, and decided to take positive ac-tion. The initiative was taken by like minded citizens of the island, many of whom were active members of KEPOM.

MoikoNOS opened its doors in July 2013, using the Recycling at Source System. With the help of the general public, members and volunteers 170 tons of refuse less have gone into the landfi ll!

In Mykonos, more and more citizens are aware of this eff ort, and sup-port it in every way possible, which cannot be said for the current Town Council! Since the fi rst day of its op-eration, MoikoNOS was looked upon with suspicion, by the Municipality of Mykonos, who adamantly ignored the proposal of collaboration, which has been sent on three diff erent occasions since October 2013, ask-ing for the matter to be put on the agenda for discussion by the Town Council, with a view to collaboration, where the Municipality would not only carry out eff ective recycling, but would also avail of the substantial profi t, which would ensue.

Effective recycling means that the environment,the Municipality and the citizen stand to gain.

In contrast, with peculiar transac-tions going on, both within and also outside the Town Council, it would appear that they are eager to col-laborate with a private individual,as they consider the refuse manage-ment merely a problem, which must

be gotten rid of. It is in the interest of Mykonos that the Municipality itself manage its refuse and avail of the benefi ts and the profi t.

We are of the opinion that the only solution is for the Municipality to adopt the collective recycling system which is proposed by MoikoNOS!

✔ Carry out a study on the practical administration of a total recycling op-eration, using the Recycling at Source system of recycling.

✔ Carry out a study on the current situation of the landfi ll, and based on the fi ndings, present the most appropriate course of action for the future.

✔ Extend the recycling programme to include all the categories of materials that can be recycled.

✔ Composting so that the least possible amount of waste is transported to the landfi ll, so that it will fi ll up more slowly.

✔ From the income earned from recycling, the municipality could purchase the appropriate equipment to recycle glass and even branches of trees.

Born in Mykonos in 1966,and is the daughter of Theodore

and Evangelia Kammis. She is a graduate of Political Science from Panteio University. Since 2012 she has been doing an e-learning course in Organisation and Administration of Tourist Enterprises. She has been responsible for the Tourist Department in Delia Travel since 1985. She is married to Garifallos Garifallou and is the mother of three children.Since she was a pupil, she was an active member of both Parent and Student Associations, at all levels of Education. She was also an active member of the Cultural Associations and Citizen Movements. She was also a member of the Cultural and

Educational Association of Mykonos. She participated in The Active Citizens Movement of Mykonos in 1995 and since 1990 has been a member of the Cultural and Folklore Association of Women, of which she was President from 2007 to 2012. She was one of the founding members of the MoikONOS Recycling Cooperative. In the elections of 2010 she participated as a candidate for KEPOM and has been a Town Councillor since 2012 in the Municipality of Mykonos. She is also the Secretary of the Town Council, while being a member of the Primary School Committee, and the Tourism Committee of the Municipalityof Mykonos.With her participation in the local elections, she will do her utmost, and in whatever position she holds, to ensure that the Town Council operates in a democratic manner, at all levels, and she will make sure that the doors of the Town Hall will be open to every citizen, and will put the affairs of the Town Hall in order, and make whatever changes necessary to ensure that the administration of the Town Hall operates effeciently.
